Summary:
This collection consists of the complete set of Seaboard & Western Airlines annual reports, from 1947-1979, as well as the following two Seaboard & Western technical manuals: Canadair CL-44 Operating Manual and a Lockheed Model 1049 Super Constellation Flight Manual. In the Lockheed 1049 manual, there is also a Lockheed 1049 exam (completed by Lawrence Nelson), a memo, and two issues of "Canadair Service News", one from October 1960 and one from September/October 1961.
Scope and Contents:
This collection consists of the complete set of Seaboard & Western Airlines annual reports, from 1947-1979, as well as the following two Seaboard & Western technical manuals: Canadair CL-44 Operating Manual and a Lockheed Model 1049 Super Constellation Flight Manual. Biographical / Historical:
Seaboard & Western Airlines was founded by Arthur and Raymond Norden. These brothers were both World War II veterans of the Army's Air Transport Command. Over a 33 year period the airline these men helped create established itself as the preeminent carrier of cargo on the world's richest trade routes. This airline was the first to fly an all-cargo flight across the Atlantic, the first to land and takeoff at Idlewild (now John F. Kennedy) Airport, the first to fly support for the Berlin Airlift, the first to fly a Military Air Transport Service (MATS) charter, the first to support Pacific Airlift for the Korean Conflict (with a planeload of Air Force fighter pilots), the first to order and operate the Lockheed 1049D Super Constellation, the first to order and operate the Douglas DC-8-55, the first to order and operate the DC-8-63 CF, the first to order and operate the Boeing 747F (first 747 built as a freighter from the beginning of its production), the first all-cargo airline to join the International Air Transport Association (IATA), and the first airline in the world to equip its entire fleet with Inertial Navigation Systems. On April 4th, 1961 the company's name changed to Seaboard World Airlines after Richard M. Jackson was brought in as the new Chairman and President. On October 1, 1980 Seaboard World Airlines was absorbed by The Flying Tiger Line, Inc., and on December 16, 1988 The Flying Tiger Line, Inc., was absorbed by the Federal Express Corporation.

Scope and Contents:
This collection consists of twenty-two snapshots taken by Phillip Jones, many of which include images of his friend Jesse Brown, as well as friends John Brannon, Sam Clauzel, and Rex Vannoy, during their Pensacola training. They are shown posing in front of a North American SNJ Texan. There are also a few shots of Pensacola training facilities as well as Sikorsky R-4s and other various training aircraft.
Biographical / Historical:
Jesse L. Brown (1926-1950) was the first African-American Navy pilot. Born in Hattiesburg, Mississippi to sharecroppers, Brown attended Ohio State University and enlisted in the US Naval Reserve on 8 July 1946. That following spring, he accepted an appointment as a midshipman in the US Navy. Brown attended the Navy preflight school in Ottumwa, Iowa, followed by flight training at Pensacola, where he was one of only six (out of 100) to complete the training. In 1948, Brown began a tour of duty with VF-32 at Quonset Point, RI, and was commissioned an ensign on April 15th of that year. In June 1950, VF-32 was operating from USS Leyte in the Mediterranean on a routine cruise when it was diverted to the Korean War. By October 1950, Brown was flying F4U-4 Corsair missions from USS Leyte. Brown became a section leader and received the Air Medal for daring attacks against the enemy before getting shot down by enemy fire and perishing in the wreckage of his aircraft. Brown was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and on March 18, 1972, the Navy christened the USS Jesse L. Brown (DE-1098) the first time that a Naval vessel had been named for an African-American.

