Scope and Contents:
This collection consists of 37 glass negatives, 22 glass lantern slides, and 4 transparencies depicting the life and career of Stevens, circa 1900-1915. There are also corresponding negatives and contact prints for these 63 images.
Biographical / Historical:
Albert Leo Stevens (1873-1944) was an accomplished balloonist and aviation pioneer. Stevens began making ascensions when he was twelve and began manufacturing balloons and dirigibles at the age of 20. Stevens was an exhibitor in parachute, balloon, dirigible, and human cannonball shows and also was a participant in races such as the Gordon Bennett Balloon Races. Stevens flew one of the very first successful dirigibles in the United States in 1906 and opened the first private airfield in the nation in 1909. In the latter part of his career, Stevens became a flight promoter and worked with such pioneering aviators as Harry Atwood, Harry Bingham Brown, George Beatty, and Harriet Quimby. Stevens also played a key role in the development of safety features for parachutes.

Scope and Contents:
This collection consists of 38 cases of glass slides taken by Edgar Mix. The slides reflect aeronautical themes, both lighter- and heavier-than-air subjects from the early 1900s. Subjects photographed by Mix include the Grand Semaine d'Aviation de la Champagne (Reims, France), Camp d'Auvours and various aeronautical events taking place in the vicinity of Paris during 1910 and 1911. Also included are images of Mix himself and what appear to be images of his family.
Biographical / Historical:
Edgar W. Mix [1866-1911] was an internationally renowned early balloonist and the second American to win the Gordon Bennett Balloon Race. This he accomplished on October 6, 1909, flying from Zurich, Switzerland to land near Warsaw, Poland.

This collection consists of approximately 1.38 cubic feet of material relating to Nicholas John "Nick" Piantanida and Project Strato-Jump including correspondence; news clippings; photographs; motion picture film; video recordings; biographical information; flight reports; check lists; financial records; legal documents and contracts; technical information about Project Strato-Jump; information about Piantanida's David Clark pressure suit; and records pertaining to both the book Magnificent Failure: Free Fall from the Edge of Space (2003) by Craig Ryan and the ESPN film "Angry Sky" (2015) directed by Jeff Tremaine. Motion picture and video formats include 16mm film and VHS. Photographic formats include color and black and white prints of various sizes, the largest of which is 8 by 10 inches.
Biographical / Historical:
Nicholas John "Nick" Piantanida (1932-1966) was a truck driver, athlete, and sky diver who aspired to set a new world altitude record for balloons and to establish a new mark for the highest parachute jump. Piantanida and a backer established S.P.A.C.E. (Survival Programs Above a Common Environment), Inc. to handle the finances of the Strato-Jump program conceived by Piantanida. Piantanida made his first attempt in October 1965. Wind sheared the top off of his helium-filled polyethylene balloon at just 22,700 feet, but he was able to make a safe parachute landing. Raven Industries built the gondola and the balloons for the next two attempts. Paul Edward Yost, one of the founders of the company and the acknowledged father of the modern hot air balloon, would manage flight operations. In February 1966, Piantanida made Strato-Jump II and reached a world altitude of 123,500; however a flight mishap made the flight unqualified for a record. Piantanida had to disconnect his oxygen supply to make the jump and his ground controllers had no choice but to cut the gondola loose from the balloon, allowing Piantanida to return safely to earth still seated in the gondola, dangling beneath a large parachute. Strato-Jump III was at 57,600 feet when ground controllers heard a sudden hissing sound and Piantanida started to say, "Emergency." Yost immediately ordered the gondola cut loose once again. It took twenty-six minutes to parachute back to earth, landing in a field near Worthington, MN, a little more than sixty miles from the take-off point. When the chase crew, who had been following the flight in a light plane, landed near the gondola, they found the pilot alive but unconscious. While the cause of the accident has never been completely resolved, Piantanida apparently depressurized his helmet accidentally and fell unconscious from hypoxia. He died on August 29, 1966, without regaining consciousness. Project Strato-Jump was documented in the book Magnificent Failure: Free Fall from the Edge of Space (2003) by Craig Ryan, and ESPN made a film about Nick Piantanida entitled "Angry Sky" (2015) directed by Jeff Tremaine.

