Grosvenor speaks of his early life and education in Newport, R.I.; studying in Europe; his first formal art instruction in Dijon, France; the art and architecture scene in Paris; his U.S. Army service; meeting Mark di Suvero, and his influence; his one-man show at the Dwan Gallery; materials; and the impermanence of his pieces. He recalls Richard Bellamy, Virginia Dwan, and William Congdon.

Scope and Contents:
Journals and diaries, correspondence, exhibition catalogs, photographs (1871-1898), and sketches and etchings by Tyler and her husband, Orno James Tyler, document her Chicago work and her days as an art student in Paris.
Reels 4182-4183 (frames 1-470): Writings include an 11-page journal (1886-1892), a 23-page journal, a 1900 diary, and Tyler's "Thought Book" (1875). Correspondence (1883-1893) with family and friends, including letters illustrated by Tyler and transcripts of letters, chronicling her experiences as an art student in Europe (1887-1889) and comments on French society and the role of women in art. Two exhibition catalogs (1891, 1894) are from the Butler Gallery, Hull House. Photographs show Tyler (1894-1898), her studio, Arthur B. Davies (1884), the homes of Tyler (1895), John Leonard Kellogg (1871) and her sister, Mabel Kellogg Rich, Tyler's mural in the Illinois State Building at the Chicago World's Fair (1893), and works of art. Thirty-nine color slides of works of art have not been microfilmed.
Reel 4183 (frames 471-952): Art works consist of 138 sketches and notes, 2 sketchbooks and 7 etchings by Tyler and 2 sketchbooks by her husband, Orno James Tyler. The 2 books are SINGING VERSES FOR CHILDREN (1897) and THE EXCELLENT BECOMES THE PERMANENT (1932).
Biographical / Historical:
Alice Kellogg studied at the Academy of Fine Arts (later the Art Institute of Chicago) and in Paris at the Academie Julian and Colarossi in 1887-1889. She won distinction for her painting in the Paris Salon, the Paris Universal Exposition of 1889, and in Chicago's World's Columbian Exposition in 1893.

The donor and lender, JoAnne Wiemers Bowie, is the great-grandniece of Tyler.

Eilshemius's journal and essays, and McCarthy's sketchbooks and a scrapbook, collected by Sterling Strauser.
REEL 4398: Eilshemius's 125-page journal (1882-1884) discusses classes, student life, and sketching at Cornell University and an 1884 stay in New York City, including his studies at the Art Students League. Sixteen two- to five-page manuscripts (n.d. and 1934), titled "Experiences of Louis Eilshemius" and numbered from 2 to 18, discuss his studies at the Art Students League in New York City and the Academie Julian in Paris, technical matters, and other memories. A 1932 pamphlet by Eilshemius concerns "Some New Discoveries in Science and Art."
REEL 4408: Eight manila folders, each with 2 pages of poems concerning food and eating glued inside, were designed for lunch wagons and diners. One of the three sketchbooks contains drawings of Bethlehem Steel workers, some identified by name and shift number. A notebook (1920-1921) includes crayon and ink, watercolor, and pencil sketches; cartoons; and clippings of women. Seven pages of cartoons are attached to a manila folder. A scrapbook, labeled "made in Ritterville State Hospital, 1920," is filled with clippings of actresses, models, society women, and women athletes, some of whom are identified. Several clippings have been colored over with colored pencil.

Provenance:
Microfilmed in 1990 as part of AAA's Philadelphia Arts Documentation Project. Strauser purchased the Eilshemius materials from New York artist Esther Pressoir, who received the materials from Eilshemius. Strauser received the McCarthy materials directly from Justin McCarthy.

Notes and charts concerning the Spier and Cameron families, 1928-1938; letters, 1868-1947, include a few childhood notes, letters to his parents describing his courses, instructors; to classmates while at the Art Students League in New York, while studying art in Paris, and to his wife, Marie, in Chicago; and letters to Cameron from colleagues.
Among the business records are an application for letters patent, with colleague Mark Salomon, for a device used in the transformation of theater scenery, 1905, and copyright cards for paintings, 1911-1917; notes; a notebook, 1936; 38 cards, 1917-1920, containing information about art works; an undated draft and a typescript, 1940, for an autobiographical acccount "The Cusp of Gemini".
Art works by Cameron include a sketchbook, 1882-1883, primarily of costumed figures, 10 unbound sketches, 21 oil sketches, undated and 1899, some of which are studies for murals, an etching, and 2 copies of a lithograph portrait of a woman. Works by others include a pencil portrait, 1918, of Cameron by Fitzpatrick, and an ink sketch "Winter Morning" by Svend Svensen. Five scrapbooks, 1894-1968 contain clippings and photographs of Cameron, his wife, family members, and works of art.
Also included are clippings, 1888-1950, exhibition announcements and catalogs, 1899-1946, a catalog, 1926, for works by John Singer Sargent, and other printed material; material concerning Cameron's instructor Jean Paul Laurens, and reproductions of works of art including 43 engraved copies of classic works. Photographs, 1890-1918, include 19 of Cameron, 22 of his wife, 18 of family and friends, miscellaneous travel views, and works of art by the Camerons and others.

