Scope and Contents:
This collection spans A.B. McMullen's aviation career and interests, from his involvement in WWI until his death. This collection includes correspondence, both personal and business, reports/material from his aviation corporations/distributorships and stint as Director of Florida Aviation and career in the NASAO. Also included are photographs, articles and newspaper clippings of his career as a barnstormer and of his military career.
Biographical / Historical:
Colonel Alexis B. McMullen participated in American aviation activities at the local, state and national level over a period of some 50 years, as well as international activities during two world wars. A.B. McMullen learned to fly during WWI, and he became an Aerobatic Flight Instructor and Base Engineering Officer. After the war, he barnstormed with Mabel Cody and owned/operated flying schools, aviation corporations and distributorships. In 1933 he became Florida's first State Director of Aviation. Under his leadership in this position, 84 new airports and flight strips were constructed and the first comprehensive state aviation map was published. From 1936-1942 McMullen served as Chief, Airports Section Bureau of Air Division. During WWII he actively served as Deputy Commander North African Division of Air Transport Command (ATC), stationed in Morocco. After the war he established the Washington, D.C. Headquarters of the National Association of State Aviation Officials (NASAO) which he continued to serve with until his retirement.

Summary:
George W. Beatty (-1955) was an Early Bird, aviator, and instructor.
Scope and Contents:
The George W. Beatty Collection (accessions 1989-0013 and 1991-0069) contains approximately one cubic foot of material relating to the career of this pioneering aviator. The bulk of the material dates from 1910 to 1912 and includes an Early Birds plaque, several small banners from flying meets, and a 1928 letter from Orville Wright. The collection also includes correspondence, a great deal of photographic material, and scrapbooks.

Biographical/Historical note:
Born in 1887 or 1888 in Whitehouse, New Jersey, George W. Beatty was employed as a young man as a linotype operator. He was shortly to enter the field that would define much of his life. In June of 1911 he enrolled at the Wright School at Nassau to be taught by Al Welsh. Soloing on July 23 of that year, he set a new two-man American altitude record on the same day. Throughout that summer, Beatty would set several more records, in altitude, weight-carrying and duration. On August 6, 1911, Beatty obtained license number 41 and subsequently attended meets where he was to break several American and world records. Also in that year, he would become the first to fly a plane in which air to ground communication was maintained throughout the flight.

Early in 1912, Beatty established a school on Long Island. Its proximity to New York allowed Beatty to become the first person to land on Manhattan when he flew over the city and into Central Park. He would soon need to take his skills elsewhere, however. After the unfortunate death of Al Welsh, Beatty took the place of his former instructor at College Park, Maryland, testing aircraft for the government.

The next year, Beatty shipped his Wright plane to England. The aircraft had by now been equipped with a GYRO seven-cylinder rotary motor. He formed a partnership with Handly-Page to establish a flying school at the Hendon Aerodrome, outside of London. This venture was highly successful and was to produce over one thousand fliers for the Royal Air Force. After the war, Beatty worked for a Parisian motorcycle manufacturer and remained in Europe for nineteen years.

In later life, Beatty was to return to the field of his youth, working for the Hughes Printing Company. On February 21, 1955, George W. Beatty, a member of the Early Birds and an outstanding figure in early aviation, passed away at 67.

George W. Beatty (-1955) was an Early Bird, aviator and instructor. After finishing school, Beatty became a mechanic and linotype operator. In 1909 he became interested in a New York gliding club and assisted in the construction of an unsuccessful home-built Santos-Dumont Demoiselle. In 1911 he entered the Wright Flying School and received his license in July of that year. He spent much of the remaining years before World War I carrying passengers, flying exhibitions, and instructing, both in England and the United States. In February 1914 he established a flying school at Hendon, near London, in cooperation with Handley Page and instructed military pilots during the war. Following the war he returned to the US and became superintendent of the Hughes Printing Company, where he remained until his death.

