Scope and Contents:
The WKAQ subseries includes photographs of performers, reporters, and on-air personalities, the station's construction, studio interiors, and stills from several programs (telenovelas, variety shows, specials, motion picture films, staff at work). The series also features a telenovela script, ratings statistics, studio floor plans, and print advertisements for the station, its programming, and Telemundo.
Biographical / Historical:
WKAQ, a television station located in San Juan, Puerto Rico, is owned and operated by Spanish-language network, Telemundo. In 1954, WKAQ-TV was the first Television station in Puerto Rico. In 1954, Ángel Ramos, creator of El Mundo (The World) and Puerto Rico's first and third-licensed radio station in the world, WKAQ, founded WKAQ-TV, the first television station in Puerto Rico. The station began branding itself as "Telemundo Puerto Rico" in 1987. Since then, WKAQ-TV is recognized as the original "Telemundo" and has become one of network's flagship stations. WKAQ-TV became a superstation in 2005 when NBCUniversal reformatted its entertainment-based cable channel Telemundo Internacional into Telemundo Puerto Rico. The channel aired WKAQ-TV-produced programs such as "Telenoticias". Telemundo Puerto Rico's target audience was Puerto Ricans and other Caribbean communities living in the U.S. mainland. However, the superstation feed was discontinued in early 2008. Later that year, WKAQ-TV, in co-production with the Telemundo network, launched the morning news and lifestyle show Levantate from its San Juan studios. The station also began to air a local teen drama series, which achieved success in the Puerto Rican teen market.

Descriptive Entry:
These records are the official minutes of the Board. They are compiled at the direction of the Secretary of the Smithsonian, who is also secretary to the Board, after approval by the Regents' Executive Committee and by the Regents themselves. The minutes are edited, not a verbatim account of proceedings. For reasons unknown, there are no manuscript minutes for the period from 1857 through 1890; and researchers must rely on printed minutes published in the Annual Report of the Smithsonian Institution instead. Minutes are transferred regularly from the Secretary's Office to the Archives. Minutes less than 15 years old are closed to researchers. Indexes exist for the period from 1907 to 1946 and can be useful.
Historical Note:
The Smithsonian Institution was created by authority of an Act of Congress approved August 10, 1846. The Act entrusted direction of the Smithsonian to a body called the Establishment, composed of the President; the Vice President; the Chief Justice of the United States; the secretaries of State, War, Navy, Interior, and Agriculture; the Attorney General; and the Postmaster General. In fact, however, the Establishment last met in 1877, and control of the Smithsonian has always been exercised by its Board of Regents. The membership of the Regents consists of the Vice President and the Chief Justice of the United States; three members each of the Senate and House of Representatives; two citizens of the District of Columbia; and seven citizens of the several states, no two from the same state. (Prior to 1970 the category of Citizen Regents not residents of Washington consisted of four members). By custom the Chief Justice is Chancellor. The office was at first held by the Vice President. However, when Millard Fillmore succeeded to the presidency on the death of Zachary Taylor in 1851, Chief Justice Roger Brooke Taney was chosen in his stead. The office has always been filled by the Chief Justice since that time.

Ted Levin (presenter); Homayoun Sakhi; Salar Nador; Kepa Junkera; Eneritz Aulestia [Performers] These internationally recognized musicians represent the heritage and varied journeys of the Afghan exile community living in the United States. From Kabul to California, Homayoun Sakhi is admired as the outstanding Afghan rubâb player of his generation. Born in Afghanistan to one of the country's leading musical families, Sakhi moved to Fremont in 2001. He was recorded for three of the GRAMMY-nominated Smithsonian Folkways albums in the Music of Central Asia series.He will be joined by Salar Nader, a disciple of legendary master Ustad Zakir Hussain. Born in Germany, raised in San Francisco, and now based in Los Angeles, Nader is a virtuosic, renowned tabla player.

Homayoun Sakhi is admired as the outstanding Afghan rubâb player of his generation. Born in Afghanistan to one of the country's leading musical families, Sakhi moved to Fremont in 2001. Born in 1981 in Hamburg, Germany, he and his parents were forced to flee their home in Afghanistan during the Soviet-Afghan War. They settled in the San Francisco Bay Area when he was five years old. His artistic collaborations are diverse and include work with Mario and George Reyes of the Gypsy Kings, Steve Smith of Journey, and the Kronos Quartet, as well as scores and compositions for The Kite Runner, The Heat, and The Reluctant Fundamentalis.

The Río Grande/Río Bravo Basin

Introduction:
The 1998 Festival program formed part of a larger, multi-year Río Grande/Río Bravo Basin project that included:

Folklife Field Research Schools held in Texas, New Mexico, and Colorado to train local academic and community scholars and to direct local research for the Folklife Festival and other public programs;

Production of local public programs in collaboration with local organizations to present research carried out in the region (sponsored by Texas Folklife Resources and the Texas Council for the Humanities);

Smithsonian Folklife Festival programs for 1998 and 2000;

Production of a traveling exhibition, educational materials, and a film documentary.

