CDR copy Tape Info: The following tapes were recorded at the 1962 University of California - Berkeley Folk Festival. FW-ASCH-7RR-2513 is Reel 3 of a "cabaret" session which took place on 6/30/1962. It begins with an unidentified banjo player singing two songs associated with country singer Grandpa Jones. Following singers include Scottish singer Jean Redpath and Virginia folksinger Andrew Rowan Summers, accompanying himself on the dulcimer. (For reel number 5 of the same cabaret session, see FW-ASCH-7RR-4033. Other available tapes contain a cabaret session recorded on 6/29/1962.)

CDR copy FW-ASCH-7RR-2514 is reel 1 of Workshop I, on the subject of singing styles, recorded 6/27/1962. Before they discuss styles in depth, each singer sings one song (or one plus fragments). Reel 1 doesn't get beyond the singing portion of the workshop, although some of the singers comment briefly on style before singing. Singers include Bessie Jones, Roscoe Holcomb, Jean Ritchie, Jean Redpath, Slim Critchlow, Andrew Rowan Summers and The New Lost City Ramblers. Sam Hinton is the moderator. Dr. Charles Seeger is present at the workshop, but doesn't speak on this reel. This reel was not well-recorded.

Following a song sung by moderator Sam Hinton, a serious discussion ensues about singing styles. On this CD, containing only the beginning of the tape, only the Sam Hinton song is included. FW-ASCH-7RR-2496 through -2519 and FW-ASCH-7RR-4032 through -4058, among others, were all recorded at the same 1962 Berkeley Folk Festival.

The tape is physically short, suggesting that perhaps some of the tape, containing the final three songs, was removed.

CDR copy FW-ASCH-7RR-2519 is a continuation of the "Jubilee Concert" recorded on 7/1/1962, (see FW-ASCH-7RR-2517 above for beginning of Concert) presenting Roscoe Holcomb (Appalachian singer, banjo player and guitarist) and Andrew Rowan Summers (Appalachian singer and dulcimer player). Sam Hinton is general moderator. But during the R. Holcomb segment, John Cohen, discoverer of Roscoe Holcomb, also functions as moderator. FW-ASCH-7RR-2496 through -2519 and FW-ASCH-7RR-4032 through -4058, among others, were all recorded at the same 1962 Berkeley Folk Festival.
