Summary:
The Bendix Corporation (1924-1983), manufacturers of devices for the automotive and aviation industries, sponsored the Bendix Trophy Race—a transcontinental speed competition for aircraft—annually from 1931-1939, then sporadically from 1946-1962. This collection includes race-related materials from the Bendix Advertising and Publicity department, along with materials from other aviation events for which Bendix was a sponsor. Approximately a third of the collection relates to the corporation's activities from circa 1960 to 1983, including military and commercial avionics and communications systems, and support for the Unites States space program, particularly the construction of Kennedy Space Center (KSC) Launch Complex 39.
Scope and Contents:
This collection centers on the activities of the Bendix Advertising and Publicity department (later Advertising and Public Relations), for many years directed by William A. Mara (later Eldon E. Fox) and assisted by the New York public relations firm Carl Byoir and Associates, Inc. Materials include correspondence, telegrams, documents, brochures, press releases, photographs, and black and white and color negatives and transparencies. As the Bendix Trophy Races were closely associated with the National Air Races, the collection includes race programs, schedules, entry forms, and related air racing ephemera, as well as a number of photographs by Robert E. Burke and Associates, for many years the official photographer of the National Air Races in Cleveland, Ohio. Similar materials relate to the National Soaring Contest held in Elmira, New York (1935-1946), and the All Woman Transcontinental Air Race (1956-1962) for which Bendix was a sponsor, various National Aircraft Shows and National Aviation Shows, and Bendix's membership in the Aircraft Industries Association of America (AIAA). The collection also includes materials relating to the design and production of the Vincent Bendix Trophy and related replicas and engraved plaques by the Medallic Art Company (New York, NY) and plaster models and plaques by The Potter-Bentley Studios, Inc. (Cleveland, Ohio). Also included are photographs and two sets of 11 audio cassette tape recordings each of interviews made as part of the 1985 program "The Golden Years," and photographs taken at the related October 30, 1985, event at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. The later third of the collection relates to Bendix's activities circa 1960-1985, with documents and photographs relating to the construction of Kennedy Space Center (KSC) Launch Complex 39, followed by a small amount of assorted advertising ephemera for various Bendix electronic products and services.
Arrangement:
The materials are arranged in the original physical order as received from the donor, and have been grouped into four series. Folders within a series generally run in chronological order, although the last series contains an assortment of materials many of which would be more logically placed in earlier series. Folders of correspondence are generally arranged in reverse chronological order within the folder. Many of the photographs appearing in Series 2 (Bendix Trophy Races, By Year) can be found duplicated elsewhere in the collection. Boxes 6 and 7 both contain oversized materials.
Biographical / Historical:
The Bendix Corporation, founded in 1924 by inventor Victor Bendix, began as a manufacturer of devices for use in the automotive industry, initially of engine-related items such as starting motors and carburetors, but soon expanding to brakes and hydraulic systems. In 1929, renamed as Bendix Aviation, the corporation branched out into the design and manufacture of equipment for the closely related aeronautics industry, including aircraft hydraulics for brake and flap systems, aircraft engine carburetors, and various electric and electronic instruments. In 1931, Bendix decided to sponsor the first Bendix Trophy Race—a transcontinental speed competition open to all comers, male or female—"to encourage experimental developments by airplane designers and to improve the skills of aviators in cross-country flying techniques such as weather plotting, high altitude and instrument flight." The Bendix Trophy Races were held in conjunction with the National Air Races, occurring with great fanfare annually from 1931-1939, but were suspended from 1940-1945 during World War II. In 1946, the races resumed, but now had to contend with the invention of the jet engine—accordingly, the Bendix Trophy Race was split into two categories: the "R" Division for reciprocating engine airplanes, and the "J" Division for U.S. military jet airplanes. Interest in air racing had declined in the post-war period, and no race was run in 1950. In 1951 the races resumed, and from this point on were limited to U.S. military jets only. Subsequent Bendix Trophy Races occurred in 1953-1957, and then (after a three-year gap) in 1961, with the last race held in 1962.