This collaborative training and research approach built upon several years of work with binational institutions, researchers, and community members, some of whom had participated in earlier Smithsonian projects in the U.S.-Mexico borderlands region. The particular challenge was to research, plan, and produce a program on how local cultures contribute to a sustainable river-basin environment. The Smithsonian's approach was to engage scholars, educators, and individuals - whether formally or nonformally trained - who are involved in community cultural work. We sought to understand relationships between culture and environment and to see how contemporary traditions can be relevant to balancing human prosperity with environmental sustainability. Three questions guided the project: 1) What kinds of communities live in the region today? 2) What is their traditional knowledge for managing the environment? 3) Can local culture provide a foundation for sustainable development projects?

These questions led to in-depth explorations of the many meanings of the Río Grande/Río Bravo. The 1998 Festival offered initial answers through a small Festival program that previewed cultural regions, expressive traditions, and issues that were featured in subtantially greater depth at the 2000 Festival program, El Río.

Olivia Cadaval and Cynthia L. Vidaurri were Curators, and Heidi McKinnon was Program Coordinator; Patricia Fernandez de Castro was Research Advisor.

This project was cosponsored by El Consejo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes with support from the U.S.-Mexico Fund for Culture (The Rockefeller Foundation, Fundación Cultural Bancomer, the Fondo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes), SBC Foundation, Texas Folklife Resources, and the Texas Council for the Humanities. Folklife Fieldwork Research Schools were supported by Colorado College, Tierra Wools, the University of New Mexico, University of Texas-Pan American, and a grant from Smithsonian Outreach Funds.

An interview of Paulus Berensohn conducted 2009 March 20-21, by Mark Shapiro, for the Archives of American Art's Nanette L. Laitman Documentation Project for Craft and Decorative Arts in America, at Berensohn's home and studio, in Penland, North Carolina.
Berensohn speaks of growing up in New York City and his family; his brother Lorin Bernsohn, cellist with the New York Philharmonic; his problems with dyslexia as a child and yet his interest in reading and learning; an early interest in dance and the lack of support he received from his family; his admittance into Yale University, from where he quickly removed himself to attend Goddard College in Vermont; after Goddard attending Columbia University, Juilliard, and Bennington College while studying dance; studying under both Martha Graham and Merce Cunningham; his relationship with M.C. Richards; his first teaching job at Pendle Hill in Pennsylvania that lead to teaching at Swarthmore College for four years; his want to become a production potter while living on a farm in rural Pennsylvania where he created an artist commune; working with pinched pots and moving to Penland, North Carolina to teach workshops at the Penland School of Crafts; his book, "Finding Your Way With Clay," which started as a journaling and teaching project while at Penland; his interest in book art via his interest in journaling; the importance of clay as a healing material that connects humanity and the earth and his role as an advocate for clay; his work in and travels to Australia; recent photography projects and his busy and active schedule. Summary:
This collection consists of nineteen cabinet card images depicting individuals from a number of Southern Plains Indian communities in the Oklahoma and Indian Territories between approximately 1888 and 1894.
Scope and Contents:
The Thomas Croft cabinet cards collection consists of nineteen cabinet card images taken between approximately 1888 and 1894 near Arkansas City, Kansas, and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma Territory. The photos depict men, women, and children from a number of Southern Plains Indian communities living in the regions then known as the Oklahoma and Indian Territories. Communities depicted include Oklahoma Cherokee, Niuam (Comanche), Kiowa, Otoe, Chaticks Si Chaticks (Pawnee), Ponca, and Sac and Fox individuals and groups. These cabinet cards consist of studio portraits as well as less formalized photographs shot outside of the studio on Native reservations and at the nearby Chilocco Indian School.
Please note that the language and terminology used in this collection reflects the context and culture of the time of its creation, and may include culturally sensitive information. As an historical document, its contents may be at odds with contemporary views and terminology. The information within this collection does not reflect the views of the Smithsonian Institution, but is available in its original form to facilitate research.

Biographical / Historical:
Thomas Croft was born in 1849 and lived in Illinois before moving further west. In the years soon after his 1885 arrival in Arkansas City, Kansas, Croft joined two already established photographers in the area, William Prettyman and George Cornish. Croft documented daily life in Arkansas City, but also frequently traveled to the then Oklahoma and Indian Territories to capture images of Native Americans living on nearby reservations. He maintained Elite Studio in Arkansas City, Kansas, and later another studio in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma Territory. Croft continued to practice photography into the early years of the twentieth century until his death in 1909. In addition to his numerous photographs of Native Americans, Croft is also known for documenting the 1893 Land Run in Oklahoma, as well as for taking what is considered to be the first photographic image of a tornado, shot in May of 1896 in Oklahoma City.

Thomas Croft's photographic work is extensive and resides in many cultural heritage repositories, including the Kansas City Public Library in Kansas City, Missouri, the Department of Special Collections and University Archives of the University of Tulsa in Oklahoma, and the DeGolyer Library at Southern Methodist University in Texas, among other locations.