Mural painter; Chicago, Ill. Studied at the Chicago Academy of Design, the Art Students League of New York, and was a student of Cabanel, Constant and Laurens in Paris. His wife, Marie Gelon Cameron, was born in Paris, and was also a student of Cabanel, Constant and Laurens.

Donated 1988 by Arthur B. Carpenter and Marjorie L. Kimberlin, Cameron's nephew and niece.

Correspondence, sketches, sketchbooks, clippings, and exhibition announcements. Papers record the career of Bizinsky from his 1946-1951 years in Paris and his lifelong friendship with crusading Atlanta Constitution editor Ralph McGill. Also included are 2 pages (4 sides) of Bizinsky's ink sketches of horses, a 1967 sketchbook, a sketch diary and loose sketches. Among the correspondents are Edward P. Morgan, the noted journalist and newsman, and Philipe Soupault, French poet and art critic (one letter, in French).
Biographical / Historical:
Painter, teacher; Los Angeles, Calif. Bizinsky was a post-impressionist painter of city and landscapes. He attended classes at Atlanta's High Museum of Art, and worked as a cartoonist for the Atlanta Constitution under editor Ralph McGill, who became his mentor, a lifelong friend, and collector of Bizinsky's work. He later attended the Art Students' League in N.Y. and the École Nationale Supérieure des Beauz-Arts in Paris. From 1946-1951 he worked in Paris with fauvist Emile-Othon Friesz and exppressionist Yves Brayer. He returned to the U.S. in 1951 under a scholarship from the Huntington Hartford Foundation in Southern California, and settled in Los Angeles where he became active in the Westwood Art Association.

Scope and Contents:
The papers of A.G. (Abel George) Warshawsky date from circa 1900 to 1988 and measure 3.8 linear feet. The papers contain biographical materials; scattered correspondence, most of which consists of letters from Warshawsky to his wife Ruth; writings, including versions of Warshawsky's autobiography; printed materials; two scrapbooks; photographs and eight photo albums; twenty-six sketchbooks; and artworks by Warshawsky and others.

Biographical materials consist of passports, an identification card, and a Who's Who entry. Correspondence is scattered and contains letters written by A.G. Warshawsky to his wife Ruth. There are also telegrams of congratulations for the Warshawskys' 1941 marriage and a few letters from museums and institutions regarding Warshawsky's art.

Writings and notes include three versions of Warshawsky's autobiography entitled: "My Brush with Life," "Adventures with Color and Brush," and "Warshawsky's Autobiography." The autobiography concerns his life in Paris, activities, and acquaintances as a young art student in Paris. Also found are other writings about art and a notebook.

Printed material includes exhibition catalogs, xeroxed copies of news clippings and a clippings file concerning Warshawsky's career, published material, and reproductions of works of art. Also found is a printed portfolio comprised of an introduction to Warshawsky and reproductions of his paintings.

There is one original and one xeroxed scrapbook, containing news clippings, and exhibition materials from 1913 to 1960.

Photographs includes eight photo albums and photographs of Warshawsky, of family and friends, and of works of art. The bulk of the photo albums contain photographs of works of art. Two photo albums consist of personal photos of Warshawsky and his wife Ruth in their home in California. Other photographs are of Warshawsky painting in his studio, with his art, and of his wife, family, friends, and artist models.

Twenty-six sketchbooks are primarily in pencil and are undated or unidentified. Some sketchbooks include place names such as Monterey and Carmel, California, Mexico, and Paris.

Additional artwork includes loose sketches and a print by Warshawsky. Also found are prints and drawings by others, including Goya, Edwin Kaufman, and Paul de Lassence.

Biographical / Historical:
Impressionist painter A.G. Warshawsky (1883-1962) was active in Paris and Monterey, California.

Abel George "Buck" Warshawsky was born in Sharon, Pennsylvania in 1883. He spent his childhood in Cleveland, Ohio where he studied at the Cleveland Art Institute. Warshawsky moved to New York where he studied at the Art Students League and the National Academy of Design. His brother, Alexander also became an artist.

In 1909, Abel Warshawsky left the U.S. for Paris where he remained for thirty years. There, he developed his unique style, combining Impressionism and Realism. He returned to the United States annually, mostly to sell his paintings, but remained active in the Parisian art scene until 1939. He exhibited his works in Cleveland, New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Paris.