By this point in time, the Bendix Corporation—which had branched out to dominate the US market in aircraft radio and radar equipment during World War II—was producing missile and radar systems for the US military. In the 1960s Bendix was also building ground and airbourne telecommunications and telemetry systems for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). The Bendix Field Engineering division worked on the construction of Kennedy Space Center (KSC) Launch Complex 39 at the Merritt Island Launch Area (MILA) adjacent to Cape Canaveral, Florida, including the Apollo Launch Control Center, Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB), and operational support equipment. In the 1970s, Bendix and its numerous Divisions were involved in a series of mergers, sales, and other changes involving the Raytheon and Allied (later Allied-Signal Aerospace) corporations, followed by a hostile takeover attempt in 1982 by Martin Marietta. In 1983, Bendix was acquired by Allied-Signal Aerospace (later Honeywell International) which retained the avionics part of the business.

The original Vincent Bendix Trophy was donated to the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in 1985 [artifact number A19850368000]. On October 30, 1985, an event sponsored by Bendix/Allied-Signal was held at the museum in Washington, D.C., honoring aviators involved in the Bendix Trophy Races. Titled "The Golden Years," the program included interviews with several winners of the Bendix Trophy.

Summary:
This collection consists of correspondence, newspaper clippings, photographs, and motion picture film documenting the Seypelt-Kern flight. The material also includes Seypelt's aviation licenses and certificates, as well as photographs documenting his enlistment in the German army during World War I. The collection also contains material on the first westward transatlantic flight (1928), from Ireland to Labrador by 'Bremen', a Junkers W-33 monoplane piloted by Hermann Koehl, Baron Guenther von Huenefeld, and James Fitzmaurice. The collection also contains one 16mm film on the flight of the "Yankee Doodle."

Biographical / Historical:
On October 21, 1927, Albert Willibald Seypelt (d.1966) and George William Kern began a tour of Europe in a lightweight Klemm-Daimler L-20 dubbed the 'Yankee Doodle.' Leaving from Stuttgart, Germany, the duo travelled over 6,000 miles visiting Belgium, France, Italy and Austria before returing to Stuttgart on January 20, 1928.

Summary:
This collection consists of original papers documenting Captain Walter Seaborn's World War I service, especially his duties relating to the Army Air Service's evaluation, procurement, and transfer of German aircraft and equipment to the United States after the war. The following types of material are included in the collection: correspondence, memorandums, reports, photographs, passenger lists, resumes, supply receipts, rosters, notes, publications, and military orders. There is also a photocopy of letters, photographs, and documents, bound in a book entitled "The Seaborn Family 1882-1972." This book contains information about Captain Seaborn and his family.

Biographical / Historical:
Captain Walter J. Seaborn (1892-19??) attended high school and the Western Military Academy in Illinois. He attended several different business schools before graduating from the University of California with a law degree in 1912. In 1917, after having held a variety of jobs and traveling, Seaborn joined the Army Air Service and was assigned to Kelly Field. He was promoted to Commanding Officer of the 25th Aero Squadron and ordered overseas, to England and then to France. In France, Seaborn worked as the Liaison Officer between the Technical Section SOS and the Zone of Advance. In 1918, Seaborn was promoted to captain and after the war he transferred to the 3rd Army where his duty was to secure types of all available German aircraft for shipment to the United States for further evaluation.

Summary:
J. Heron Crosman, III was an aviator who was awarded the Henry L. Doherty Trophy in 1933. This collection consists of a scrapbook kept by Crosman that documents his winning of the Doherty Trophy as well as his other experiences in aviation.
Scope and Contents:
This collection consists of a leather-bound scrapbook (9.5 x 6.25 inches, 62 filled pages) kept by J. Heron Crosman, III. The scrapbook contains newspaper clippings and photographs relating to Crosman and his family, clippings relating to Crosman's win of the Doherty Trophy, congratulatory telegrams received on the occasion of this win, correspondence, and other mementos. There are also two letters tucked inside to Crosman's daughter, Elizabeth "Trophy" Frederick, from a Waco enthusiast.

