In 1873 Mt. Jezreel was born out of Vermont Avenue Baptist Church by a group of people tired of walking across town to church. 1879 Mt. Jezreel relocated to 7th near L Street, S.E. to a site known as the old "Meat House". In 1882 the Church voted to purchase the lot on the southeast corner of E Street at 5th, S.E. and in 1883 the cornerstone was laid at 5th & E Streets, S.E.
