Scope and Contents:
The John Canfield Ewers Papers document his wide ranging anthropological interests from early White depictions of Native Americans to the material culture of the Plains tribes through correspondence, exhibit catalogs, field notes, illustrations, lectures, maps, photocopies of archival materials, photographs, and writings. The collection includes materials relating to his numerous research projects and publications such as his books on plains sculpture and Jean Louis Berlandier as well as his field research among the Assiniboin and Blackfoot tribes. Ewers' career as an ethnologist based in a museum is amply documented through correspondence, exhibit plans and scripts, notes, and reports showcasing his work for the National Park Service and his fifty plus years at the Smithsonian. The voluminous correspondence file highlights his close collaboration with individuals such as Stu Conner, Hugh Dempsey, Claude Schaeffer, and Colin Taylor. Ewers' graduate studies and his family are featured in Series XI. One special category of materials in this collection is Series XIV, the card files. Ewers pulled information from his field notes and other sources, classified them, and typed or wrote them up on 3x5 or 5x7 inch index cards. He then organized these files alphabetically by subject within large categories such as "Collecting Alpha by Collectors Name" or "Fur Trade and Trade Goods." The card files include correspondence and photographs and closely relate to materials throughout the rest of the collection. Though Ewers' papers are primarily textual in nature, there are graphic materials throughout his files. Series XIII features the graphic materials that Ewers kept separate from his files such as the contents of his slide cabinets. There is overlap within this series as Ewers kept multiple copies of his slides in various locations. This series also includes audiotapes of conferences and symposia at which Ewers spoke and three scrapbooks. Of note are original pencil and ink drawings from his book, The Horse in Blackfoot Culture, in Series XV. Transcripts of oral history interviews with John Canfield Ewers are also available at the Smithsonian Institution Archives.

Biographical/Historical note:
John Canfield Ewers (1909-1997) earned a B.A. from Dartmouth College in 1931 and an M.A. in Anthropology from Yale University in 1934. Ewers began his career in museums as a Field Curator for the National Park Service. He helped design exhibits at Vicksburg National Battlefield and Ocmulgee National Monument among others. In 1941, the Bureau of Indian Affairs hired Ewers to design and establish the Museum of the Plains Indian in Browning, Montana. After a short stint in the Navy during World War II, Ewers joined the Department of Anthropology at the Smithsonian Institution. He worked at the Smithsonian for over fifty years in numerous capacities including Director of the National Museum of History and Technology (now called the National Museum of American History). Ewers' research dealt with the Plains Indians and the Blackfoot tribe in particular. Ewers wrote several books on a wide variety of topics including White artists depictions of Native Americans, Plains Indian sculpture, and the horse in Blackfoot Indian culture.

The papers of sculptor, painter, and dancer Judith Brown measure 3.3 linear feet and date from circa 1940 to 2002. The papers document Brown's career through personal and professional files such as resumes and biographical writings, awards, scant personal business records, a video recording about Brown, and some papers related to professional organizations, commissions, and exhibitions. Printed material includes announcements, posters, and catalogs related to group and solo exhibitions, holiday sales of Brown's artwork, studio open houses, and dedication ceremonies; publicity material; reproductions of her artwork; articles and newspaper clippings; and more. The photographs include snapshots, prints, slides, transparencies, and negatives of Brown's artwork, the artist working in her New York City and Vermont studios, exhibitions, installations, and some images with family and friends. Artwork consists of paintings, sketchbooks, project designs, homemade holiday cards, and other works of art made by Brown between the late 1930s to late 1980s.
Arrangement:
The collection is arranged as four series.

Series 1: Personal and Professional Papers, circa 1940-1992 (Box 1; .2 linear feet)

Biographical / Historical:
Judith Brown (1931-1992) was a sculptor, painter, and dancer in New York, New York, and Brownsville, Vermont. She attended Sarah Lawrence College and studied with Theodore Roszak, 1952-1954. Always fascinated with motion, Brown was noted for successfully capturing fleeting moments of a body's action through sculpture and paintings, with particular interest in how fabric draped and flowed along the body's contours during movement. Brown established herself by the late 1950s, and from then on had a long career of exhibiting and selling her work.

