The Captain A.H. McComb, Jr. Collection includes approximately 230 35mm slides of public and private gardens and landscapes dating from 1956 to 1966, photographed by Captain A.H. McComb, Jr. at sites in Washington, D.C., Maryland, Virginia, New York, United States Virgin Islands, Argentina, Bermuda, Capri, Cuba, Denmark, England, France, Germany, Haiti, Jamaica, Panama, Puerto Rico, and Tobago.
Scope and Contents note:
The Captain A.H. McComb, Jr. Collection includes approximately 230 35mm slides of public and private gardens and landscapes dating from 1956 to 1966, photographed by Captain A.H. McComb, Jr. at sites in Washington, D.C., Maryland, Virginia, New York, United States Virgin Islands, Argentina, Bermuda, Capri, Cuba, Denmark, England, France, Germany, Haiti, Jamaica, Panama, Puerto Rico, and Tobago. While McComb generally indicated the location and/or plant featured in each image on the corresponding slide mount, the location of sites documented in some of images is unknown. Also included are images of various flowers and plants, some of which are not attributable to a particular site. A typewritten list of image captions keyed to the numbered slides accompanied the donation.
Arrangement note:
Arranged into 2 series:

1. U.S. Gardens 2. Foreign Gardens

The original arrangement, which is maintained, consists of a two-part numbering system based on sequential (and chronological) rolls of film and the slides within each roll. Each roll was numbered sequentially by, presumably, Capt. McComb as were the slides within each roll (e.g. 1-1, 1-2, 1-3, and 7-1, 7-2, 7-3, etc.) with gaps in the numbering sequences representing slides not included in the donation to the Smithsonian.
Biographical/Historical note:
Captain Archibald H. "Bud" McComb, Jr. of Winchester, Virginia, (May 27, 1913-February 8, 2003), was the Chief of International Maritime Safety Coordinating Staff at the United States Coast Guard Headquarters in Washington, D.C and life member of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers.
Provenance:
Captain and Mrs. A.H. McComb donated the collection to the Office of Horticulture in (later Smithsonian Gardens) in 1981.

Asian American Arts and Media, Inc., collection, which dates from 1982 to 1997 and measures .01 linear feet, documents an early era of Asian American art activism in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. The collection includes flyers, photo postcards, clippings and newsletters, which highlight the organizations' activities aimed "to promote more positive and realistic images of Asian Pacific Americans through the arts and humanities, and to develop a greater appreciation ans awareness of Asian Pacific American art forms." Summary:
The collection, which dates from 1969 to 1991 and measures 1.91 linear feet, documents the history of the District of Columbia Art Association, which was founded in 1961 by D.C. public school teachers. The collection is comprised of business documents, correspondence, exhibition catalogs, and artist biographies.
Scope and Contents note:
Administrative: The series consists primarily of articles of incorporation, notices of tax exemptions, employer identification numbers, first board meeting documentation, as well as membership applications.

Correspondence: The series contains correspondence either to or from Mr. Peter L. Robinson, Jr. or Sylvia Jackson both of whom have served as Presidents of the D.C. Art Association.

Exhibitions: The series contains D.C.A.A. exhibition catalogs, artist biographies, miscellaneous invitations, and a brochure published by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (N.A.S.A.) where Peter L. Robinson, Jr. was employed for over thirty years, and retired as Director of the Graphics and Management Presentations Division.

The series consists of (24) 8x10 photographs, which document D.C.A.A. exhibitions and Robinson's tenure at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (N.A.S.A.)
Arrangement note:
The D.C. Art Association records are arranged into four main categories: Administration, Correspondence, Exhibitions and Photographs. Material in each folder is arranged in chronological order by date ranging from 1969 through 1991.
Biographical/Historical note:
In 1961 the D. C. Art Education Association, later known as the D.C. Art Association, was founded by the District of Columbia public school art teachers. In 1969 the organization increased its membership by enlisting the support of individuals, as well as community based organizations, and cultural institutions, such as the Anacostia Neighborhood Museum in an effort to promote, encourage and stimulate interest in both the fine and visual arts. Through the strong and diligent efforts of many, the D.C. Art Association commonly referred to as D.C.A.A., successfully made invaluable contributions to the arts by organizing exhibitions, lectures and panel discussions, which furthered the awareness and appreciation of the fine arts to the community at large. Many lives have been cultivated and rewarded by the D.C. Art Associations efforts to support professional artists and implement public programming in the community. Although the D.C. Art Association was disbanded its contributions were a vital catalyst in bringing enrichment and cultural awareness to the art community in Washington, D.C. By upholding its motto, "Dedicated to Foster and Promote the Visual Arts through Community Involvement," the D. C. Art Association has enhanced the lives of many by exploring the African American presence in the visual arts.

The D.C. Art Association records were donated to the Anacostia Community Museum in April of 2003 by Mr. Peter L. Robinson, Jr., former President and Treasurer of the D.C. Art Association.

An exhibition examining the faith and spiritual traditions in African American religious life in the 1990s. The exhibition features members of Christian churches as well as those of other faiths. In coordination with the exhibition 'Speak to My Heart: Communities of Faith and Contemporary African American Life,' Dr. Cornel West spoke about the crisis in America as it relates to people who suffer, of all colors, of all faiths, and of all political persuasions. He stressed the importance of gathering community builders and provided guidance on 'reinventing ourselves, our public institutions and our communities.' West spoke of the truth or lack of truth in America; democracy in America; political and economic reform; and getting to the deep, hidden truths about America and its legacy, including white supremacy, male supremacy, wealth inequality. Specifically, he talked about how to restructure U.S. economy; the role of media and corporations; churches and faith-based communities; new social order; the loss, or lack, of dignity; and the Democratic Party's disconnect with the African American community. This lecture and conversation took place post-election cycle and a few weeks after the release of his and Roberto Unger's book, 'The Future of American Progressivism.'

Gail S. Lowe, Ph.D. talked about the center of African American life and community - the Black Chruch. She detailed the significance and work of the Black Church in communities, and provided an introduction to the upcoming exhibition 'Speak to My Heart: Communities of Faith and Contemporary African American Life.' Lowe discussed each section of the exhibition, and the types of materials and information the museum planned to include in the exhibit. The talk was part of a meeting for the Friends for the Preservation of African American History and Culture.
