This set contains approximately 1456 photographs (319 lantern slides, 683 negatives, 405 photographic prints) that were shot by Dr. Leuman Waugh in Alaska circa 1929-1938. Waugh photographed people from many Indigenous Alaskan communities including Unangan (Aleut), Inupiaq (Alaskan Inupiat Eskimo), Yup'ik [Norton Sound], Bering Strait Inupiaq [King Island], Alaskan Eskimo, Yuit (Siberian Yup'ik) [St. Lawrence Island], Bering Strait Inupiaq [Diomedes], Inupiaq (Alaskan Inupiat Eskimo) [Kikiktagrukmiut/Kikiktagruk/Kotzebue], Inupiaq (Alaskan Inupiat Eskimo) [Tikeramiut/Tikeraq (Tigara)/Point Hope], and Nunivagmiut Cup'ik [Nunivak Island].
The photographs depict portraits; landscapes and waterscapes; wildlife such as birds, dogs, and polar bears; flora such as wildflowers; transportation via ships, boats, kayaks, and animal-pulled sleds; buildings such as houses, churches, and harbor facilities; Waugh performing dental work on indigenous patients; vaccinations in indigenous communities; and whale and walrus hunting, among other scenes of daily life. The photographs documenting medical procedures are restricted.
Among the sites in Alaska that Waugh visited and photographed were Aleutian Islands, Bering Sea Islands, Hooper Bay, Kotzebue, Nome, Point Barrow, Point Hope, and Wainwright.
Access to some photographs are restricted. Some dental records may be restricted from access, reproduction, or publication under personal health information privacy provisions of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996.