Biographical / Historical:
J. Heron Crosman, III was born in 1904 in Pennsylvania, part of a socially prominent family. Crosman graduated from Princeton University in 1928. Crosman learned to fly in 1929 and purchased a de Havilland D.H.60 Moth (tail number NC139M), The Mothball, that year. In 1933, Crosman was awarded the Henry L. Doherty Trophy and a prize purse of $1,000 for winning the leg from Daytona Beach to Miami, Florida of the US Amateur Air Pilots' Association East Coast Cruise from Long Island, New York to Miami. The entire event included several different elements such as aerial treasure hunts and time and distance competition. The East Coast Cruise was one of many aerial competitions created to encourage aviation development in the United States during the 1920s and 1930s. Crosman competed against more than 50 flyers and won with a time of 2 hours and 14 minutes. Crosman later purchased and flew a specially designed Waco F-3 (tail number NC86Y), The Heart-throb.

Biographical / Historical:
Weldon B. Cooke (1884-1914) was a flying pioneer involved in aviation as a pilot, mechanic, and builder. Cooke graduated from the California School of Mechanical Arts and the College of Electrical Engineering, University of California. In 1910, he built a Montgomery-type glider, and during the summer of 1911 he taught himself to fly in a Curtiss-type biplane: the Diamond. In this aircraft, Cooke became involved with exhibition flying and participated in several air meets, including the 1912 Los Angeles meet. Cooke soon become involved in building aircraft, beginning with his rework of an aircraft which had been built by Ben Noonan, Don Prentiss, and Fred Wiseman: the "Wiseman-Cooke." In this aircraft, Cooke participated in exhibition flying and carried the first official mail at Eureka, CA in 1912. Late in 1912, he left the exhibition flying business to form the Weldon B. Cooke Aeroplane Company in Sandusky, Ohio, where he built a Tractor Biplane Flying Boat. He left Ohio to assist with the operation of the Benoist Company's early St. Petersburg-Tampa passenger air-boat line. He returned to his Sandusky company in 1914, but the company soon became bankrupt. Cooke then returned to California, where he become involved with Silas Christofferson's airline between Oakland and San Francisco, piloting the Christofferson Flying Boat, Aeromaid. Following his time with Christofferson, Cooke returned to exhibition flying, and died in 1914 during an exhibition flight held at the Pueblo Colorado Fair Grounds.

This collection consists of eight black and white photographs taken in Hawaii in the late 1930s relating to Amelia Mary Earhart and Pan American Airways (Pan Am) aircraft.
Scope and Contents:
This collection consists of eight black and white photographs taken in Hawaii in the late 1930s. The photographs range in size from approximately 2.5 by 3.5 inches up to approximately 5 by 7 inches. Some may have been taken by Walton Alexander Anderson, others appear to be press or promotional photography. Four photographs relate to Amelia Mary Earhart's first unsuccessful round-the-world flight attempt in March 1937. Two photos show Earhart, Paul Mantz, and Fred Noonan wearing leis and speaking to the press. Two photographs show Earhart's Lockheed Model 10-E Electra (NR16020) undergoing repairs at Luke Field on Ford Island, Oahu, Hawaii. The collection also contains four photographs relating to Pan American Airways (Pan Am) aircraft in Hawaii, at least some of which were also possibly taken on Ford Island. Aircraft shown in these photographs include the Sikorsky S-42 Clipper (NR-823M), Martin (Glenn L.) Model 130 Philippine Clipper (NC-14715), and Martin (Glenn L.) Model 130 China Clipper (NC-14716).

Biographical / Historical:
Seaboard & Western Airlines was founded by Arthur and Raymond Norden. These brothers were both World War II veterans of the Army's Air Transport Command. Over a 33 year period the airline these men helped create established itself as the preeminent carrier of cargo on the world's richest trade routes. This airline was the first to fly an all-cargo flight across the Atlantic, the first to land and takeoff at Idlewild (now John F. On April 4th, 1961 the company's name changed to Seaboard World Airlines after Richard M. Jackson was brought in as the new Chairman and President. On October 1, 1980 Seaboard World Airlines was absorbed by The Flying Tiger Line, Inc., and on December 16, 1988 The Flying Tiger Line, Inc., was absorbed by the Federal Express Corporation.

