This series primarily includes diaries, correspondence, journals, manuscripts, and photograph albums relating to exploration, travel, big-game hunting, and safaris in Africa. Of note, materials document the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition and the Prince of Wales's trips to Africa 1928. Also contains items relating to Carl Ethan Akeley (1864-1926), Verney Lovett Cameron (1844-1894), Henry Arthur Dalrymple-White (1917-2006), A. Radclyffe Dugmore (1870-1955), Henry Morton Stanley (1841-1904) and Lady Dorothy Stanley (1855-1926).

Scope and Contents note:
Journals kept by Lincolnshire native Nathaniel Clayton Cockburn, describing his travels and big game hunting adventures primarily in east and southern Africa and India, as well as his trip around the world in 1904-1906 visiting Egypt, India, Burma, Hong Kong, China, Japan, San Francisco, Chicago, New York and other locations. The journals, written in a rather chatty style, describe daily activities and extensive travel details including: accomodations, methods of travel by land and sea, distances covered, social interactions, animals seen and shot, weather, and his personal impressions of countries, governments, political situations, and similar topics. Cockburn includes detailed lists of items that he brought on his trips, as well as information on ships, hotels, native vocabularies, and species of game in various geographic regions.
General note:
Journals are handwritten in ink on lined paper and include pasted and loose inserts of ephemera (including printed maps and government forms completed by hand, for hunting licenses etc.), correspondence, postcards, black and white photographs, sketches, and hand-drawn maps.

This series contains posters and broadsides that primarily promote lectures and addresses on big-game hunting and exploration of Africa. Several were designed by the artist A. Radclyffe Dugmore (1870-1955). Includes an announcement for an address by David Livingstone (1813-1873) in 1853, and a proclamation on game hunting restrictions in the "Cape district", circa 1814-1831.

Scope and Contents note:
The series contains artwork in a variety of formats such as cartoons, oil paintings, watercolors, engravings, and prints. These depict aspects of life, travel, and nature in Africa. Most works of art were created 1829 – 1937. Subject matter includes African wildlife, big-game hunts, historical events, safaris, local tribes, and portraits of notable European and American figures in the history of Africa like David Livingstone (1813-1873). There are several works by Abel Chapman (1851-1929) and A. Radclyffe Dugmore (1870-1955).