This collection consists of approximately 23 cubic feet of material relating to Vera Simons' ballooning and art careers. Types of materials include: newspaper articles, flight covers, photographs, slides, audio recordings, and reports relating to Simons' time with Winzen Research, inc. and her "Da Vinci" and "Aerolus" projects.
Biographical / Historical:
Vera Simons (1920-2012) played an important role in balloon development and exploration. Born in Germany, she grew up in Detroit, Michigan and married Otto Winzen; together they created Winzen Research Inc., one of world's first plastic balloon companies. Simons held over two-thirds ownership of the company and became its vice president. She supervised and trained her "balloon girls" to handle polyethylene and build the giant balloons, and obtained four patents for her work improving construction techniques and envelope redesign. During the 1950s and 1960s, Winzen created balloons for the United States Navy Projects Helios, Skyhook and Strato-Lab and for the United Sates Air Force Project Manhigh, and Simons was a central figure in planning and executing those manned research flights. Simons earned her gas balloon license in 1957 and she represented the United States at the 30th Annual International Gas Balloon Races in Holland where she received a gold medal for her contributions to balloon research. When Simons divorced Otto Winzen, she sold her interest in Winzen Research and enrolled in art school. By the early 1970s she had made a name for herself in international art circles by combining art and ballooning. In 1972, Simons began planning a series of balloon flights called "DaVinci" that combined science with original kinetic art. She spent two years designing and supervising the construction of a two-decker fiberglass gondola and an 11 story tall polyethylene balloon in which she eventually set a new overland distance record in the U.S. in 1979. During the same flight, Simons dropped tiny tetrahedron balloons carrying Douglas Fir seedlings into cleared areas, took time-lapse photographs, made sound recordings, and used mirrors to create special lighting effects in the clouds for the spectators on the ground. During other "DaVinci" flights, Simons collected temperature and airflow data, and tracked the mix and movement of urban air pollutants, while also photographing landscape and cloud images that she later used in producing works of art. In 1984 Simons launched another flight, "Project Aerolus," in which three plastic balloons were launched simultaneously into the nighttime sky; one of the balloons was piloted by Joe Kittinger.

This collection consists of two letters from Henry Allen Hazen to Alfred Edward Moore as well as two news clippings.
Scope and Contents:
This collection consists of two letters from Henry Allen Hazen to Alfred Edward Moore. The first, dated May 19, 1887, discusses their upcoming flight in the World balloon including an interview Hazen had with a reporter about the flight and about necessary provisions. The second letter, dated June 28, 1887, includes observations from that same flight as well as notes about the scientific data they obtained and the post-flight coverage in the press. The collection also includes a copy of an article by Edward Duffy about the World balloon flight entitled "Three Miles High in a Balloon," dated December 1887; and the September 1886 issue of The Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine, which includes an article by Moore and one by John G. Doughty about earlier balloon flights.

Biographical / Historical:
Alfred Edward "Fred" Moore (1858-1890) was a balloonist who made several ascents in and around Winsted, Connecticut. In June 1887, Moore ascended from St. Louis, Missouri in a balloon that was financed by the New York World and the St. Louis Post-Dispatch on an expedition that included Henry Allen Hazen, a meterologist with the U. S. Signal Service Weather Bureau, photographer John G. Doughty, and Edward Duffy, correspondent. Though widely reported to have reached an altitude of 16,000 feet, the flight was cut short due to a hand injury sustained by Moore upon take-off as well as mechanical difficulties.

This quarter-plate ambrotype made by an unknown photographer, shows the balloon ascension by John Steiner at Erie, Pennsylvania, on June 18, 1857. The scene pictured is the first attempt to fly to Canada across Lake Erie. This ambrotype, which shows men ringing the balloon as it is inflated outdoors, is thought to be the earliest dated photographic image of a balloon ascension in the United States.