Summary:
This collection consists of material relating to the long military career (1918-1948) of aviator Lewis Selwyn Webster, including five of Webster's pilot's log books as well as numerous photographs, letters, news clippings, and other documents. A small section of the collection pertains to Webster's son, Lewis Frazer Webster, who served with the U.S. Air Force and was killed in action in Korea in 1952.
Scope and Contents:
This collection consists of material relating to the military career of Lewis Selwyn Webster, including five of Webster's pilot's log books, covering the dates 1918-1932, as well as numerous photographs (including two panoramic photographs), letters, and news clippings, and other documents gathered into a scrapbook binder. One of the panoramic photographs is 19 by 7.75 inches and shows the Station Supply Department at Duncan Field, San Antonio Texas, 1929. The second panoramic photograph is 40 by 8 inches and shows the commissioned officers of the 1st Provisional Air Brigade, who were gathered to take part in the Bombing Maneuvers at Langley Field, June 1921. The scrapbook binder contains photographs of Webster during flight training and subsequent military service; Webster's military records; photographs of various U.S. Army facilities; aerial photographs of various locations; a copy of the rules and regulations, Webster's flight log, and Webster's report pertaining to the 1919 Transcontinental Reliability and Endurance Test; news clippings; numerous photographs of the 1921 German battleship bombing trials; photographs and correspondence pertaining to the Panama Canal Zone, a 1924 memo from Mason M. Patrick to Commanding Officers regarding aircraft accidents; a program for the dedication of Randolph Field; and news clippings pertaining to Webster's participation in an aerial search for a gang of kidnappers. Aircraft depicted in the photographs include Dayton Wright DH-4, Curtiss JN-4D Jenny, de Havilland (Airco) D.H.9, Martin (Glenn L.) MB-2, Curtiss F-5L (PN-5), Curtiss O-1E Falcon, Douglas O-38, Douglas O-2, Boeing P-12, and the Handley Page H.P.42. Other photograph subjects include General William "Billy" Mitchell and aerial views of the 1933 Century of Progress exposition (World's Fair) in Chicago, Illinois. The collection also contains a copy of the publication A List of Airplane Pilot Officers of the United States Army Air Service Commissioned Prior to November 12, 1918.

A small portion of the collection pertains to Lewis Selwyn Webster's son, Lewis Frazer Webster, who served with the U.S. Air Force and was killed in action in Korea in 1952. This series contains military records of Lewis Frazer Webster, photographs, and news clippings. Aircraft depicted in the photographs in this series include Republic P-47 (F-47) Thunderbolt, Lockheed (F-80) P-80A Shooting Star, North American F-86 Sabre, and the Gloster Meteor.

Biographical / Historical:
Lewis Selwyn Webster was born in 1892. After graduating from high school, Webster enrolled in the University of Illinois but left college to join the U.S. Army Air Service during World War I. Webster completed Ground School at the University of Illinois in January 1918 and then went to flight training at Rich Field in Texas which he completed in June of that year. Webster then completed a flying instructor's course at Brooks Field, Texas before being ordered to Call Field, Texas and subsequently to Langley Field, Virginia. In October 1919, Webster participated in the first mass transcontinental air race, dubbed by the Air Service the "Transcontinental Reliability and Endurance Test," which was organized by General William "Billy" Mitchell. Webster finished seventh. Webster served under Mitchell with the 1st Provisional Air Brigade and, in June and July of 1921, participated in the sinking of German battleships in an area off the Chesapeake Bay under a program of aerial bombing tests operated jointly by the U.S. Army and the U.S. Navy. Under this same program, Webster participated in the sinking of the USS Alabama (BB-8) in September of that year. From 1922 to 1925, Webster served at France Field in the Panama Canal Zone in the capacity of engineering officer of the 7th Observation Squadron. Webster returned to Langley Field in November 1925 and completed Air Corps Tactical School there in 1939. From 1942 to 1944, Webster was the Commanding Officer of the 36th Fighter Squadron in Australia and New Guinea, and from 1945 to 1948 he commanded the 4832nd Specialized Depot in Topeka, Kansas. In 1948, Webster retired from military service as a Colonel and was active in civic and social service organizations in Lakeland, Florida until his death in 1957.

Scope and Contents:
This collection consists of a 16 by 11 inch white scrapbook detailing Ward Hitt's Korean War service. The scrapbook contains newspaper articles, military orders, detailed correspondence, and photographs, both snapshots and official photography, showing aircraft (North America F-86 Sabres), base life and Air Force pilots and personnel.

Biographical / Historical:
Ward Hitt, Jr. was a North American F-86 Sabre fighter pilot during the Korean War, 1950-1951. Hitt entered Air Force cadet training in 1948 and graduated from Williams Field in February 1949. He received his promotion to first lieutenant after he completed his radar training later in October 1949. Hitt was then stationed at Johnson Air Force Base (AFB), Japan, followed by Kimpo Field, Seoul Korea, where he saw General MacArthur visit. Hitt was on the first jet fighter mission, on December 17, 1950, as a member of the F-86 Sabre-equipped 4th Fighter Interceptor Group which destroyed eight MiG MiG-15 Fagot jets. Hitt was then ordered to Forward Aircraft Controller Duty, and was assigned to the 5th Republic of Korea (ROK) Corps, 36 Regiment February 3 through 26, 1951 in central Korea. Hitt returned to Japan in June of 1951 to attend the Combat Orientation School at Johnson AFB until September 1951. For his service during the Korean War, Hitt received the Air Medal.

