Color slides from an exhibition held at the University of Wisconsin of the objects made during the WPA-FAP Milwaukee Handicraft Project, 1935-1943, as well as slides of the exhibition space.
Biographical / Historical:
The WPA + 35 Exhibition, January 4-30, 1970, presented by the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee was a tribute to the crafts and quality of design which came of the Milwaukee Handicraft Project. The Project began in the Fall of 1935. It was one of the more unusual and diverse of the handicraft projects in its philosophy and its goals. Its "Project 1170" was a specially created project for women who needed work, interested in becoming self-supporting. Milwaukee County and the Milwaukee State Teachers College were sponsors of the project.

Donated 1971 by the Department of Art, School of Fine Arts, University of Wisconsin.

A collection of portfolios containing 59 block-printed textiles done for the handicraft project.
Also included on microfilm reel 3482 is one decorative, block-printed portfolio, approximately 11" x 13.5" with a seal "W.P.A. Handicraft Project No. 1170".
Biographical / Historical:
Howard Thomas was the director of the Milwaukee WPA Handicraft Project. The Milwaukee WPA Handicraft Project was one of the more unusual and diverse of the handicraft projects. Its "Project 1170" was a program especially created for women interested in becoming self-supporting. The Milwaukee County and the Milwaukee State Teachers College were partial sponsors of the project.

Unmicrofilmed material donated 1964 by Howard Thomas; material on reel 3482 donated 1966 by Harold Wescott.

Organizational records including those of the Wisconsin Artists Federation and the Society of Applied Arts, the two predecessors of the Wisconsin Designer Craftsmen. Records contain correspondence; constitutions; minutes of regular meetings and of council and committee meetings; financial records; membership lists; biographical data sheets on members; exhibitors' lists; lists of awards; bulletins; newsletters; a scrapbook; five calendars which include the work of Wisconsin craftsmen; and some material on related organizations such as the American Crafts Council and Midwest Designer-Craftsmen.
Biographical / Historical:
Arts and crafts society; Milwaukee, Wisc. Founded as the Wisconsin Society of Applied Arts (1916-1936) then becoming the Wisconsin Artists Federation (1936). Its purpose is "to promote fellowship among the workers, and to raise the standards of beauty in objects of common use, to bring designer and worker into mutual relationship..."