Biographical / Historical:
Clifford W. Henderson (1895 -1984) was an aviation promoter and showman who managed the annual National Air Races from 1928 until 1939, bringing attention to the expanding field of sport aviation. Born in Iowa, Henderson graduated from the University of Southern California in 1917 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He served in the 35th Ambulance Unit, France, during World War I, before transferring to the 101st Aero Squadron where he learned to fly. After the war, Henderson returned to California and was chairman of ground arrangements for the departure and return of the Army's Around the World Flight in 1924 from Clover Field. In 1928 he became Director of Aviation of Los Angeles and served as the first manager of the Los Angeles airport system. Also in 1928 Henderson became director of the National Air Races and was responsible for interesting industry leaders in competition trophies, including the Thompson, Bendix and Grieve Trophies. He retired from managing the National Air Races in 1939. Henderson served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, rising to the rank of colonel. He played an instrumental role in planning the Burma Hump air route, and also served as military governor of Dakar in North Africa. After the war, Henderson was suffering from illness and injuries sustained in Africa, and so went to recuperate in California where he founded Palm Desert, California. He remained active in the Palm Desert community until his death in 1984.

The collection consisted of miscellaneous material, including annual reports for all companies that eventually came under Republic Airlines: route maps, photographs of various aircraft used, and publicity stickers, stamps, and notices. Press releases and newsletters are held for some of the companies. Much of the collection of press releases, progress reports, and information packets centers on the Boeing 727 series, the Boeing 747SP series, and the McDonnell Douglas DC-9 series. This collection also includes Bonanza Air Lines negatives.

Biographical / Historical:
This collection consist of various materials belonging to a group of airlines that eventually came under Republic Airlines. The product of mergers, this airline found its start in the small, postwar feeder airlines of the Mid- and Southwest. The nine small companies that became Republic include: West Coast Airlines, Wisconsin Central Airlines, North Central Airlines, Southwest Airways, Southern Airways, Bonanza Air Lines, Pacific Air Lines, Air West, and finally, Hughes Air West.

This collection consists of approximately 0.18 cubic feet of black and white photographs pertaining to Mathias Peter Kashuba's service at the Second Air Instructional Center (2d AIC) in Tours, France, during World War I. There is one set of captioned photographs which measure approximately 12 x 9 inches each that shows many aspects of life at Tours Aerodrome and which was likely put together by the Aerial Photography School there. These photographs show personnel, facilities, and operations on base. There are additional photographs of various sizes in the collection, many of which were possibly taken by Kashuba or his colleagues and others that are of the type generally collected by those who served in World War I. These photographs include aerial views of various areas of France, views of local citizens and notable locations, views of areas damaged by bombing, personnel, equipment, and aircraft including the SPAD XIII (S.13) and Sopwith Camel.

Biographical / Historical:
Mathias Peter Kashuba enlisted in the U. S. Army Air Service in December 1917. He served with the 4th Company, 2nd Regiment at the Second Air Instructional Center (2d AIC) at Tours Aerodrome, France, and was likely connected to the Aerial Photography School there. Kashuba was honorably discharged at the rank of corporal in June 1919.

Arthur Nutt was an aeronautical engineer specializing in engine design.
Scope and Content Note:
This collection consists of the personal papers of Dr. Arthur Nutt. These papers relate to his career as an aeronautical engineer with the Curtiss Aeroplane and Motor Company, Wright Aeronautical Corporation, Packard Motor Car Company, Arthur Nutt and Associates, and the Lycoming division of AVCO Manufacturing Corporation. The material include correspondence, photographs, reports, manuals, handbooks, test data, brochures, speeches, and scrapbooks. Included are biographical and autobiographical materials (notes, news clippings, articles, and photographs) compiled by Nutt in an unsuccessful attempt to publish his autobiography. Two smaller collections of Dr. Nutt's papers, NASM.1988.0055 and NASM.1988.0059, have been integrated into the main collection.

Arrangement note:
The collection is arranged into two broad series. First, is the material pertaining to his professional life. This includes Nutt's correspondence, official reports, photographs (mainly of aircraft engines and aircraft), corporate publications (brochures, handbooks, instruction books, manuals, and parts lists), aircraft engine blueprints, aircraft engine proposals, test data, speeches, magazines, and newsletters. The second series contains papers gathered mainly for Nutt's personal use and interest. Of special interest are Nutt's logbook, scrapbooks, and notes for his autobiography.

