Identification cards and a resume; an eleven page Laning family genealogy; correspondence with Francis V. O'Connor and others, undated and 1925-1983; photographs of family members and ancestors, of Laning, including one of him with his self-portrait taken by Peter A. Juley & Son, ca. 1943, and of his work; writings, including lecture notes, articles on Reginald Marsh and on Thomas Hart Benton, and an account of his experiences as a muralist for the Treasury Section; Laning's sketchbook; a print by Luigi Lucioni; business and financial records, memberships in organizations; awards and certificates; typescript of an interview with Laning; and printed matter.
Biographical / Historical:
Painter and muralist, died in 1981. Born in Petersburg, Ill. Studied at Art Institute of Chicago, the University of Chicago, and the Arts Students League with Max Weber, Boardman Robinson, and John Sloan. Worked extensively on the WPA Federal Art Project and the Treasury Section.
Provenance:
Material donated in 1972 by Edward Laning, and in 1973, 1983 and 1984 by his widow, Mary Fife Laning, through Laning executor Jack Henderson.

Art gallery; New York, N.Y. Founded ca. 1935 by Maynard Walker in New York. A branch opened in Hollywood, California, 1938. Walker was a primary promoter of the Regionalists during the 1930's and 1940's.

Research materials for Schack's books on Albert C. Barnes and Louis Michel Eilshemius, ART AND ARGYROL: THE LIFE AND CAREER OF DR. ALBERT C. BARNES and AND HE SAT AMONG ASHES.
REEL D193: Eilshemius material, including fifteen letters, 1891-1831, primarily thanks from Eilshemius to C. H. Collins, a poet and a critic who favorably reviewed Eilshemius' books of verse, "Mamon" and "'Lady' Vere" in local Hillsboro, Ohio papers; 2 letters, undated and 1936, from Eilshemius to Schack; 13 hotel and restaurant receipts, 1893-1903; a certificate concerning Eilshemius' coat-of-arms; 21 clippings, 1897-1917; 3 tickets, 1903; a place card from the Art Students at Paris' Thanksgiving dinner at Restaurant Lapérouse, 1887; and a map of Arlington, Hudson County, New Jersey, 1900. The place card and the map were not microfilmed. Other Eilshemius material from sources other than Schack appearing on microfilm reel D193 has been cataloged and housed separately.
REEL 2917: Barnes and Eilshemius material. Barnes material includes correspondence with Ira Glackens, Dr. Hermann Hille, George Biddle, Thomas Hart Benton, James A. Michener, and others; notes; manuscript pages; a catalog; printed material; and a photograph. Eilshemius material includes letters to Eilshemius; Schack's correspondence with Katherine S. Dreier, Duncan Phillips, and others; notes; copies of writings on Eilshemius by others; and clippings.

Correspondence, photographs, business and financial records, printed matter, scrapbooks, and exhibition catalogs document Mrs. Liebman's acquisition of modern American art, European painting and decorative arts, her interest in and support of photography, her encouragement of individual artists, the inception and early history of the Museum of Modern Art, and her own painting career.
REEL 4203: Correspondence with Ansel Adams, Oscar Bluemner, Gutson Borglum, Gaston Lachaise, Stanton Macdonald-Wright, John Marin, the Museum of Modern Art, Alfred Stieglitz and An American Place, Paul Strand and Edward Weston, among many others. Among the business records are receipts for works of art purchased by Mrs. Liebman. Photographs show a photography exhibition opening (1935). Printed matter, mainly newspaper clippings and gallery announcements, relates to artists represented in the Liebman Collection, exhibitions which included loans from the Liebman Collection, and events in which Aline Meyer Liebman participated. Four scrapbooks (1936-1947), comprised of printed matter, correspondence, and photographs, relate to Aline Meyer Liebman's career as a painter. Six exhibition catalogs date from 1921 to 1935. Other material concerns Edgar Degas, Artistide Maillol, Pablo Picasso, Diego Rivera, and Gino Severini.
ADDITION (NOT MICROFILMED): Letters, 1906-1978; invoices for paintings purchased, 1929-1931; financial statements; photographs of Liebman's apartment, works in the Liebman Collection, paintings by Aline Meyer Liebman, and exhibition installations; and a catalog of Parke-Bernet's 1955 Liebman sale.
Biographical / Historical:
Aline Meyer Liebman (1879-1966) was a painter, art patron, and collector of modern art from New York, N.Y. Born in Los Angeles, Calif., Aline Meyer Liebman studied at Barnard College, and with Stefan Hirsch and Henry Mosler. She exhibited at Walker Galleries (1936), San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (1937), Bennington College (1937), Portland Museum (1939), and Weyhe Gallery (1943), among others.

Donated 1986 and 1989 by Margaret Liebman Berger, Aline Meyer Liebman's daughter.
