This accession consists of materials documenting the history of the Friends of the National Zoo (FONZ) and its activities in support of the National Zoological Park (NZP) and the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute (SCBI). As a nonprofit partner of NZP and SCBI, FONZ raises funds for mission support, manages a large volunteer force, and creates and conducts a wide variety of educational products and programs. Many of the materials in this accession document not just the history of FONZ, but the history of NZP and SCBI as well. Materials include images, clippings, brochures, maps, books, informational packages, educational activities, volunteer training materials, event invitations, meeting agendas, videotapes, development files for educational exhibits, patches, and related materials. Descriptive Entry:
This accession consists of records documenting the administration of the Golden Lion Tamarin Conservation Program (GLTCP). Originally administered entirely by the National Zoological Park (NZP), Department of Zoological Research, the GLTCP focused on the conservation of the golden lion tamarin in its natural habitat and was responsible for the release of captive-born golden lion tamarins into the Reserva Biológica de Poço das Antas (Brazil). In 1992, overall administration of the program was transferred to the Brazilian non-governmental organization, Associação Mico-Leão-Dourado. The Department of Zoological Research continued to administer NZP's involvement in reintroduction, tracking, and conservation education. Topics documented in this accession include fund raising, budget, conservation training, studbook administration, policies, publicity, research publication, evaluation of calling patterns, observation of released golden lion tamarins, reintroduction logistics, and involvement with international conservation organizations and committees.

Named for its primary benefactor, the Gallery is the world's largest gallery dedicated to philately. This accession consists of records which document the work of the Training Unit in the creation and implementation of training programs for the Native American community and related organizations. Areas of training include the care of Native American collections; the creation and management of tribal archives; exhibition planning, fabrication, and management; marketing Native arts; planning and managing American Indian cultural programs; starting a tribal museum; leadership; repatriation; fundraising; Native American languages; and other related areas. Also included are materials related to professionals visiting the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) to study and use NMAI collections for research purposes and to participate in professional development activities. Staff represented includes Karen Coody Cooper, Alyce Sadongei, and Jill Norwood.

Some records date from when the office was known as the Smithsonian Institution, Office of Community Services, Museum Training Program. Additionally some records date from before the creation of NMAI and were created by Native American Museums Training Programs (1977-1981) and the Native American Museums Programs (1981-1989) both part of the Smithsonian Institution, Office of Museum Programs. Lastly some records were created in collaboration between NMAI and the American Indian Museum Studies Program, Center for Museum Studies (which later became the Smithsonian Center for Education and Museum Studies).

This accession consists of records created and maintained during the tenures of National Museum of American History (NMAH) directors John Gray, Brent D. Glass, Spencer R. Crew, and acting director Marc Pachter, documenting museum administration, fundraising, renovation projects, exhibition redevelopment, and meetings of the NMAH board. Significant among these records are the annotated Chairman's copy of the Smithsonian Blue Ribbon Commission report on NMAH; extensive documentation in regard to the NMAH Public Space Renewal Project; a comprehensive introduction for the NMAH board in 1999, which provides a broad overview of the museum in that era; and plans for a NMAH collection storage facility. Also consists of a small amount of records documenting the early years of NMAH, when the museum was known at the Museum of History and Technology.
