During his trip to Nigeria, Elisofon visited Ede, one of oldest towns of Yoruba people; founded by Timi Agbale to establish a settlement to protect the Oyo caravan route to Benin. Today, the Oni continues to have great religious authority. During his trip to Nigeria, Elisofon visited Ife, oldest town of Yoruba people who consider it a holy city & the legendary birthplace of mankind. This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon was on assignment for Westinghouse Film and traveled to Africa from October 26, 1970 to end of March 1971.