Nutt's papers are arranged both alphabetically by manufacturer and then chronologically. Correspondence, photographs, reports, speeches, and notes (except miscellaneous biographical notes without dates) are organized by the latter method. Corporate brochures, handbooks, instruction books, manuals, blueprints and test data are grouped alphabetically by corporate name, then by date (and by aircraft engine type when applicable). Magazines, newsletters, and newspapers are also arranged alphabetically by title of publication and then chronologically.
Historical note:
Arthur Nutt was an aeronautical engineer specializing in engine design. Born in New Rochelle, New York in 1895, Nutt graduated from the Worcester Polytechnic Institute in 1916 with a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering and received an honorary doctorate from the Institute in 1941. Shortly after graduation, he was hired by the Curtiss Aeroplane and Motor Corporation (CAMCo) and started in the assembly department. As a motor engineer and eventually, chief motor engineer, Nutt was responsible for the development of the Curtiss D-12, V-1400, and R-1454 aircraft engines. After the merger of CAMCo and the Wright Aeronautical Corporation in 1930, Nutt went to work for Curtiss-Wright as vice president of engineering. He remained there for fourteen years until 1944 when he left to become director of aircraft engineering for the Packard Motor Car Company. He stayed with Packard until 1949 when he started and headed his own engineering sales firm, Arthur Nutt and Associates. In 1951 he joined the Lycoming Division of AVCO Manufacturing Corporation as vice president of engineering. Upon his retirement from Lycoming in 1959, Nutt stayed active in numerous civic and church activities. He was also a member of a number of professional organizations, most notably the Society of Automotive Engineers and served as its president in 1940. Nutt was inducted into the Aviation Pioneers Hall of Fame in 1978. He died in Boca Raton, Florida in 1983.

Biographical / Historical:
Cecil (Teddy) Kenyon (1905-1985) was taught to fly by her husband, Ted Kenyon, a pilot for Colonial Airlines, in 1929. Teddy received her pilot license after 10 hours of instruction. After receiving her license, Teddy became a charter member of the "99s" and in 1933 she won the National Sportswomen Flying Championship at Roosevelt Field, New York. During the late 1930s Teddy flew for the Civil Air Patrol, and became a test pilot for Grumman during World War II. In her position at Grumman she had opportunity to fly the following types of Grumman aircraft as they came off the production line: F4F Wildcats; F6F Hellcats; and TBF Avengers. Teddy received her helicopter license in 1960 and remained an active pilot well into her seventies.

Included in this collection are: eight black and white 8 by 10 inch photographs relating to Barney Zimmerley's aviation career; printouts of digital images taken from a scrapbook on early aviation; certificate of appreciation from Braniff Airways, Inc.; article series on the "The Nicholas-Beazley Airplane Company: The Garage that Grew Wings!" by Jack Kennedy, originally published in the American Aviation Historical Society Journal; compilation of "Parts & Crafts: Aeronautical Briefings 1917-1931, Nicholas Beazley;" National Air Pilots Association membership card; 1931 National Air Races Contesting Pilot pass; 1932 Omaha Air Races and National Balloon Races Guest pass; videotape entitled "Central Missouri Focus #203;" roster for event number 33 in the 1930 National Air Races official bulletin, The Power Dive; 11 by 17 inch illustration relating to the OX-5 engine, published by the OX-5 Club of America; and three annotated strip maps. Also included is a CD about D. S. "Barney" Zimmerley and his aviation career.
In October 2006, the Archives received a 20 by 18 inch scrapbook chronicling Zimmerley's aviation career, which included the following types of material: newspaper articles; NAA Certificates; an Aero Club of Washington Ball invitation; a short snorter; barograph records; a Link Trainer Certificate; passport and other official documentation; and correspondence. Also donated at this time were the following: photographs; newspaper and periodical articles;a Marshall Flying School Brochure; an Airways Map; 1930 National Races material; and one eleven by seven inch photo album containing black and white vintage prints of Curtiss aircraft and personalities and images of Zimmerley, his aircraft, and his family and friends.

