They include images of Apache men at a powwow near a mud house in Yuma, Arizona; the Hopi House at the Grand Canyon; a blanket weaver at Hopi House; a street scene from Pueblo Acoma; a Seminole wedding in Fort Lauderdale, Florida; women with leatherwork, baskets, and blankets; a horse-drawn travois used in a parade at the Annual Crow Indian Fair; Sioux people and tipis at Frontier Days in Cheyenne, Wyoming; Apache chief James A. Garfield, Ute Chief Sevaro and his family; and Iron Hail (also known as Dewey Beard (Minneconjou).
Biographical/Historical note:
Thomas Howard Woody (1935-2011) was a professor of sculpture at the University of South Carolina, co-author of several books on South Carolina history and postcards, and an avid collector of postcards. He received his undergraduate degree from Richmond Professional Institute and a master's degree from East Carolina University. Retiring after a 46-year long career at the University of South Carolina, he was awarded the title Distinguished Professor Emeritus.

The collection consists of photographs, possibly part of a travelog, depicting mostly American landscapes (particularly tourist destinations), transportation (railroads, roads, and boats), towns, and hotels. A few photographs of Native Americans including images of a Crow burial, a Pueblo ceremony, and men on horseback at Eagle Butte on the Yellowstone River. There are also scenic views made in Yellowstone National Park, California, the Teton Mountains, Badlands National Park, and the Grand Canyon; the latter includes an image of Theodore Roosevelt and party. Some images from outside of the United States include people and streets in Holland.
Most of the photographs were probably made by T. Parks Brownrigg, and the slides were prepared by Art and Travel Company, George W. Bond (for the Santa Fe Railroad), Detroit Photographic Company, Frank Jay Haynes, T. H. McAllister, G. L. Nichols, Pancoast and Hand, Scott and Van Altena, Sunset Engraving Company, and Underwood and Underwood.

Stereographic photographs made on the geographical explorations and surveys west of the 100th meridian, under Lieutenant George M. Wheeler, War Department, Corps of Engineers, U.S.A. 1871-74. The bulk of the photographs were made by Timothy H. Sullivan during the years 1871-1872 and 1874, but there are also some taken by William Bell in 1873. The photos include images of expedition party members, camps, and transportation, as well as pueblos, (including Zuni, Navajo, Apache, Coyotero Apache, Jicarilla Apache, Ute, and Mohave), puebloan people, and scenic views in canyons of the Colorado River, Canyon de Chelly, Apache Lake, and the Cerro Blanco Mountains.
Biographical/Historical note:
The geographical surveys west of the 100th meridian were operated under the United States Army Corps of Engineers and supervised by First Lieutenant (later Captain) George Montague Wheeler from 1869 through 1879. They were intended to document the geography in order to make accurate maps, record locations of Native American tribes in the region, select possible sites for military installations and rail or common roads, and note resources in the area. In total, the surveys analyzed the region now covered by Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho, and Oregon, and the expeditions produced 164 maps, 41 publications, and a series of stereoviews. Timothy H. O'Sullivan began photographing geographical surveys in 1867-1869 when he was the official photographer for Clarence King's United States Geological Exploration of the 40th Parallel. He served as the official photographer for the Wheeler surveys in 1871, 1872, and 1874, with William Bell taking over in 1873. O'Sullivan later became the United States Geological Survey's first photographer in Washington, D.C.

Photographs made during Elizabeth Compton Hegemann's trips to Hopi and Navajo reservations in the 1920s and early 1930s. They include images of Navajo, Hopi, and some Havasupai Indians, as well as the Grand Canyon and trading posts. Her photographs relating to Southwest Indians depict agriculture, crafts, and ceremonies, including a Navaho Squaw Dance and Hopi Niman Kachina ceremonies. There are also some images of Charles F. Lummis, Earl Halstead Morris, and John Wetherill.
Biographical/Historical note:
Elizabeth Compton Hegemann (1897-1962) was born near Cincinatti, Ohio, though she spent many of her summers visiting her grandparents in Southern California. She married her first husband, Mike Harrison, in 1925 and moved with him to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, where he worked for the National Park Service. They developed strong relationships with the Navajo, Hopi, and Havasupai Indians in that region. Hegemann separated from Harrison in 1928 and moved to Tuba City. She married Harry Rorick in 1929 and the two co-owned the Shonto Trading Post near Tsegi Canyon on the Navajo Reservation from 1929-1938.

Summary:
Little is known about the filmmaker Joseph Ross He travelled extensively and also had an intense interest in gardens and gardening. The films reflect these interests. Although most document his travels, several were shot around his home of gardens being planted and mature gardens.
Scope and Contents:
The colletion consists of footage presumably shot by Joseph Ross during his travels and around his home. Hawaii, Japan, New Zealand, Tahiti, Mexico, and Guatemala are featured in the travel films. The travel films include tourist footage as well as limited documenation of local peoples and traditional cultural activities.

Photographs made or collected by William E. Hughes during his travels in the United States, Greenland, Japan, Grenada, Trinidad, Barbados, Dominica, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Montserrat, St. Croix, St. Kitts, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, Cuba, Venezuela, France, Brazil, Costa Rica, Yugoslavia, Greece, and Turkey. They document the landscapes, churches, public buildings, parks, statues, artisans, markets, and city streets of these locations. Films and some photographs depict Hughes's family and trips to the Grand Canyon; Hawaii; Maine; New York; New Brunswick in Canada; and Washington, D. C. A scrapbook in the collection contains newspaper clippings relating to the 1891 Peary expedition to Greenland and a few letters accompany the photographs.
Lantern slides of Japan appear to be commercially made and hand-tinted, and slides relating to the Peary Expedition may have been made by Dr. Benjamin Sharpe, another scientist on the expedition.
Biographical/Historical note:
William E. Hughes (1857-1944) was a Philadelphia physician who accompanied Robert E. Peary on the first part of his expedition to Greenland in 1891. He received both his MD and PhD from the University of Pennsylvania in 1880.
