Summary:
This collection largely documents Chillson's affiliation with the ARS, particularly his presidency in the early 1950s, and includes correspondence with ARS members, aerospace companies, and organizations such as the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the British Interplanetary Society, the International Astronautical Federation, and the Institute of Aeronautical Sciences. There is also correspondence with Wernher von Braun and Esther C. Goddard. Biographical/Historical note:
Charles W. Chillson (1910 - ) was an expert in air and rocket propulsion. Chillson received his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University in 1931 and went to work in Chemical Engineering at the California Institute of Technology from 1931 until 1936. During those years, Chillson worked with C. K. Greene on a mechanical controllable-pitch propeller which progressed through whirl-testing at the Army Air Force Engineering Division at Wright Field, OH. Chillson then moved to Curtiss-Wright's Curtiss Propeller Division as an engineer and project designer (1936-1940) and was later promoted to chief researcher for the years 1940 to 1947. In 1947, Chillson won the Collier Trophy for his propeller work and became chief engineer of the newly formed Rocket Department at Curtiss-Wright. In 1950, he became program chairman of the American Rocket Society (ARS) Board of Directors and was later elected vice president (1951) and president (1952-1955), before being made a fellow of the ARS in 1956.

Scope and Contents:
This collection documents Hans von Ohain's professional career in propulsion. While there is documentation on both his work in Germany and the United States, the majority of the collection covers his career in the latter -- especially his positions at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. The following types of material are included: magazine articles written by, or about, von Ohain; engine manufacturing brochures; awards and recommendations for von Ohain; books; drawings of the He S 3B turbojet engine; photographs; flow charts; correspondence; and historical papers.
Biographical / Historical:
Hans von Ohain is the developer of the first turbojet engine used in flight and is a renowned expert in the field of propulsion and energy conversion. Von Ohain received a doctorate in Physics and Allied Mechanics in 1935 at the University of Goetingen, Germany, and was employed by Ernst Heinkel during the 1930s. In 1939 the first turbojet flight took place with the flight of the Heinkel He 178, which had the He S 3B engine. Two years later, von Ohain developed the He S 8A, which was the first jet fighter aircraft. In 1947 von Ohain came to the United States and became a research scientist at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio. In 1963 he became chief scientist of the Aerospace Research Laboratory and in 1975, chief scientist of the Aero Propulsion Laboratory. After retiring in 1979, von Ohain served as Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Dayton and as a consultant to both government and industry. Von Ohain has published more than 30 technical papers and has registered 19 United States patents.

Scope and Contents:
This collection consists of corporate records, magazine articles, photographs and a scrapbook containing newspaper clippings on Power Jets, Ltd. Most of the material in the collection also relates to Frank Whittle and his accomplishments. Included are some of Whittle's writings and the agreements he signed for Power Jets.
Biographical / Historical:
J.C.B. Tinling, an ex-RAF pilot, was directly involved with the work of Sir Frank Whittle, inventor of the first British turbojet engine. Tinling, along with R. Dudley Williams, initiated Power Jets, Ltd., a company incorporated in 1936 to develop Whittle's jet engine ideas.

This collection is an incomplete set of microfilmed translations of captured German documents mainly relating to supersonic research, swept-back wings, jet-propulsion, patents, explosives, ballistics, missiles, compressors, and other aeronautical subjects. This set contains rolls 1, 3-4, 6, 8-9, and 14.

Note: The digital images in this finding aid were repurposed from scans made by an outside contractor for a commercial product and may show irregular cropping and orientation in addition to color variations resulting from damage to and deterioration of the original objects.
Arrangement:
Documents are filmed in Army Air Forces Air Technical Services Command (AAF ATSC) Translation File Number order. Files numbers are in the form "CGD-#".
Biographical / Historical:
In the final days of World War II, the advancing Allied armies captured a large number of documents from the German and Japanese governments. These documents were taken to various sites in Europe and the United States for evaluation and appraisal. Those documents considered valuable were microfilmed for preservation.