Summary:
This collection consists of 277 images taken by or acquired by Slim Lindsay during his stints as manager of the Curtiss Wright and Roosevelt Fields, and during his travels for the B.G. Corporation.
Scope and Contents:
This collection consists of 206 photographs taken or acquired by Slim Lindsay during his stints as manager of the Curtiss Wright and Roosevelt Fields and during his travels for B.G. Corporation. The photographs include aircraft, aviation personalities, air fields, and hangars from around the world. The collection also includes newspaper and magazine articles on Lindsay, his licenses and business cards, first day covers and maps of St. Louis with its airports.

Note: The digital images in this finding aid were repurposed from scans made by an outside contractor for a commercial product and may show irregular cropping and orientation in addition to color variations resulting from damage to and deterioration of the original objects.

Biographical / Historical:
Kester S. 'Slim' Lindsay (1902-1979) learned to fly in 1922 and was licensed by the State of Massachusetts in 1924. In 1928 he organized and operated the National Air Pageant Association which sponsored air shows. In September 1928 he bought a substantial interest in the New England Aircraft Co., which he sold to Curtiss Flying Service in 1929. He went to work for Curtiss as a manager of their base in Worchester, MA. He worked at various Curtiss Wright bases, including Valley Stream Field, where he was the manager of the field and the Curtiss Wright Mechanics School. In June 1932 Lindsay went to work for Roosevelt Field, Inc. as operations manager of the field, Roosevelt Flying Corp., and Roosevelt Aviation School, Inc. Lindsay later worked for the B.G. Corporation, which manufactured spark plugs. His job for B.G. Corporation included business trips around the world.

Scope and Contents:
This scrapbook was kept by Johnson's wife Florence, and is a collection of photographs and newspaper clippings outlining his career. It also contains correspondence written to Mrs. Johnson concerning her husband.
Biographical / Historical:
Walter E. Johnson was a pioneer in early aviation and a World War I aviation instructor. He was also a member of the 'Early Birds,' a group recognized as flying before December 17, 1916. His first job dealing with aviation was working for Glenn H. Curtiss as a mechanic and later flying for the Thomas Brothers Aeroplane Company.

Summary:
Victor Vernon was an aviation pioneer, flight instructor, U. S. Navy aviator, and airline executive. This collection consists of three scrapbooks that chronicle Vernon's aviation career.
Scope and Contents:
This collection consists of three scrapbooks that chronicle Victor Vernon's aviation career and include numerous photographs, with an emphasis on Curtiss flying boats, the Curtiss Model H America, the Curtiss rebuilt Langley Aerodrome, and Curtiss tractor type aircraft. Besides the photographs, the scrapbooks contain many newspaper clippings covering Vernon's involvement with Curtiss, and his association with the Oregon-Washington-Idaho Airplane Company, as well as correspondence with William (Billy) Mitchel, Glenn Curtiss, and C.R. Smith. Miscellaneous items include route charts, correspondence, and photographs relating to Colonial Airlines and American Airlines, photographs of Bert Acosta and Vernon's naval aviator certificates. There is also material relating to Vernon's hydroaeroplane.

Biographical / Historical:
Victor Vernon was an aviation pioneer who began his career on Curtiss flying boats. In 1915 Vernon went to Toronto, Canada with the Curtiss School to teach Canadian pilots. During World War I, Vernon served with the U. S. Navy as an aviator and test pilot for the Naval Aircraft Factory. From 1919-1920, Vernon was instrumental in forming the Oregon-Washington-Idaho Airplane Company. In 1930 Vernon joined Colonial Airlines, a division of American Airways. He remained with American Airlines as Personnel Director and Assistant to the President until his retirement in 1948.

