Film film record and edited film, Rivalry Training Among the Pashtoon, from an effort to document the full range of pastoral nomadic activities of the Pashtoon (Pakhtun) nomads of northeastern Afghanistan. The project was a joint effort of the Smithsonian Institution's National Anthropological Film Center and the National Film Board of Canada.

Full film record of the Pashtoon (Pakhtun) nomads of northeastern Afghanistan was a joint effort of the Smithsonian Institution's National Anthropological Film Center and the National Film Board of Canada. Footage documents the full range of pastoral nomadic activities beginning in the Pashtoon spring camp in the steppe near the provincial center of Baghlan through the Khawak Pass and to the summer mountain pastures in Hindu Kush. Spring-summer scenes include setting-up and breaking camp, river crossings, a village bazaar, butchering lambs, and the caravan crossing the Khawak Pass. Scenes from the winter filming include Nahrin bazaar and preparations for and the playing of the central Asian sport of buzkashi. The film SONS OF HAJI OMAR was produced from this project.

Scope and Contents:
Edited film produced from [Pashtoon Nomad Research Film Project, 1975-1976] created for a lecture by anthropologist Asen Balikci to illustrate institutionalized patterns of rivalry among the Pashtoon. Specific emphasis is placed on the public norms governing the expression of rivalry and the use, by adult males, of dog fights and child fights to dramatize their own social rivalries.

Scope and Contents:
Edited film produced by the National Film Board of Canada from the joint Film Board and Smithsonian Institution filming expedition which documented life among the Pashtoon (Pakhtun) nomads of northeastern Afghanistan. The narrative centers on Haji Omar, the patriarch of a wealthy settled nomad family living near the market town of Nahrin with focus on pastoral activities during the annual migration from the steepe near Baghlan to mountain pastures in Hindu Kush and family conflicts related to economic diversification of Haji Omar's sons. Included are scenes of life in the bazaar, dealings with government officials, and local rivalries as expressed through the central Asian sport of buzkashi.
