Biographical Note:

Sylvia Fein (1919-2024) was a painter and author in Martinez, California. She was part of the Magic Realist Group of artists that originated at the University of Wisconsin.

Fein was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and from 1938 to 1942 she studied art at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. While there she became friends with fellow artists Marshall Glasier, John Wilde, Dudley Huppler, and Karl Priebe. In 1942 she married William Scheuber and briefly had a factory job in Milwaukee testing switches for naval planes. From 1944 to 1947 Fein lived and traveled throughout Mexico. Much of the work produced during this period was included in a solo exhibition of her paintings at the Perls Galleries in 1946. She and her husband then moved to northern California and had a daughter, Heidi. During the 1950s and 1960s, Fein continued to paint in her home studio.

In 1973 Fein decided to take a break from painting and published two books, Heidi's Horse (1976) and First Drawings: Genesis of Visual Thinking (1993). These works were greatly inspired by her friendship with art educator and researcher, Henry Shaefer-Simmern. In 2003 she resumed painting. She was featured in the group show, "With Friends: Six Magic Realists, 1940-1965" at the University of Wisconsin in 2005 and in a solo retrospective at the Bakersfield Art Museum in 2007. From 1970 to 2000 Fein was also active in the community of Pleasant Hill, California, as a member of several public services commissions.

Scope and Contents:

The papers of painter, teacher and curator, Barbara Aubin, measure 5.1 linear feet and date from circa 1867-2014, with the bulk of the material dating from 1940-2014. The collection comprises biographical materials consisting of student records from the Art Institute of Chicago, planners and address books, resumes, and unidentified material on electronic discs; correspondence with galleries regarding exhibitions, with friends including Kathy Kucera, and others; writings including drafts and notes for articles, and poems by Aubin; exhibition files containing planning documents, promotional material, and video recordings for Send a Postcard to Barbara (1980), Women's Day (2004, 2005), and a retrospective of Aubin's work at Elmhurst College (2008); professional files consisting of 4+ Decades of Art project material, membership records, Candidate for Professor binders, letters of support from colleagues, and a files for other professional activities; printed materials mainly featuring Aubin and her artwork; scrapbooks consisting of printed materials, photographs, and other material relating to Aubin's exhibitions and career; artwork consisting of collages by Aubin, prints, and vintage paintings; and photographic materials with slides, photographic prints, and negatives of Aubin, personal snapshots of friends and family, exhibitions, and works of art.

Biographical / Historical:

Barbara Aubin (1928-2014) was a painter, teacher, and curator in Chicago, Illinois known for her work with postcard art and collage.

In 1949, she received a B.A. in sociology from Carleton College in M.N. She went on to earn both a B.A. and M.A. in art education from the School of the Art Institute in Chicago in 1954 and 1955 respectively. After graduation, she traveled to France and Italy on the George D. Brown Foreign Travel Fellowship in 1955-1956 and to Haiti for a Fulbright Fellowship in 1958-1960.

Aubin taught at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1956-1958 and 1960-1967, Chicago State University in 1971-1991, and was a visiting artist at St. Louis Community College in 1980-1981. She was a member of the Chicago Artists Coalition, Chicago Society of Artists, and was a founder of the Chicago Women's Caucus for Art.

Provenance:

The Barbara Aubin papers were donated in 2016 by the Barbara Aubin estate via Amie Hyman, executor and in 2023 by the Union League Club of Chicago via Mark Tunney, General Manager, and Jane Stevens, trustee.

The papers document Davis' career and personal life more heavily than that of Helwig, however, material related to both individuals are present. Included is biographical information; correspondence; exhibition and business files; research and printed material; artwork and sketches; photographs; and papers and digital material related to both Helwig and Davis' teaching endeavors.

The papers of artists and art educators Harold Helwig and Lenore Davis measue 14.5 linear feet and 7.85 Gigabytes and contains correspondence, video recordings, some in digital format, photographs and slides, exhibition ephemera, clippings and various other printed material, and artwork.

Biographical material includes resumes, school papers, artist inventories, and contacts lists. The collection's correspondence is both personal and business related, and includes a series of letters from Davis' mother, Mary Shope Davis, to her brother and sister-in-law from the 1940s. Other material found in this collection documents Helwig's and Davis' involvement in exhibitions; national and local craft-related guilds and associations, education; sale of artwork and services; research material; and printed ephemera. The collection's photographs include the personal and professional side of Helwig and Davis' life.

Biographical / Historical:

Harold Helwig (1938-2012) and Lenore Davis (1936-1995) were a craft artist couple as well as craft educators living primarily in Newport Kentucky.

Harold "Bill" Helwig (1938-2012) was an enamel artist and educator born in Wellington, Kansas in 1938. Helwig received his MS in watercolor from Fort Hayes Kansas State College in 1961. After a short stint in the military, Helwig became the assistant director of the Creative Craft Center at the State University of New York, Buffalo (he served as an assistant professor in the design department there as well). In 1977, Helwig took the position of director at Vitrearc, a division of Ceramic Coating Co., in Newport, Kentucky. After Vitrearc, Helwig's primary focus shifted towards creating enamel art and teaching its process. Included in Helwig's artistic accomplishments was a selection in the international exhibition Objects: USA(1969), exhibitions in the Ornamental Metals Museum in Memphis, Museum of Contemporary Crafts in New York City, and the CCA Galleries in Cambridge, England. Helwig was an active member of the American Craft Council as co-founder and editor of Glass On Metal. He received the Enamellist Society's Creative Arts Award in 2001.

