[Princeton University]: Garcia--freshman year.

Collection Photographer:
White, G. Howard, Dr., Jr.  Search this
Extent:
1 glass negative (black-and-white, 4 x 5 in.)
Type:
Archival materials
Glass negatives
Place:
United States of America--New Jersey--Mercer County--Princeton
Date:
1899.
General:
"Garcia" was probably the nickname of one of the numerous off-campus rooming houses and other lodgings in which a large part of the student body lived until well into the 20th century. According to the 1900 Princeton Bric-a-Brac yearbook, G. Howard White, Jr.'s "home" during his freshman year at the university, 1898-99, was at 47 University Place and it is likely that this was "Garcia." The name probably has its source in Calixto Garcia e Iniguez, Cuban insurgent and American ally in the Spanish-American War, a key subject in Elbert Hubbard's famous essay "A Message to Garcia," published in March 1899.