Scope and Contents:
Assen Jordanoff (1896-1967) was born in Sofia, Bulgaria and first flew during the summer of 1912. He was with the 1st Air Squadron during the Balkan War 1912-1913 and he was an officer with the Bulgarian Air Force, during World War I. Jordanoff emigrated to the United States in 1921, where he held a variety of aviation-related jobs, including draftsman, engineer, and flight instructor for various aviation companies. The companies he worked for include: LWF (Lowe, Willard & Fowler Engineering Co.), Curtiss Aeroplane Company , and the Curtiss-Wright Corporation. Jordanoff was also a renowned aviation writer, and his books include Flying and How to Do It and Jordanoff's Illustrated Aviation Dictionary.

This collection consists of .5 cubic ft of archival material relating to Assen Jordanoff's aviation career, including: correspondence, articles written by Jordanoff, articles about Jordanoff, photographs, and biographical information. The material is in both English and Bulgarian.

The Bowman Family Papers contain 1.28 cubic feet of material related to the aviation careers of Leslie (Les), Marguerite (Martie), and Larnie Bowman.
Scope and Contents:
The Bowman Family Papers contain: log books, licenses, and membership cards for Marguerite, Larnie, and Leslie Bowman; loose materials including maps, newspaper clippings from the 1930s, 1972 and 1985; and miscellaneous photographs, including two of Charles Lindbergh. Three scrapbooks at the end of the collection (1923-1931, 1932-1935, 1936-1987) include photographs (some autographed), personal and business correspondence, and newspaper clippings.

Biographical / Historical:
Leslie (Les) and Marguerite (Martie) Bowman were married in October 1919 and had both learned to fly by 1925. Les, a mechanic, worked as an engineer and salesman for the Kinner Engine and Aircraft Company and was involved in both the production and testing of airplanes. Martie was a charter member of both the Ninety-Nines, a women pilots' association, and the National Air Race Association. She set women's speed records and swept three women's racing events on one day in 1938. Les and Martie both tried wing walking, as did their daughter, Larnie, at the age of eight. Larnie learned to fly by the time she was twelve. During World War II, the Bowmans ran one of five civilian schools for the training of Navy fighter pilots. Les and Martie retired from aviation after the conclusion of the war.

This collection consists of three boxes of 4' and 3' glass slides, dating from the early 1930s. The slides are probably from 1919-1932 when Copland was an instructor and lecturer for Curtiss Flying Service, Inc. There are also seven log books chronicling both Copland's civilian and military flights (1917-1942) and numerous private and commerical pilots, mechanic, and medical licenses mostly from the 1920s-1940s. Lastly, there is a small black binder full of aerial photographs and notes, relating to a number of fields that were used for World War II training. All of the fields were part of the Southeast Army Air Corps, which included a number of civilian contract schools. Included in this notebook are lists of the officers for each school. The following fields and schools are included: Riddle Aero Inst., Florida; Lodwick School of Aero, Florida; Hawthorne School of Aeronautics, South Carolina; Tuskegee Institute, Alabama; Darr Aero Tech, Georgia; Graham Aviation Company, Georgia; Embry-Riddle Company, Florida; Lodwich Aviation Military Academy, Florida; Southeastern Air Service, South Carolina; Southern Aviation School, South Carolina; Clarksdale School of Aviation, Mississippi; South Aviation Training School, Alabama; Raymond-Richardson Aviation Co, Georgia; Helena Aero Tech, Arkansas; and Greenville Aviation School, Florida.
Biographical / Historical:
Harry Depew Copland (1896-1976) was an Early Bird, soloing in a glider in 1909 and in an airplane in 1911. His many achievements include: exhibition flights, (1911); British Blockade Runners, radio officer (1915-1916); Canadian Royal Flying Corps 203rd Squadron, 1st Lieutenant and Flight Commander (1917-1919); District Manager of the New England Flying Service in charge of Curtiss Primary School Flying Operations (1929-1932). During World War II he served at Maxwell Field, AL, and as commanding officer of the 19th AAF Basic Flying Detachment at Greenville, S.C. Copland was also involved with Altantic Airways, Inc., United Air Lines, and was the Director of Florida Aviation Department.