Biographical / Historical:
Professor John H. Steiner emigrated from Germany in 1853 and quickly established himself as a daring aeronaut. Steiner's flight in 1857, the first attempt to fly to Canada across Lake Erie, made him famous. Due to adverse weather conditions, Steiner eventually was forced to jump into the lake and was rescued by the crew of the steamer Mary Stewart. His balloon was later found, in tatters, having successfully made it to Canada without its pilot. During the Civil War, Steiner served as a balloonist for the Union forces with Thaddeus S.C. Lowe's Balloon Corps. As a civilian in 1863, Steiner gave a tethered balloon ride to German officer, Ferdinand von Zeppelin, who was on leave as a military observer with Union army. Years later, after Count Zeppelin's rigid airships had flown over the cities of Europe, Zeppelin recalled his flight with Steiner as his inspiration.

Note: The digital images in this finding aid were repurposed from scans made by an outside contractor for a commercial product and may show irregular cropping and orientation in addition to color variations resulting from damage to and deterioration of the original objects.

Biographical / Historical:
Salomon August Andrée (1854-1897) was a pupil at the Technical Institute in Stockholm. During the 1870s and 1880s, Andrée became interested in both ballooning and meteorological and physical research in polar regions. In 1893, Andrée bought his first balloon and undertook various ascents, and by 1895 had put forth his plans for a balloon flight over the North Pole. The expedition was planned for the summer of 1896, but after reaching Spitsbergen, unfavorable weather conditions caused the flight to be canceled. Thus, the expedition commenced the following summer. Three days after takeoff, the balloon was forced to land, and the men - Andréee, Nils Strindberg, and Knut Fraenkel - spent six weeks trying to return to Spitsbergen before perishing. The remains of their last camp were not found until 1930.

This collection contains approximately three and a half cubic feet of material relating to the life and career of A. Roy Knabenshue. The collection includes correspondence, photographic material, drawings of aircraft, and flight records.
Scope and Contents:
The A. Roy Knabenshue Collection (accession XXXX.0136 and related accession XXXX.0370) contains approximately three and a half cubic feet of material relating to the life and career of a daring aeronaut and the United States' first successful dirigible pilot. The collection includes correspondence, photographic material, drawings of aircraft, and flight records. The material spans over seventy years, from the end of the nineteenth century to the nineteen-sixties.

The National Air and Space Museum (NASM) received these materials in several parts in the early 1960s. Material was donated by Mrs. A. Roy (Jane) Knabenshue and their son, Glenn Knabenshue. Original order, where identified, has been maintained.

Biographical/Historical note:
Augustus Roy Knabenshue was born July 15, 1876 in Lancaster, Ohio to Samuel S. and Salome Matlack Knabenshue. The family later moved to Toledo, Ohio where Roy's father became editor-in-chief of the Toledo Blade. It was there that Roy became interested in lighter-than-air flight after seeing a balloon ascension when he was five years old. His interest continued to grow in the years that followed and in 1899 he bought a captive balloon and its equipment. The next season, he began to take short leaves of absence from his job at Central Union Telephone Company and was operating his balloon at fairs and carnivals, charging attendees for ascensions. To protect his day job and spare his socially prominent family embarrassment, Knabenshue used the name "Professor Don Carlos" at his balloon engagements. By 1900, Knabenshue had begun to fabricate additional spherical balloons himself, for use in free ascensions.

In October of 1904, Knabenshue took a new balloon to Saint Louis to enter it in contests associated with the Louisiana Purchase Exposition. There he met Thomas S. Baldwin, who had brought his dirigible the California Arrow to the event. The airship proved incapable of take off with Baldwin at the controls, and the slimmer Knabenshue was asked to substitute as pilot. Possessing no experience with dirigibles, Knabenshue accepted Baldwin's instructions and on October 25 became the first person to successfully pilot a dirigible in the United States.

Roy Knabenshue's name would be associated with the term "first" many times in the next few years. In 1905, Knabenshue built his own airship, the Toledo I, and flew it at its namesake city on Independence Day. A month later, Knabenshue made the first flight of an airship over Manhattan, taking off from Central Park and circling the Times Building. On December 17, 1908, he made the first successful night flight of a dirigible in the United States.

