Background and biographical information consists of Nesbitt's resume, an artist/designer statement, list of clients and accomplishments of Nesbitt Associates, Ltd., press releases, articles, and photographs of the designer.,The materials in this collection document Nesbitt's work from 1951 through 1984.
The records of the office of public relations cover the years 1955-1963 and include press releases and clippings describing some Nesbitt's products, his theories on consumer motivation, and the results of his surveys, as well as correspondence with members of the press. General office correspondence is boxed separately.
Color slides, color and black & white transparencies, and black & white photographs of most of Nesbitt's designs for packaging from 1951-1981 are included. Oversized materials include books jackets and booklets designed by Nesbitt, as well as some renderings for packaging designs done in color.
Three samples of fitted presentation boxes designed by Nesbitt are included, as well as a prototype for a design award for Parsons School of Design in New York, and two "Multiplication" cubes commissioned by the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Biographical / Historical:
Packaging, industrial, and graphic designer. Born in New York City, August 10, 1920. Nesbitt was a student of sculptor Chaim Gross and studied art at many New York institutions including: Art Students League; New York University; Columbia University; Pratt Institute of Art; and the New School.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945 where he worked as a cartographer and as the head of the visual aid section in a military intelligence training center. In 1945, he joined the staff of Harper's Bazaar magazine where he was an illustrator assisting art director Alexey Brodovich. In 1946, Nesbitt was hired by the industrial design studio of Raymond Loewy as a handletterer and packaging designer.
He worked with Lippincott Industrial Design from 1948 to 1951. Nesbitt opened his own design studio, Nesbitt Associates, Ltd. in 1951. The firm specialized in package design, trademarks, and corporate identities. Some of his most recognizable designs were for the label for Campbell's Soup and the Florists' Telegraph Delivery (F.T.D.) Winged Mercury 'Interflora' figure, still used today. Nesbitt's other clients included: Franco American; Revlon; Ballantine Beer; Borden; Champion spark plugs; Kodak; Philip Morris cigarettes; Schick razors; and Archway cookies. In addition, Nesbitt developed the "Karry Kit" for Ballantine Beer which came to be widely used and known as the six pack.
Nesbitt was known for his revealing studies and surveys of the buying needs and preferences of the "average American housewife" and consumers in general. His opinions on what he referred to as "underpackaging" were widely publicized in professional magazines and journals. In 1984, Nesbitt retired from the design field and went to California to resume his career as a sculptor until his death in 1993.

The subseries consists of a property checklist and a lease. The property checklist was to be completed by real estate personnel, and it detailed traffic, distance to business activities, land information, zoning data, and general site information such as water, sewer, natural gas and wiring lines. The lease is an example of what terms were agreed to between the "lessor" and McDonald's System, Inc. The bulk of the sales materials include proposals developed by Wood in five areas: System of Success, Public Relations, Sales Areas, Sales Promotions, and Miscellaneous. The "System of Success Communication Within and Without" is a proposal that addresses the issue of troubleshooting and training personnel. Wood's method is based on check chart comparisons and communication ideas. This proposal contains a McDonald's organizational chart. The second proposal is "Public Relations" and contains Wood's outline for "nostalgic paraphernalia" or a "longing for the good times." The "Sales Area" proposal details the sales success system for certain sales territories in the United States and for how McDonald's can succeed. Sales Promotion defines the objective and a plan for approaching it in very general terms. Lastly, the miscellaneous file holds a drive-in restaurant industry consumer survey conducted by the Consumer Research Section at WCOL radio in Cincinnati, Ohio. This survey also contains three articles from operators of coffee houses and drive-in restaurants discussing the services, food and coffee quality, and associated costs and profits. There are some examples of "tests" given to window men to check their speed and accuracy in calculating the cost of food and in making correct change.
There is one black, plastic vinyl briefcase emblazoned with the McDonald's logo.

The Miscellaneous series includes a variety of materials dated between 1894 and 1983. Consumers' Research contains bulletins produced by this organization between 1948 and 1963. These bulletins with other enclosures or attachments are relevant to the topics discussed in the letters and correspondence between representatives of Sohmer, Consumers' Research, and Consumers Union during the years 1941-1963.
The Correspondence between Harry J. Sohmer, Sr. and F.J. Schlink of Consumers' Research between August 13, 1941 and February 24, 1942 reveals that Baldwin Piano Company illegally used Consumers' Research in their advertising and drew misleading comparisons among pianos. Ironically, the correspondence of May 7 and May 9, 1963 between Robert L. Smith of Consumers Union and Harry J. Sohmer, Sr. reveals the unsubstantiated accusation that Sohmer was using the 1941 Consumers' Research reports to promote sales. Harry Sohmer denied this by insisting he did not possess a copy of this report and closed by asking for one.
The brochures of the Lake Placid Club in New York were probably collected for advertising purposes. The Club was a customer of Sohmer & Co. and the company often included the Club's name in its brocures for the promotion of Sohmer pianos.
The Piano Examinations of 1961 1962 are appraisal reports of pianos of various brand names. The report describes the piano, defines or diagnoses the main problem with it, and indicates a price for repairing it. Information about School Pianos includes letters with construction and sound quality specifications and a handbook entitled "Wood Colors and Kinds."