This collection consists of mostly technical manuals and reports relating to Link Trainer models, circa 1933-1976. Also includes as part of the collection is a microfilm copy of the early Link business records, with corresponding database. Three folders of photographs regarding Link Aviation, Inc., were transferred later and added to this collection on 02/18/99.
Biographical / Historical:
Link Aviation, Inc., was a pioneer company in the field of synthetic flight training. Started by Edwin Link during the 1930s, Link Aviation, Inc., helped train over 500,000 military airman during World War II via their 'blue box trainers.' After the war, Link grew to be the largest manufacturer of electronic weapon-systems trainers and flight and space-mission simulators. During the company's existence, Link manufactured the following types of training systems: visual display systems; commercial aircraft simulators; military aircraft simulators, including the first jet trainer and the first jet bomber trainer; general aviation simulators; and space mission simulators. The Casey Jones School of Aeronautics was founded in 1932 in Newark, NJ by Charles S. "Casey" Jones, George Augustus Vaughn, Jr., and Lee D. Warrender. The school moved to New York City, adjacent to LaGuardia Airport, in 1940. After World War II, the Casey Jones School of Aeronautics was consolidated with the Academy of Aeronautics. In 1986, the Academy became the College of Aeronautics and in 2004, the name was changed to the Vaughn College of Aeronautics and Technology to honor a donor.

This collection contains material primarily relating to the Hawthorne Flying Schools. It consists of class books from the Air Force cadets that were trained at Hawthorne facilities in North and South Carolina, a scrapbook of the 1943-45 issues of Hawthorne Prop Wash, the company newsletter, and photos used in Prop Wash.
Biographical / Historical:
Beverly "Bevo" Howard (1914-1971) was an aviation promoter and aerobatic pilot. He soloed in 1931 at age 16 and, in 1932, joined Hawthorne Aviation as a line boy. By 1936 he was the President of Hawthorne and joined Eastern Air Lines (1936-38), at 21 the youngest air line pilot in the United States. In the 1940s and 1950s the Hawthorne Aviation Schools trained approximately ten thousand pilots from thirty-two countries, including military pilots from the United States, France, and Pakistan. Best known as a stunt pilot, Howard was the first to perform an outside loop in a light aircraft (1938), succeeding in a 37 1/2 horse power Piper Cub. He won the National Lightplane Aerobatic Championship for three years in a row (1939, 1940, 1941) and the International Aerobatic Championship three times (all classes 1946, 1947, 1949; second place 1948, 1950). While flying at a show in Greenville, NC, on October 17, 1971, Howard had a fatal accident.

This scrapbook consists of clippings relating to Lawrence's early years, particularly his activities in South America between 1919 and 1923. Most of the clipping are from South American newspapers and are in Spanish and Portuguese. That material in the Biographical Files consists of larger format newspaper articles and copies of several letters of recommendation.
Biographical / Historical:
Lawrence Leon (1889-1965) immigrated from his native Italy in 1913, and three years later received FAI Airplane Pilot Certificate #589 at Curtiss Field, Buffalo, NY. He served as flight instructor at the Curtiss School, Newport News, VA from Jan-Aug 1917, and as civilian instructor at various military schools until the end of World War I. In 1919 he traveled to Buenos Aries, Argentina as the representative for Curtiss Airplane Export Corporation and spent 13 years in South America as business representative and flight instructor for Curtiss. Following his return from South America, he continued with Curtiss until 1940 when he left to pursue unspecified business activities.

Biographical/Historical note:
The Moisant Family -- John, Alfred and Matilde -- helped spark America's early interest in aviation. John Moisant (1868-1910) trained at the Bleriot School in France and made the first successful cross-country, passenger-carrying flight from Paris to London in 1910. That fall he competed in the Gordon-Bennett Trophy Races but was killed in December while flying an exhibition in New Orleans, LA. His brother Alfred was president of the Moisant Aviation School and of the Hempstead Plains Aviation Company, 1911. Alfred also organized the Moisant International Aviators, Inc., which embarked upon a series of flight exhibitions in the United States and Mexico, 1911-1912. The Moisants' sister, Matilde (1887-1964), joined the family's exhibition tour and was the second American woman to become a licensed pilot. Matilde established two altitude records before giving up exhibition flying in 1912.