Biographical / Historical:
Dwight S. "Barney" Zimmerley (1898?-1994) achieved success in a wide assortment of endeavors during his pioneering aviation career. Zimmerley was taught to fly by Tony Jannus in 1914, and served in the 24th Aero Squadron at Kelly Field, Texas, during World War I. After the war, Zimmerley began barnstorming, and then became a test pilot for the Nicholas-Beazley Co., and in the Nicholas-Beazley Barling NB-3 he set an altitude and a distance record for the light plane class in 1929. Zimmerley flew as a commercial airline pilot for Braniff Airways, Inc., and later became a charter pilot. He flew everything from Stearmans to Douglas DC-7s and was a member of the Quiet Birdman and the OX-5 Club of America.

This collection consists of one cubic foot of research material gathered by Eileen Lebow to write Cal Rodgers and the Vin Fiz: The First Transcontinental Flight. The following types of material are included, which trace Rodgers' flight: copy photographs; vintage prints and postcards; copies of newspaper articles; and brochures.

This collection consists of one cubic foot of research material collected by Eileen Lebow for her book Cal Rodgers and the Vin Fiz: The First Transcontinental Flight. Included in this collection are the following materials: copy photographs, vintage prints and postcards, copies of newspaper articles, and brochures. Ms. Lebow's original order, which appears to be chronological, was primarily maintained; however, some folders were combined to encompass a broader topic (i.e. folders about individual family members were combined into "Rodgers Family Background" folder.)
Arrangement note:
The collection is organized based on Ms. Lebow's original order. Box one consists primarily of photocopies of original source material (newspapers, correspondence), Ms. Lebow's correspondence, her notes, and brochures collected. Box two consists primarily of photocopies of news clippings from local papers following the flight of the Vin Fiz. Box three holds a variety of items, including photocopies of news clippings, published material on the Vin Fiz, photographs (both vintage and copy prints), notes and memorabilia. The material ranges in date from 1910 to 1997.
Biographical/Historical note:
The first crossing of the United States by airplane was achieved by Calbraith Perry Rodgers in 1911 in his Wright EX biplane, named the Vin Fiz. Rodgers decided to attempt the coast-to-coast flight in response to publisher William Randolph Hearst's challenge which offered a prize of $50,000 for the first transcontinental flight completed in 30 days. To finance the trip, Rodgers secured backing from the Armour Company, a Chicago firm that was introducing a new grape-flavored soft drink called Vin Fiz. Rodgers began his journey from Sheepshead Bay, New York, on September 17, 1911, but due to numerous stops, delays, and accidents, the 30-day time limit had expired before Rodgers reached California on November 5, 1911. Author Eileen F. Lebow wrote a book about Cal Rodgers' famous flight entitled, Cal Rodgers and the Vin Fiz: The First Transcontinental Flight. The book was published by the Smithsonian Institution Press in 1989.

Robert "Chuck" Amrein served as an aircraft mechanic with the 1503rd Army Air Force Base Unit at Hickam Field, Hawaii during World War II. This collection consists of materials relating to Amrein's service with the US Army Air Force including photographs; news clippings; and military records.
Scope and Contents:
This collection consists of materials relating to Robert "Chuck" Amrein's service with the US Army Air Force during World War II including photographs; news clippings; and military records. There are 40 black and white photographs and picture post cards of various sizes in the collection which include images of various places in Hawaii; scenes of life and personnel at Hickam Field, Hawaii; USO performers including Kay Kyser, Diana Lewis, and Joe E. Brown; aircraft including the Consolidated B-24 Liberator, Boeing Model B-314 Clipper (USN), and Douglas R3D-2; Boeing B-29 Superfortress aircraft including Enola Gay and Bockscar; and photographs of Amrein, including one taken with his wife, Jessie Amrein (née Van Liew). There are also several photographs which are close-up views of the nose art on various aircraft including Lady from Hades; Sweet Routine; Form 1-A; Million $ Baby; Texas Kate; Mickie's Menace; Mabel's Labels; Island Girl; and Tricky Micky. The collection also includes photographs and news clippings about Gertie, a Himalayan sloth bear who was flown in a Boeing B-29 Superfortress as a mascot for missions over the Hump. Also in the collection are some of Amrein's military records including a plane pass; motor vehicle operator's permit; an off-base pass; and a US Army Air Force Introduction Card. Finally, the collection contains a flocked V-J Day card which reads, "Victory Greetings from Hawaii" that was sent by Amrein to his wife in 1945, and the fall 1992 issue of Rolling Together, the newsletter of the 4th Armored Division Association which includes Amrein's obituary.