These records are the official minutes of the Board. They are compiled at the direction of the Secretary of the Smithsonian, who is also secretary to the Board, after
approval by the Regents' Executive Committee and by the Regents themselves. The minutes are edited, not a verbatim account of proceedings. For reasons unknown, there are no
manuscript minutes for the period from 1857 through 1890; and researchers must rely on printed minutes published in the Annual Report of the Smithsonian Institution instead.
Minutes are transferred regularly from the Secretary's Office to the Archives. Minutes less than 15 years old are closed to researchers. Indexes exist for the period from
1907 to 1946 and can be useful.
Historical Note:
The Smithsonian Institution was created by authority of an Act of Congress approved August 10, 1846. The Act entrusted direction of the Smithsonian to a body called
the Establishment, composed of the President; the Vice President; the Chief Justice of the United States; the secretaries of State, War, Navy, Interior, and Agriculture; the
Attorney General; and the Postmaster General. In fact, however, the Establishment last met in 1877, and control of the Smithsonian has always been exercised by its Board of
Regents. The membership of the Regents consists of the Vice President and the Chief Justice of the United States; three members each of the Senate and House of Representatives;
two citizens of the District of Columbia; and seven citizens of the several states, no two from the same state. (Prior to 1970 the category of Citizen Regents not residents
of Washington consisted of four members). By custom the Chief Justice is Chancellor. The office was at first held by the Vice President. However, when Millard Fillmore succeeded
to the presidency on the death of Zachary Taylor in 1851, Chief Justice Roger Brooke Taney was chosen in his stead. The office has always been filled by the Chief Justice
since that time.

Scope and Contents:
The collection documents the work of the Sosa, Bromley and Aguilar and Associates advertising agency of San Antonio, Texas. They created advertising for large corporations such as Western Union, American Airlines, Coca-Cola, Mars, Procter and Gamble, Anheuser-Busch, and Burger King. Additionally, they worked on political campaigns for Republican candidates including George W. Bush and Ronald Reagan. Works created for local institutions such as the San Antonio Symphony and Incarnate Word High School are also represented in the collection. Sosa, Bromley and Aguilar were pioneers in developing advertising strategies to appeal to Latino consumers.
Lionel Sosa (b. 1939) is from San Antonio, Texas and is of Mexican descent. His first venture as an entrepreneur was starting a graphic design studio called Sosart which later developed into an advertising agency. Ernest Bromley (b.1951), of Puerto Rican and Canadian descent, joined the company in 1981 while employed at the University of Texas, San Antonio as a researcher. Bromley's background in acculturation, advertising and consumer research provided a unique perspective for the newly developed Sosa and Associates. Adolfo "Al" Aguilar (b. 1955), also of Mexican descent, studied advertising and marketing at the University of Texas, Austin. Aguilar worked for Coca-Cola's first Hispanic Marketing Department when he began meeting with Sosa and Bromley. Eventually, Aguilar helped bring the Coca-Cola account to Sosa Bromley and Associates. This successful transfer ultimately led to the development of Sosa, Bromley and Aguilar and Associates.

This series is divided into twelve subseries: sales manuals, magneboard, flip chart, salesmen memos, form letters to trade industry, promotional and product literature, promotional memos, price lists, sales studies, sales bulletins, licensing agreements, and sales data.
The Magneboard Shelf Management Planner, 1981, is a self-contained "plan-o-gram" for all Aladdin field salesmen. This planner was used for sales training in proper shelf space and merchandising techniques, and for presentations, especially with "key" accounts. The sales presentation flip chart, 1949, is approximately 14" x 20" and contains concise sales facts and messages about Aladdin products. The chart was designed for use on a table or counter top.
Memos for salesmen, 1966-1971, consist of price lists, promotional materials, jobber inserts, catalog sheets, test manuals, product specific information, and orders billed. The majority of the memos are from George Cole; some are from R.H. Mickelsen and Bill Bannister. Letters to trade industry, 1957-1963, are standard form letters from Aladdin to potential buyers discussing new products, promoting existing products, and announcing prices. Catalog pages and price lists were common attachments. The promotional and product literature, 1949-1992, includes printed product information attached to memos to sales personnel. The memos contain details such as reminders of sales promotions for various Aladdin products, current price lists, and instructions on taking orders, shipments, and national sales meetings. The memos found among the promotional and product literature should be used in conjunction with the salesmen memos.
The sales bulletins, 1968-1969, are interoffice memos aimed at salesmen, regional managers, and representatives for the purpose of communicating procedures, directives, and policies and to act as "ready reference." The bulletins were intended to become a "permanent" file for everyone associated with the sales force. The Licensing Agreements, 1966-1971, includes correspondence, advance programming information, and agreements with various television shows and movies. This subseries is arranged alphabetically. The sales data, 1939-1996, consists of a variety of financial data. The major account totals, 1940-1983, detail account information with department stores like Sears, Gimble's, Jordan-Marsh, and J.C. Penney and super markets, drug stores, catalog houses, variety chains, rack jobbers, automotive chains, and hardware jobbers. The unit shipments and sales data, 1950-1992, provides product categories with product title, unit change, annual forecasts, forecast errors, and shipments. The historical data, 1939-1992, was collected on various products and product lines. The financial data includes net sales figures, percentage changes, some memos to salesmen, consolidated narratives about product lines, strategic planning documents on "breakable and unbreakable" bottles, consumer research, reorganization memos, and reorganization charts for sales and marketing staff.