Biographical / Historical:
Helen Richey (1909 - 1947) was an aviation pioneer who made headlines as a stunt pilot, a racing champion, a holder of speed and altitude records, a flight instructor, an Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA) and Womens Air Service Pilot (WASP) during WWII, the first women to pilot a commercial airliner on a regular scheduled run, and as the first woman to ever fly the United States mail. In April of 1930, Richey enrolled as a student pilot at Bettis Field's Curtiss-Wright flying school and on June 28, 1930, she earned her pilot's license. In December 1930, Richey was granted a limited commercial pilot's license bythe Department of Commerce. During the 1930s, Richey set a number of records and placed in several races, including as a co-pilot to Amelia Earhart in the 1936 Bendix Race. In 1934 Richey applied for a pilot's job with Central Airlines. She was hired and flew Central's route between Washington and Detroit. However, the Bureau of Air Commerce warned Centeral management to keep her on the ground in bad weather and the pilot's union rejected her application for membership. Due to these restrictions, Richey resigned from Central in October 1935. The Bureau of Air Commerce then offered Helen a new job as an air marking pilot for the government. She stayed with the air marking service until 1937 when the job was completed. In 1940 Richey was the first woman to earn an instructor's license and she was appointed an instructor for air cadets at Pittsburgh - Butler Airport. In 1942, she joined the American wing of the British Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA), where she ferried aicraft and needed materials thoughout the British Isles. Richey headed the ATA's American Group from 1942 until April 1943, when she returned to the States and joined the WASPs. Unable to find aviation employment after the WASPs disbanded in 1944, she committed suicide in 1947.

This collection consists of 89 obsolete training and orientation films used by Northwest Airlines, Inc. and 87 obsolete technical manuals for aircraft in the Northwest fleet. The technical manuals include material on the following types of aircraft: Boeing 707, 727, 747; Douglas DC-9; and McDonnell Douglas DC-10 and MD-80.
Biographical / Historical:
Northwest Airways was incorporated on August 1, 1926 and in 1934 the name of the company was changed to Northwest Airlines. Northwest Airlines has a transcontinental domestic route system as well as having the distinction of being one of the largest American carriers to the Pacific with a strong route structure to Tokyo and other points in the Far East.

This collection consists of a scrapbook on Phillips W. Page, which contains photographs and newspaper clippings on his career in 1911-1912.
Biographical / Historical:
Phillips Ward Page (1885-1917) was an active early pilot who assisted in the tests and development of some of the early Burgess aircraft, and taught many renowned civilian and military aviators to fly. As the Aviation Editor of the Boston Herald, Page was a passenger on several flight around Boston and the vicinity in the Spring of 1911. Page joined the Wright Flying School at Dayton, Ohio in July of 1911, and obtained his pilot license on 25 October 1911. In November of that year he started carrying passengers and flying exhibitions on week ends, flying around the New York vicinity. He became a full time instructor for the Burgess Company of Marblehead, Massachusetts on Burgess-Wright planes, and for the winter aviation school at Daytona FL. Besides his teaching obligations, Page was a contestant in air meets, made test flights of new military tractors, and took the first motion pictures of Boston from the air. In 1914, Page joined the U.S. Aviation Reserves, and enlisted as a Naval Aviator in April of 1917. He was an instructor at Squantum, Massachusetts Naval Base, before being assigned to duty in France. He drowned in the English Channel in a seaplane accident on 17 December 1917.

Summary:
This collection contains two scrapbooks and the personal papers of Dr. Paul Studenski, an early aviator who flew from 1910-1913. Born in St. Petersburg, Studenski studied law and medicine before earning the 292nd license from L'Aero Club de France. He immigrated to the United States in 1911 and exercised his prodigious flying skills as instructor, test pilot and exhibition pilot before retiring from flying to distinguish himself in the fields of economics and government service.