By 1909, Knabenshue had teamed up with Lincoln Beachey to fly airships at various events. Beachey was to fly a Knabenshue dirigible a year later at the Los Angeles International Air Meet, held at Dominguez Field, Los Angeles, which Knabenshue was instrumental in organizing. Knabenshue also raced his own airship during the event, setting several records.

His success attracted the attention of the Wright brothers, who were considering entering the exhibition field. Knabenshue was hired to manage the Wright Exhibition Team beginning in 1910, and worked with the team periodically for the next few years. Associated professionally at times with Glenn Martin, Walter Brookins and James V. Martin, by 1917 he had formed the Knabenshue Aircraft Corporation to produce dirigibles, kite balloons and parachutes. During the First World War, this company made captive observation balloons for use by the United States Navy.

In 1933, Knabenshue began working for the National Park Service. His duties included surveying air routes, and the management of an autogiro project.

After suffering a heart attack in 1949, Knabenshue retired. He died on March 6, 1960, at the age of 83, and was buried at the Portal of the Folded Wings, Valhalla Memorial Park, North Hollywood, California. He had held Balloon License Number 31, Dirigible License Number 4, built ten airships and numerous balloons, was a prominent member of the Early Birds of Aviation, and had earned a significant place in American aviation history.

Biographical / Historical:
Donald Guthrie Cathcart [1889-1973] reported to the United States Army Balloon School in 1917. He was a free balloon pilot, an aerial observer, and flight instructor before his honorable discharge in 1920. Cathcart served at both Ross Field, Arcadia, California, and Fort Omaha, Nebraska. He was also a member of National Association of American Balloon Corps Veterans (NAABCV) and the Wingfoot Lighter than Air Society.

James Means (1855-1920) was an American industrialist who sacrificed his business to devote himself to the promotion of aviation. The collection consists of correspondence, publications, photographs, and scrapbooks.
Scope and Contents:
The collection consists of correspondence and scrapbooks. The correspondence is arranged into 15 sub-series: Aerial Experiment Association, Aero Club of America, Aero Club of Washington, Aeronautic Society of New York, Aeronautical Annuals, Octave Chanute and his daughters, Glenn Curtiss, House Resolution #7653, Ernest Jones, Otto Lilienthal, Henry Cabot Lodge, Hiram Maxim, Technical Matters, U.S. Signal Corps, and Albert Zahm. Of the three scrapbooks, one is a photograph album containing early glider photos and travel postcards. The second contains photos and news clippings regarding aviation in the 1890's, especially the work of Langley and Maxim with kites, balloons, and aerial bicycles. Clippings are in English, French, Spanish, Italian, German and Dutch. The third scrapbook is labeled 'James Means 1892' and consists of photos, letters, manuscripts, clippings in English and German, copies of legislation, and book excerpts.

James Means (1855-1920) was an American industrialist who sacrificed his business to devote himself to the promotion of aviation. Determined to disseminate information on flying, he collected and edited the most significant works of Otto Lilienthal, Octave Chanute, Samuel Langley and others, producing the 'Aeronautical Annuals' which appeared in 3 volumes in 1895, 1896 and 1897. Dr. Means studied bird-flight, kites and gliders, and designed model gliders in the early 1890s. He was awarded patents for his aircraft smoke signal device (1909), his aircraft launcher (1909), and his simplified control column for airplanes (1909-1911).

This collection consists of the official National Aeronautics Association (NAA) log of the 1933 Gordon Bennett International Balloon Race in which T. G. W. Settle, flying with C. H. Kendall, placed second; correspondence with the NAA regarding records set by Settle; two articles by Settle, "Winning a Balloon Race" and "The Gordon Bennett Race, 1932;" a binder of Settle Flight Reports, 1927-1933; thirteen black and white photographs of Settle, his family, officers of the USS Los Angeles (ZR-3), Roland Mayer, Dr. Karl Arnstein, Wilfred Bushnell, and Ward T. Van Orman at such events as the 1932 and 1933 Gordon Bennett Races and Settle's flight, in a Lippisch Prüfling (Examination) glider, from the USS Los Angeles to Anacostia, Washington, DC. Also included are several photocopies relating to Settle's illustrious career, part of an article on the 1998 Naval Aviation Hall of Honor inductees (of which Settle was one); an article by J. Gordon Vaeth entitled, "When the Race for Space Began;" and two green 16 by 11.5 inch scrapbooks, entitled Stratosphere Flight Scrapbook, First and Second Campaign, that contain newspaper articles, correspondence, photographs and telegrams relating to Settle's historic stratospheric balloon flight.