This accession consists in part of a total of over 700 copy negatives representing images from the United States Air Force Pre-1954 Still Photos Collection. These copy negatives were made by NASM from Air Force negatives during the period when the Air Force Pre-1954 collection was on loan to NASM. Several related resources that were created by NASM staff to support the larger collection are to be considered as a part of accession XXXX-0596 as well, including the following databases: USAFMAIN.DB, USAFCAPS.DB, COLOR.DB, USAFART.DB, AFOLDSUB.DB and NOSEART.DB. Also included is one document box of material that provides cross-referencing information for the USAF art collection, another containing 73 8 x 10 inch prints and six 4 x 5 inch prints, the film and videotape used to produce discs 3 and 4 of NASM's videodisc program, the videodiscs themselves and the finding aids produced by NASM staff to facilitate access to the images on discs 3 and 4.
Biographical / Historical:
The U.S. Air Force Pre-1954 Still Photo Collection, on loan to and administered by NASM during the period from 1983 through 1997, consisted of approximately 145,000 images (5,300 in color) and covered the history of the U.S. Air Force and its predecessors (U.S. Army Air Corps and U.S. Army Air Forces) prior to 1954. The photographs were collected by the Air Force as a representative record and divided into five roughly chronological series: Pre-1940, World War II, Pre-1954 Domestic, Pre-1954 Non-Domestic and Korean War. On January 1, 1998 this collection was transferred to the Still Pictures Branch of the National Archives (Record Group 342, Series FH).

This collection consists of 3 cubic feet of materials relating to Robert Love's career in aviation: both his military career, especially relating to his exploits in the Korean War; and his civilian career, most notably his time as a test pilot with Northrop and his involvement with the Reno Air Races. This collection consists of the following types of archival material: photographs, color slides, 16 mm motion pictures films, U-matic videos, technical manuals, certificates, military records, correspondence, licenses, individual flight records, Northrop publications, and interviews of Love on audio tape cassettes.
Biographical / Historical:
Major Robert J. "Bob" Love (1917-1986) had an impressive military and civilian aviation career. Born in Grand Prairie, Alberta, Canada, his family moved to New York when he was young. Love learned to fly in 1940 and before the United States entered World War II, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force. After the United States joined the war, Love joined the United States Army Air Corps and flew a variety of aircraft, including Lockheed P-38s and North American P-51 Mustangs, but was kept in a training command stateside. Love represented the USAF in the 1947 and 1949 Cleveland Air Races. In the late 1940s, Love left the Air Corps to become a Commanding Officer in the Air National Guard. His unit was activated for the Korean War, and he was eventually transferred to the 4th Fighter Interceptor Wing, where he flew North American F-86 Sabre jets. He flew over 50 combat missions between January - March 1952 and became an ace by shooting down six MiG MiG-15 Fagots. After the Korean War, Love left the military to become a test pilot for Northrop Aircraft where he tested the Northrop F-89 Scorpion, Northrop F-20 (F-5G) Tigershark, and Northrop T-38 Talon. After his stint at Northrop, he spent time in Central America as a mercenary fighter pilot in the wars between El Salvador and Nicaragua, and later tried to establish a rubber tree plantation in Guatemala. He returned to the United States and had a career flying as an executive pilot for a number of firms, including for Golden Industries. In 1964, Love raced a Mustang in the inaugural Reno Air Races; he crossed the finish line first, but lost the championship on points based on previous heats. He continued to be active in the Reno Races and for many years was the official Reno Race Check Pilot, approving new race pilots and recently modified World War II fighter-racers. Love was also active in the western United States air show circuit where he had a featured aerobatic act flying his Mustang P-51D.

This collection consists of 187 color slides documenting Rash's military career and his tours in China, Korea, and Viet Nam. The collection is divided into the following series: China, 1947-1948; USA 1948-1949; Korea, 1952-1954; Vietnam, 1966; and Vietnam 1968-69. Marine Corps aircraft are represented.
Biographical / Historical:
Richard Rash was a Marine Corps aviator who flew in World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. During World War II, Rash flew Grumman F4F Wildcats and Corsairs, as he accompanied dive bombers and torpedo bombers on their missions. After World War II, Rash opted for duty in China, and reported to VMF-211. His tour of China ended with the Communist takeover in 1949. He then went on several tours of duty in Southern Europe and the Mediterranean, including service in Greece, Turkey, Spain, and Italy. Subsequently, Rash was called to duty in the Korean war, and later the Vietnam war, before retiring in 1973. During the Korean and Vietnam eras, he flew the following aircraft: North American Sabre F-86, Grumman F9F-5, McDonnell F2H-2, North American FJ-2; Grumman F8F-8, Douglas AD, and Beechcraft SNB.