Before the start of World War II, Warshawsky left Paris and settled in Monterey, California. Warshawsky married Ruth Tate in 1941. He died from heart failure in 1962. His works are in the permanent collections of the Akron Art institute, the Cleveland museum of Art, the Luxembourg Museum, the De Young Museum, the Petit Palais, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
Separated Materials:
The Western Reserve Historical Society in Cleveland, Ohio holds the Abel G. Warshawsky Family papers.
Provenance:
The bulk of the A.G. Warshawsky papers were donated in 1996 by Froma Goldberg, Warshawsky's niece. In 1978, Ruth Warshawsky donated a typescript copy of her husband's autobiography, "My Brush with Life."

Summary:
The papers of painter Houghton Cranford Smith measure 2.2 linear feet and date from 1890-1991. They consist of eight scrapbooks compiled by his widow containing correspondence with family and friends, biographical materials, sketches, school work, extensive clippings, exhibition catalogs, travel documents and numerous photographs of family and friends.
Scope and Content Note:
The papers of painter Houghton Cranford Smith measure 2.2 linear feet and date from 1890-1991. They consist of eight scrapbooks compiled by his widow containing correspondence with family and friends, biographical materials, sketches, school work, extensive clippings, exhibition catalogs, travel documents and numerous photographs of family and friends.

Biographical materials include photographs of Smith, of his artwork and of friends and family in Provincetown and New Mexico, school documents from the Foebel Academy, the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn and the Art Students' League, autographed menus, correspondence, including postcards and letters to family and friends sent from Bermuda and Jamaica, customs declarations, exhibition catalogs, newspaper clippings, a passport to Chile, newsletters, and Smith's teaching contract from the University of Kansas. Additionally, there are significant photographs and letters documenting Smith's art studies with E. Ambrose Webster at the Cape Cod School of Art in Provincetown, Massachusetts.

The collection also includes Smith's correspondence from France and South America. A significant portion of the collection includes papers from his time in France from 1913-1914, where he studied at the Parisian art school Academie Julian. These include a log from a tandem bicycle trip with classmate Harold P. Browne, an invitation to the Bal Randolphe, a Browne Art Class brochure and a narrative entitled "A Party of Fugitives from France," which describes Smith's forced fleeing from France after the French mobilization in 1914. There are also papers describing his South American travels which include notes and correspondence about Argentina, Uruguay and his time in Chile, which spans five years.

Materials documenting Smith's return to France and studies at the Academie Ozenfant from 1926 to 1933 include Smith's passport, ship passenger lists and other travel documents, correspondence with family, French identification letters, exhibition catalogs, newspaper clippings and his Academie Ozenfant list of classes and student card. Of particular note are correspondence from and a picture of Sir Walter Kitchener, governor of Bermuda, and letters from wife Elena Peralta to her parents-in-law. Topics covered in the correspondence of this scrapbook include sons Houghton Jr. and Gerrit and the birth of daughter Florence, financial difficulties, art teachers Amadee Ozenfant and Andree L'hote and the family's travels to Bermuda, New Mexico and New York City.

Materials from later in Smith's life include correspondence from Smith to second wife Laura Gilbert Williams, exhibition catalogs and registers, photographs of artwork, newspaper clippings of reviews received for Smith's exhibited paintings and congratulatory letters from family and friends on Smith's successful exhibits and feature article in The American Artist. Additionally, there is significant correspondence with the Passedoit Gallery, Homer Saint-Gaudens of the Carnegie Institute regarding the exhibition and purchase of Smith's artwork and Smith's gifted painting to the Butler Institute of American Art. Additionally, there are several biographical newspaper articles and a biographical sketch written by his wife Laura after his death.

Of note is the artist's original handwritten notes and final published version of his reminiscence "The Provincetown I Remember," notes about painting with various colors and color charts, related assignments from Smith's Color Theory Class, a signed copy of the book Color by E. Ambrose Webster, Smith's former art teacher, pencil sketches, a class notebook about lettering and an address book.

As requested by the donor, the original arrangement has been maintained, but the collection has been rehoused for preservation purposes. The collection is arranged as 4 series.

Biographical Note:
Painter Houghton Cranford Smith (1887-1983) traveled extensively and painted throughout his life. He lived and studied art in France, South America, New York City and Provincetown. He had three children, Houghton Jr., Gerrit and Florence with his first wife, Elena Peralta. He held the position of Assistant Professor at the University of Kansas department of Drawing and Painting from 1921-1925.

Smith became widely recognized for his artwork in the 1940s. He married his second wife, Laura Gilbert Williams, in 1941. He has exhibited at many venues including the Passedoit Gallery, Corcoran Gallery, Richmond Museum, Columbia Art Museum, Walker Memorial Gallery, Art Institute of Kansas City and the Provincetown Art Association. For six consecutive years he was represented at Carnegie Institute's annual invitation exhibition.