Summary:
This collection consists of publications issued by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory documenting JPL's work in jet and rocket propulsion, launch vehicle development, and planetary reconnaissance. Most of the material relates to work performed under NASA auspices, but significant material from Army- and Air Force-related research is also included.
Scope and Content Note:
This collection consists of reports published by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and gathered by the staff of the National Air and Space Museum (NASM) from a variety of sources. The reports cover a broad range of subjects investigated at JPL over the period 1947-1980, with the bulk of the material from the NASA era, 1960-1974. This collection is in no way a complete set of all JPL publications, even for the document series represented. Following the transfer of the Bellcomm Inc. Technical Library Collection (now National Air and Space Archives Accession XXXX-0093) to the NASM in the early 1970s, Museum staff attempted to flesh out the JPL Publications Collection with materials from Bellcomm. Those items which could be positively identified as coming from the Bellcomm Collection (approximately 5½ cubic feet of material) were returned to that collection during processing.

JPL publications were numbered consecutively in series based on the contract under which the work was performed. A typical publication number would be "PR 4-112," in which "PR" is an abbreviation for "Progress Report," "4" is the contract-based numerical prefix (4- was assigned to work performed under Ordnance Dept contract W-04-200-ORD-445), and "112" indicates the 112th publication of this kind issued under this contract. With the transfer of JPL to NASA control and the large number of reports expected under NASA contract, numerical prefixes were assigned to different types of publications, for instance 32- for Technical Reports, 33- for Technical Memoranda, and so forth.

JPL compiled subject bibliographies for work done under NASA contracts (primarily contracts NASw-6 and NAS7-100) and published these in the 39- series of documents, a partial set of which is contained within this collection. Further subject reference to JPL reports is available in Aeronautical Information: Abstracts, also published by JPL. A partial set of the abstracts is contained in the Bellcomm Collection.

Historical Note:
The Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) was established at the California Institute of Technology as the Guggenheim Analytical Laboratory in 1936 to investigate a variety of aeronautics-related topics. By the end of World War II the work at JPL, as it was then known, concentrated primarily on jet and rocket propulsion research under the auspices of the United States Army. JPL was transferred from Army to National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) control on the establishment of the latter in 1958. Under NASA auspices, JPL research expanded into trajectory analysis, planetary reconnaissance, and space communications.

The Reaction Research Society (RRS), formed in 1943, is a nonprofit civilian organization whose purpose is to aid in the development of reaction propulsion and its applications.

Scope and Contents:
This collection consists of a scrapbook containing 44 black and white photographs of various sizes as well as four typewritten pages describing the photographs and the flight tests they depict. Photographs are divided into five "exhibits." Exhibit I is noted to be the solid propellant jet unit. Exhibit II depicts flight tests conducted from April 7 to 24, 1942 at the US Army Air Forces Bombing & Gunnery Range, Muroc Dry Lake, California using a Douglas A-20A, of experimental liquid propellant jet units developed by the Air Corps Jet Propulsion Research Project at the California Institute of Technology. Liquid propellant jet units shown in this section are the experimental form of units later produced by Aerojet Engineering Corporation for the Army Air Forces. Exhibit III depicts flight tests conducted from January 7 to 8, 1943 at the US Army Air Forces Bombing & Gunnery Range, Muroc Dry Lake, California using a Douglas A-20B of liquid propellant jet units, Model AL-1000, designed by the Aerojet Engineering Corporation. Exhibit IV contains photographs of jet propulsion units that were in production at the Aerojet Engineering Corporation at the time the scrapbook was produced. Exhibit V contains photographs of selected Aerojet Engineering Corporation plant facilities.
Biographical / Historical:
In April 1942, the US Army Air Force was conducting flight testing of experimental liquid propellant units developed by the Air Corps Jet Propulsion Research Project at the California Institute of Technology to determine their effects on reduction of takeoff run, stability and control, high speed performance, blast effects, and reliability. The units were found to reduce takeoff distance by approximately one-third and increase maximum speed by approximately 40 miles per hour. However, improvements were recommended in terms of jet installation. In January 1943, flight tests were conducted by the US Army Air Force on Model AL-1000 liquid propellant jet units developed by Aerojet Engineering Corporation based on the April 1942 testing. The Aerojet units successfully reduced takeoff distance and increased flight velocity, as well as allowing for quick and easy servicing and or unit replacement. Aerojet Engineering Corporation began producing these different models of these units for the US Army Air Force subsequent to this testing.