Lenore Davis (1936-1995) was a fiber artist and educator born in Missoula Montana in 1936. She received her BS from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1958. After college, Davis taught high school art, and held a position as a craft director with the US Army Special Services in Germany. After these jobs, Davis received her MFA in ceramics from Cranbrook Academy of Art, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, in 1965, and was awarded a Fulbright scholarship to study ceramics in Portugal in 1966. After her scholarship, Davis began her career as a full-time artist showcasing her work individually and as part of group exhibitions at craft shows, galleries, and museums across the United States. She also led workshops, made instructional videos, and worked for commissions. Davis was a member of the Surface Design Association, National Institute of American Doll Artists, American Craft Council, Kentucky Guild of Craftsmen, and Greater Cincinnati Guild of Craftsmen.

Harold Helwig and Lenore Davis married in 1968. As a couple they worked collaboratively on two-person shows as well as part of larger group exhibitions. In addition to conducting various workshops and lectures, both Davis and Helwig taught classes at Penland School of Craft between the late-1970s and mid-1990s.

Correspondence includes personal correspondence with family and friends, business correspondence with galleries and other institutions, memos, and letters in regards to a 1977 calendar featuring his artwork.

Writings includes lectures, essays written by Askin and others, reports for grants, and miscellaneous notes.

Biographical / Historical:

Walter Askin (1929-2021) was a printmaker, painter, sculptor, and art educator born in Pasadena, California. He studied painting, printmaking, and sculpture at Pasadena City College, and continued his studies at University of California Berkley. Askin also performed graduate work at Oxford where he helped start the Museum of Modern Art. Askin began teaching art in 1956 at California State University, Los Angeles. Askin is a member of the College Arts Association of America, and he served as president of the Los Angeles Printmaking Society.

The papers of painter and printmaker Herman Maril measure 8.6 linear feet and date from 1932-2023, bulk dates 1934-1986. The papers document Maril's career as a painter and art educator based in Baltimore, Maryland, through biographical material, personal and professional correspondence, writings, teaching and project files, gallery and organization files, printed material and video recordings, and photographs.

Scope and Contents:

The papers of painter and printmaker Herman Maril measure 8.6 linear feet and date from 1932-2023, bulk dates 1934-1986. The papers document Maril's career as a painter and art educator based in Baltimore, Maryland, through biographical material, personal and professional correspondence, writings, teaching and project files, gallery and organization files, printed material and video recordings, and photographs.

Biographical material includes resumes and short biographical profiles, military service records, awards and certificates, sketches and greeting card designs, and limited financial records. There are also an Herman Maril interview transcript and a sound recording of an interview.

Correspondence consists of a mixture of personal and professional correspondence with friends, colleagues, artists, universities, and galleries. Notable correspondents include Mary Ainsworth, Julian Anthony, William Bronk, Martha and Sheldon Cheney, Sidney Cox, and Olin Dows.

Maril's writings include one journal and drafts of artist statements, short stories, essays, and lectures. Writings by others include essays on Herman Maril and other subjects.

Teaching and project files includes documents from schools and universities where Herman Maril taught art and material related to the Federal Art Project sponsored by the Works Progress Administration. Most of the teaching files are from the Cummington School, King-Smith School, and the University of Maryland. The Federal Art Project materials include correspondence and photographs related to murals that Maril created for two post offices.

The gallery files document Herman Maril's relationships with various galleries that represented him or exhibited his artwork over the years through correspondence, exhibition catalogs and announcements, price lists, inventory lists, and sales records. Organization files consist of membership records such as by-laws, meeting minutes, newsletters, bulletins, and brochures.

Printed materials mostly consists of books, exhibition catalogs and announcements, magazine articles, and newsclippings about Herman Maril. There is also a documentary on Maril and video recordings of various people such as curators and museum directors talking about Maril. There are a few clippings on other artists and subjects.

Photographs consists of black and white photographs of various Herman Maril paintings. There is one transparency and a few slides of paintings, but the rest of the series are photographic prints.

Biographical / Historical:

Herman Maril (1908-1986) was a Modernist painter, printmaker and teacher in Baltimore, Maryland. Maril was a native of Baltimore and studied at the Maryland Institute of Fine Arts. During the Great Depression, he worked on the Federal Art Project sponsored by the Works Progress Administration and created murals for the post office of Scranton, Pennsylvania, and Alta Vista, Virginia. Maril had a long career as an educator and taught at various places such as the Cummington School and, after his World War II military service, the King-Smith School, among other places. His longest tenure was at the University of Maryland, College Park, where he was a professor of painting for over 31 years from 1946 until his retirement in 1977. Maril married his wife Esta in 1948 and they had two children, David and Nadja.

Maril exhibited widely and has been continuously represented by major galleries since the 1930s. According to the Herman Maril Foundation, "Maril's work has been featured in over 50 solo exhibitions at galleries and museums around the country. Maril's work is included in over 100 museums," and "In 1983, University of Maryland University College (UMUC) established a permanent Herman Maril Gallery to showcase his works."

Maril's artwork is part of the collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, The Phillips Collection, The Whitney Museum, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and many other museums across the country and abroad. Maril passed away in 1986.

The Archives of American Art also has oral history interviews with Maril conducted by Dorothy Seckler on 1965 September 5, conducted by Robert Brown on 1971 July 21, and conducted by Maril's nephew, Ronald E. Becker, on 1980 July 14.

Provenance:

The Herman Maril papers were donated to the Archives of American Art in several installments from 1978-1981 by Herman Maril with the bulk of the material donated in 2018 by the Herman Maril Foundation via David Maril.