This collection consists of 57 original photographs. They comprise some of the most detailed views of Curtiss JN-4's built under contract. Also included are rare photographs of the company's factory and a Liberty Bond drive parade.
Biographical / Historical:
In an effort to assist the war in 1917, J. G. White and Company of New York established the Springfield Aircraft Corporation, in Springfield, Massachusetts. Through the persistence of the corporation's vice-president and general manager, Willis M. Rose, and K. D. Owen, production manager, the corporation was awarded a contract to build more than 500 Curtiss JN-4D training aircraft.

This collection contains material by or about Maxim. The bulk of the collection consists of published works, but does include an unpublished paper about Maxim's aeronautical experiments and a collection of newclippings regarding Maxim's life. This accession includes the following five books: Li Hung Chang's Scrapbook by Sir Maxim, 1913; The Life and Work of Sir Hiram Maxim: Knight, Chevalier de la Legion D'Honneur, by P. Fleury Mottelay, 1920; A Genius in the Family: Sir Hiram Stevens Maxim through a small Son's Eyes, by Hiram P. Maxim, 1936; My Life: Sir Hiram S. Maxim, by Sir Maxim, 1915; and A New System for Preventing Collisions at Sea, by Sir Maxim, 1912. This collection also includes two binders of material: 'Sir Hiram Stevens Maxim, February 5, 1840 - November 25, 1916. Chevalier de Legion d' Honneur Photos, Press Notices, Etc.' and 'Sir Hiram Maxim's Airplane about 1890' which includes a description and photographs of the steam powered heavier than air flying machine designed and built in 1890 in England by Sir Maxim.
Biographical / Historical:
Sir Hiram Maxim (1840-1916) was an engineer and inventor. In 1878, while serving as Chief Engineer of the United States Electric Lighting Company, he contested and lost a priority battle with Thomas Edison over the invention of the electric light. He then turned to Mechanical Engineering and invented the first efficient machine gun. The United States government was not interested in the gun, so Maxim traveled to England in 1881 and established the Maxim Gun Company. The company merged with Nordenfeldt Company (1888) and Vickers Company, which eventually formed Vickers Sons and Maxim (1896). The British War Office adopted the gun and Maxim became a British citizen (1901). In 1901 Queen Victoria knighted Maxim. Maxim experimented in aeronautics during the thirty years before his death including and wrote a number of books and articles on the subject, including 'Artificial and Natural Flight' in 1908. Maxim also built a steam-powered aircraft, the Maxim (H.S.) Flying Machine, in 1894.

John Matthew Miller III (born June 3, 1896) was active in aviation throughout his life, as a naval aviator, air mail pilot, transport pilot, autogiro pilot, flight instructor, aircraft manufacturer, airport operator, agricultural pilot, and helicopter test pilot, working at different times for the United States Navy, the U.S. Aerial Mail Service, Pitcairn Aeronautical Corporation, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture; from 1927-1929 Miller operated his own business, the Miller Aviation Corporation of New Brunswick, New Jersey. The collection includes Miller's pilot licenses and log books, scrapbooks, photographs, newspaper clippings and assorted ephemera, predominantly from the 1914 to 1939 period of Miller's life.
Scope and Contents:
This collection contains both original materials and photocopies of materials loaned by the donor for copying. Original materials include Miller's United States Navy Naval Aviator Certificate, an aircraft log book for the Curtiss Seagull "Jacques Cartier" (owned by The Chicago Tribune), a photo album entitled "The Miller Corporation, New Brunswick Airport" featuring images of the Miller (Corp) MCA-1 Amphibian Biplane, assorted loose photographs, correspondence from Robert Woods Johnson (of Johnson & Johnson), two panoramic group photographs of the US Navy Flight A Naval Aviation detachment at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1917, newspaper clippings (several covering James G. Ray's autogiro flight over Washington, DC in 1934), assorted ephemera relating to Miller's aviation career, and two bound books: Flying Officers of the U.S.N. (US Navy): 1917-1919 and Saga of the US Air Mail Service: 1918-1927, (Air Mail Pioneers, Inc., 1962). Photocopied materials include two of Miller's pilot log books, two of Miller's pilot licenses, a scrapbook, and selected pages from additional scrapbooks from which individual photographs were copied by the National Air and Space Museum in 2001. The collection also includes Smithsonian Institution numbered copy prints of these selected photographs.