The Paul Studenski Collection (accession 1989-0012) contains approximately one cubic foot of material relating to the aviation career of this early pilot.

Biographical/Historical note:
Paul Studenski was born November 13, 1887 and raised in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Possessed of great intellectual talent, Studenski studied law at the University of Saint Petersburg, Russia, from which he graduated in 1908. He then attended the Sorbonne in Paris for a year, where he became a medical student. Paris was then a particularly exciting place for a young man of energy and curiosity and after Louis Blériot flew the English Channel in 1909, Studenski's plans for the immediate future dramatically changed. He soon suspended his academic coursework and spent his entire inheritance in learning to fly.

Studenski enrolled at L'École Blériot in Étampes, France. He first soloed on November 8, 1910 and received the 292nd license from L'AŽro Club de France. After flying the experimental monoplane Gremaud at Pau throughout the winter of 1910-1911, he immigrated to the United States, where he showed himself to be an extremely versatile pilot, skilled with vastly dissimilar types of aircraft. After a stint of barnstorming, he accepted employment with the National Aeroplane Company, operating out of Galveston, Texas and Cicero, Illinois. For National, he served as instructor, test pilot and exhibition pilot. On March 17, 1912, he carried the first authorized mail in Texas, indeed the first air mail carrying flights in the South. In 1913, Studenski signed on with the Silver Lake Aviation Company, operating near Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio.

Later that year, Studenski acceded to his wife Ester's request and retired from aviation. Although his aviation career spanned only four years, these were marked by skill and sound judgement.

Studenski returned to academe, attending New York University between 1915 and 1917. The next year he entered Columbia University, where he received a doctorate in 1921. The following years were spent in a highly regarded career in teaching and government service. He was to serve as Professor of Economics at New York University for many years, from 1927 to 1955. He followed this with a two year tenure as Director of the Albany Graduate Program in Public Administration. Subsequently, Paul Studenski served as Professor Emeritus of Economics at New York University and devoted more of his efforts to consulting work, advising many entities, including municipal commissions, various state and city governments, federal agencies and private organizations. Both President Franklin Roosevelt and New York Governor Thomas Dewey were to thank him for his efforts. Among the many books he authored were The Income of Nations and Financial History of the United States.

Paul Studenski was the a member of several associations relating to his careers in aviation and economics, including the Early Birds of Aviation, Inc. and the Long Island Early Fliers Club.

This accomplished pilot flew, during four scant years, Curtiss, Nieuport and Farman machines, the Beech-National biplane (at the time the largest airplane in the United States) and several Blériot models, including Earle Ovington's U.S. Air Mail Carrier No. 1. Paul Studenski, a gentle and accomplished man, pioneer aviator and fiscal expert, died November 2, 1961, while browsing in a bookstore.

Biographical / Historical:
The Women Flyers of America (WFA), established in July 1940, invited any women over the age of 18 to join their organization if they were interested in flying 'for sport, profession, or national emergency.' This organization helped to guide and prepare women in the various phases of aviation, and local chapters could be found in major cities across the United States. The organization folded in 1954.

This photo album consists of about 60 photographs documenting the activities and training at Fort Omaha, Nebraska, in 1918. Included are photographs of observation balloons from the 79th Balloon Company and Major Henry Rogers, Wing Commander. There are also views from the air and on the field of balloons and men, from Brook Field, San Antonio, Texas, Truax Field, Madison, Wisconsin, and Fort Omaha, Nebraska.
Biographical / Historical:
Fort Omaha became the site of America's first military balloon school when the Fort was reactivated in 1916 as the Balloon Section of the American Expeditionary Force, known as the Fort Omaha Balloon School. Captain Chandler, pilot of the first 1909 flight, was named the Commanding Officer.