Biographical / Historical:
Vice Admiral Thomas Greenhow Williams "Tex" Settle, US Navy, became world famous in the Golden Age of Flight (the nineteen twenties and thirties) after becoming the first person of his time qualified to pilot a free balloon, blimp, glider, and airplane, and to command a rigid airship. Winner of many races and holder of a number of aeronautical records in endurance and altitude, he was also the first American to fly a pressurized cabin into the stratosphere. He served aboard both the USS Shenandoah (ZR-1) and the USS Los Angeles (ZR-3). Tex Settle twice received the Harmon Trophy for Aeronautics and, for his service in World War II, was awarded the Navy Cross, Legion of Merit and Bronze Star.

This collection consists of approximately 6000 color slides and over 2000 negatives/prints (a mixture of color and black and white) of civil and military aircraft taken by Seele, circa 1950s-1970s. The shots were taken in the United States, specifically in the Midwest. Aircraft from the following manufacturers are represented: Aero Commander, Arrow, Aeronca, Beechcraft, Bell, Bellanca, Boeing, Bristol, Bucker, Callair, Cessna, Consolidated, Convair, Curtiss, Dassault, de Havilland, Davis, Dart, Douglas, ERCO, Fairchild, Fleet, Ford, Goodyear, Great Lakes, Grumman, Howard, Hawker Siddeley, Hughes, Heinkel, Jodel, Junkers, Lockheed, Ling-Temco-Vought, Lawson, Parsons, Pitts, Pitcarin, Piper, Pazmany, Piaggo, Porterfield, Republic, SAAB, Sikorsky, Stampe, Stearman, Stinson, Swearingen, Taylor, Vickers, and Waco. In June of 2001 the Smitihsonian's Museum of American History transferred an additional shoebox of Seele photography that had been sent directly to them from the widow. This color images included balloon events as well as aircraft shots. The ballooning images are color prints taken mostly around Topeka, Kansas, while the aircraft images are color transparencies of aircraft taken, again, mostly around Topeka.
Biographical / Historical:
Jean Warren (J. W.) Seele (1924-1993) was born in Topeka, Kansas, and spent almost his entire life there. After his graduation from Topeka High School he was enrolled for about one and a half years at the Spartan School of Aeronautics, Tulsa, Oklahoma. Although he worked for a few years at Bendix Aviation Corp, Kansas City Division during the 1950s, most of his professional career was spent as an engineering technician for the Kansas Department of Transportation. While he was not directly employed in the aviation field, Seele's hobby was photographing aircraft. Over a twenty year period, Seele photographed aircraft and at various times he was the official photographer for the National Antique Airplane Association, and for the annual fly-in sponsored by the Experimental Aircraft Association at Rockford, Illinois. Seele's photographs often appeared in the publications of both organizations, and several of this photographs also appeared in Jane's All the World's Aircraft during the 1970s.

Additional materials: photographs taken by Seele of the Kansas countryside, including many of threshing demonstrations, were transferred to the Archives Center at the National Museum of American History.

Scope and Contents:
This collection consists of a Balloon Passport issued to the Clouth V for the 1909 Gordon Bennett Balloon Race. The passport is on paper that measures approximately 20 x 16 inches and is written in both German and French. The passport bears several seals and includes engravings of balloons along with the motto "Gordon Bennett, Zurich, 1909."