Biographical / Historical:
John Matthew Miller III was born June 3, 1896, at Tacoma, Washington. As a teenager, Miller came east to study at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and found summer employment with the Burgess Company aircraft manufacturers at Marblehead, Massachusetts. In 1917, following the entry of the United States into World War I, Miller was accepted into the Massachusetts School for Naval Air Service (Flight A Naval Aviation detachment at MIT), and, after two months, moved on to elementary flying instruction at Hampton Roads, Virginia, and then advanced instruction at Pensacola, Florida. He was commissioned into the United States Naval Air Service as an Ensign on March 16, 1918, and stationed at Naval Air Station Rockaway Beach, New York, where he performed patrol and convoy work off New York harbor, until ordered to inactive duty on December 15, 1918. Miller promptly joined the US Aerial Mail Service; after training in Dayton Wright DH-4 air mailplanes at Belmont Park, Long Island, Miller was posted to Bustleton, Pennsylvania, as station manager. Following his two years of air mail service, Miller worked at a number of aviation jobs, including time with the America Trans Oceanic Company (Miami, Florida, 1920), survey flights in Quebec (Canada, 1922), and managing operations for Pitcairn Aeronautical Corporation at their base adjacent to Hadley Field in South Plainfield, New Jersey (the New York terminal for the New York to Chicago and New York to Atlanta air mail routes). Miller was an active member of the New Brunswick (NJ) Aero Club, owners of a Pitcairn PA-3 Orowing based at Pitcairn's field. On August 1, 1927, Miller organized the Miller Aviation Corporation, operating out of New Brunswick Airport (a.k.a. "Miller Field"), a short-lived airfield located southwest of the city of New Brunswick. Miller Aviation offered flying instruction, local sightseeing flights, and charter passenger flights in the mid-Atlantic seaboard region. In 1928-1929, the Miller Aviation Corporation designed, constructed, and tested the Miller (Corp) MCA-1 Amphibian Biplane; sadly, the aircraft crashed during its first ground landing. After his company failed, Miller returned to Pitcairn Aeronautical as an autogiro pilot, making a number of flights through the 1930s for Pitcairn, the US Department of Agriculture, and others. During World War II, Miller temporarily rejoined the Navy as a Lieutenant Commander, serving as a helicopter test pilot at Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Maryland. Miller later worked for the Department of Agriculture until his retirement in 1956.

NOTE: John Matthew Miller III (born 1896, died circa 1980s), the subject of this collection, should not be confused with fellow air mail and autogiro pilot John McDonald "Johnny" Miller (1905-2008), occasionally referenced in this collection. Johnny Miller was more closely associated with the Kellett Autogiro Corp (Philadelphia, PA), and was famous for being the first to land an aircraft on the roof of a building.

This accession includes Taylor's correspondence with his son, Rueben W. Taylor, (1928-1948), and the Garrison Machine Works, (1953-1956), makers of gears used in the Wright flyer engines. The letters to Rueben Taylor are originals, while the Garrison Machine Works correspondence are mostly xerox copies. Also included are brief biographical sketches of Taylor.
Biographical / Historical:
Charles Edward Taylor (1868-1956), sometimes referred to as 'the first airplane mechanic,' worked intermittently from 1901 to 1920 for Orville and Wilbur Wright and the Wright-Martin Company. Born in Nebraska in 1868, Taylor built the first engine that powered an airplane in flight, a little four-cylnder, gasoline engine which was used in the Wright 1903 Flyer at Kitty Hawk on December 17, 1903.