Brown's work was exhibited widely throughout the United States and Europe, featured in group shows at the Museum of Contemporary Crafts, the Boston Arts Festival, The New Britain Museum of American Art, and many other galleries and museums. Brown's one-person exhibitions include shows at Zygos Gallery in Cyprus and Galeriea de Antonio Souza in Mexico City, as well as galleries and museums in Vermont, Florida, and New York City. Brown's artwork was also displayed in windows at Tiffany's and Bonwit Teller in their New York City department stores.

In addition to displaying her work in exhibition settings, Brown received many public and private commissions throughout her career. Her public commissions may be found in many U.S. states including New York, Vermont, New Jersey, Virginia, Georgia, and California; and she has work currently housed with several museums and corporations including the Pepsi Company, Marriott Corporation, Dartmouth College, Vermont Law School, Jewish Museum, and the Museum of Dance.

During her career, Brown was a trustee and member of the Vermont Council on the Arts, member of Artists Equity Association, Creative Arts Rehabilitation, and Women in the Arts Foundation, Inc. She received honorable mention in the Gold Medal Competition at the Architectural League of New York City in 1958, an award from the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation in 1970, and an award in creative art from the American Academy and the National Institute of Arts and Letters in 1976.
Provenance:
The bulk of the collection was donated by Judith Brown in 1978. Additional materials were donated in 1995 and 2007 by Brown via Peter Stettenheim, Brown's brother and the executor of her will.

Correspondence consists of letters, telegrams, faxes, postcards, and greeting cards. Included are letters of a personal nature between Simon and his artist friends and colleagues; correspondents discuss family matters, daily activities, and work projects. There are copies of Simon's outgoing letters and drafts of writings. Included are single letters from Fritz Bultman (1 postcard), Jacqueline Helion, Penelope Jencks, William King, Burgess Meredith, and Judith Shahn.

General correspondence, for the most part is with galleries, museums, public and religious institutions relating to scheduling of exhibitions, commissioned projects, and sales of artwork. Other letters document Simon's active involvement in a number of professional organizations, such as the Architectural League of New York, Century Association, the National Academy of Design, the New York Chapter of Artists Equity Association, and the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. Found are records of Simon's teaching positions at Amherst College, the Hopkins Center, Dartmouth College, and the New School. Among the correspondents are Castle Hill, Truro Center for the Arts, Colby College, André Emmerich, Eric Makler Gallery, Xavier Gonzalez, Graham Gallery, Ruth Millerick, Museum of Modern Art, Anne Poor, and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. There are single letters from Sigmund Abeles, Benny Andrews, Varujan Boghosian, Helen Frankenthaler (1 postcard), Bernard Gotfryd, Walker Hancock, Milton Hebald, William King, Burgess Meredith, Paul Resika, Hughie Lee-Smith, among others. Found are illustrated letters by Simon and others, including a handmade Christmas card from William Zorach.

Printed material contains announcements, invitations, solo and group exhibition catalogs, and clippings pertaining to Getz's artistic career. Also included are posters for exhibitions in which Getz participated with a monograph of the Artist's Christmas Cards which features a reproduction of Getz's work.

Included within the material are an acquisitions report from Dartmouth College Museums & Galleries and an annual report from the Wadsworth Atheneum, which list the gift of Getz's work to the institutions. Also found are group exhibition catalogs including Collage International: From Picasso to the Present, Contemporary Arts Museum, 1958; Cinquante Ans de "Collages" Musée d'Art et d'Industrie, 1964; and Grandes Femmes Petits Formats, Micro-Salon 1974, inscribed by Iris Clert-Christofle. Solo exhibition catalogs include Ilse Getz, Collage Paintings, Tibor Nagy Gallery, 1962; Ilse Getz, Paintings, Collages, Constructions Neuberger Museum, and Kunsthalle Nürnberg, 1978; and Ilse Getz, Boxes, Collages, & Constructions Alex Rosenberg Gallery and Goethe House, 1978, among others. Magazine and newspaper clippings include reviews of Getz's work by Larry Campbell, Henry Lehmann. Virginia Mann, Vivien Raynor, and Sidney Tillim.