Biographical / Historical:
The 1909 Gordon Bennett Balloon Race was held in October in Zurich, Switzerland. The event featured three contests. A point-to-point race was held on October 1 in which ten competitors chose from fourteen different designated points. This event was won by the Swiss balloon Mars piloted by Mr. Farner. A distance race was held on October 2 and included twenty-one competitors from various classes based on size with prizes being awarded in each class. The Clouth V was entered into the Class 4 competition (for balloons ranging in size from 1201-1600 cubic meters). Class 3 was won by the Harburg II piloted by H. Sticker, Class 4 was won by the Hessen piloted by A. Engelhard, and Class 5 was won by the LZ 127 Graf Zeppelin piloted by Otto Korn. The Gordon Bennett Race started on October 3, 2010 and involved seventeen competitors. This race was won by Edgar W. Mix in the America II after a 696.5 mile flight ending in Poland that lasted more than 35 hours.

On March 27 and 28, 1910, sisters Elsbeth and Margarete Grosse of Meisen, Germany made an ascent in the "Graf Zeppelin" balloon that was piloted by Karl Hackstetter. This collection consists of a logbook and three letters written by the Grosse sisters to Hackstetter.
Scope and Contents:
This collection consists of a logbook entitled "Dresdener Wallfahrt 1910 - Wallfahrt des sächsischen ballon 'Graf Zeppelin', 27 u. 28 März 1910" ("Dresden Pilgrimage 1910 - Pilgrimage of the Saxon balloon 'Graf Zeppelin', March 27-28 1910"). The log contains entries (written in German Sütterlin script) written from 5:57 AM, March 27 to 3:23 AM, March 28. It is not known if the log was kept by Hackstetter or by either of the Grosse sisters. Also included in the collection are three letters written by the Grosse sisters to Hackstetter, dated April 4, 19 and 20, 1910, with an account of their balloon ascent.

On March 27 and 28, 1910, sisters Elsbeth and Margarete Grosse of Meisen, Germany made an ascent in the "Graf Zeppelin" balloon. The balloon was piloted by Karl Hackstetter (1876-1932), a balloonist, aeronaut, and designer of airships and airplanes. Margarete Grosse later wrote a book, Frauen auf Ballon- und Bergfahrten (Women in Balloons and Mountain Climbing), dedicated to her sister and published in 1951.

Biographical / Historical:
Jeannette Piccard (1895 - 1981) was the first women to reach the stratosphere. Piccard earned her balloon license in the summer of 1934, and on October 23rd of that year she, along with her husband Jean Piccard, lifted off in their balloon, A Century of Progress. Jeannette Piccard piloted the balloon to a height of 57,979 feet, while Jean Piccard was the scientific observer. With this flight Jeannette Piccard became the holder of the women's altitude record; she held this record until Russian cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova's space flight in 1963.

Biographical / Historical:
Lieutenant Fred Morgan was a captive balloon observer with the 69th Balloon Company, 4th Army Corps, American Expeditionary Forces, on the Western Front during World War I. On October 30, 1918 Morgan was observing artillery fire on a German trench mortar when his balloon was shot down by a Fokker aircraft. Morgan jumped to safety in a parachute, landing in the Nonsard Woods, France. While jumping from the basket, Morgan sustained injuries for which he was awarded the Purple Heart.

Scope and Contents:
This donation consists of Heveran's scrapbook which contains photographs and ephemera. The photographs include images of the following aircraft and aviation scenes: Curtiss H Flying Boat; SPAD XVI and XIII; de Havilland D.H.4; Salmson; Fokker D.VIII; Halberstadt C.II; Royal Aircraft Factory (RAF) S.E.5; power winch for raising a balloon; and images of the 14th Balloon Photo Section members. There are also images of armament, tanks (including a decoy German tank), German artillery and mortar, images of dead German soldiers, and images of the destruction of the French countryside. The scrapbook also includes a map, French and Belgian currency, a Christmas menu, and newspaper articles.
Biographical / Historical:
Glenn Edward Heveran, Sr. (1895-1960) was born in Chicago, Illinois. As a young man he was a commercial photographer and participated in the infant motion picture industry in Chicago. Heveran was inducted into the United States Army in March of 1918. He became a corporal in the 14th Balloon Photo Section, First Army, and was sent to France in August of 1918. When he returned home in 1919, he prepared a scrapbook, containing photographs that he took or collected during his time in France
