One volume, three quarter-bound maroon leather with maroon bead-grain cloth and marbled endpapers. Gilt titles on front board, gilt spine, false raised bands. Bookplate of W.K. Bixby on the inside front board. Loosely inserted in the front is an obituary clipping for Fenollosa. Approximately 180 tipped-in leaves, consisting of the manuscripts of Fenollosa's poetry which would eventually be published as East and West: The Discovery of America and Other Poems. The final 10 leaves consist of Fenollosa's explanatory notes.
Contains manuscripts of his five-part poem East and West: Part I. The First Meeting of East and West; Part II. The Separated East; Part III. The Separated West; Part IV. The Present Meeting of East and West; Part V. The Future Union of East and West. .

Biographical / Historical:
Ernest Francisco Fenollosa (1853-1908) was a poet and student of Asian art. Born in Salem, Massachusetts, Fenollosa studied at Harvard, Cambridge University and the art school at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts before traveling to Japan to teach political economy and philosophy at the Imperial University at Tokyo. In 1988, he helped establish the Tokyo Fine Arts Academy and the Imperial Museum, serving as its director. For his many efforts to preserve temples and shrines and their art work, the Emperor of Japan decorated him with the orders of the Rising Sun and the Sacred Mirror. In 1890 Fenollosa returned to the Boston Museum of Fine Arts to take the position of curator of the department of Oriental arts. However, his public divorce and immediate remarriage in 1895 to the writer Mary McNeill Scott (1865-1954) led to his dismissal from the Museum in 1896 and he returned to Japan to teach English literature at the Tokyo Higher Normal School. He returned to the United States in 1900 to write and lecture on Asia. His works include East and West: The Discovery of America and Other Poems (1893); Epochs of Chinese and Japanese Art (1912), compiled by his widow, Mary McNeil Fenollosa; and two works on Japanese drama (ed. by Ezra Pound, 1916).
A former chairman of the board of American Car & Foundry, William Keeney Bixby (1857-1931), like Charles Lang Freer, was an avid patron and collector of the arts. A handwritten note inscribed by Bixby on a flyleaf states that he acquired these manuscripts from a Boston dealer, having become "interested in Japanese Art and in Mr. Fenallosa & his work through seeing the collection of Chas. S. Freer on many delightful visits at his house and from frequent conversations with him [...] I feel that the Ms. of East & West should belong to my friend who taught me to appreciate early Japanese Art." In another inscription, dated March 4, 1910, Bixby dedicates the volume to Freer "with regards of his friend [...] for presentation to Smithsonian Institute or otherwise as he may elect."

One journal-style volume, quarter-bound black pebble-grained cloth with brown marbled paper boards. Approximately 200 pages, mostly filled with handwritten notes. Paper onlay on the front cover bears the handwritten inscription "Notes taken before Mr. Freer's collection in Detroit -- some amount is [?] -- mostly [?] lantern slides." Inside front cover has the bookplate of Ernest K. Fenollosa; the bookplate also bears the ink signature "Mary McNeil Fenollosa (Sidney McCall)" and the ink stamp of the Freer Gallery of Art, Washington D.C. Loosely inserted at the beginning of the journal is an undated receipt for the purchase of several items from the Walpole Galleries in New York City.
The first part of the journal, dated November 1907, contains approximately 104 pages of notes, presumably written in Fenollosa's hand. On the back cover, another paper slip bears the inscription "This end of the note book to be used for a list of Illustrations from Stokes' prints to be sent Mr. Heinemann -- begun March 16th 1911." From this point, a new set of notes begins, written after Fenollosa's death and consisting of approximately 34 pages.

Rocky Korr was an art handler for the Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery from 1960-2010. The oral history was conducted June 2010 by Freer|Sackler Archivist Rachael Woody. The interview was conducted in an attempt to capture Mr. Korr's wealth of knowledge on the evolution and history of the Freer|Sackler Galleries and the art handling profession. The history includes stories about the galleries, recounting major milestones and events, and anecdotes from Mr. Korr's four decades of experience at the Smithsonian.

This collection is an amalgamation of letters written and recieved by prominent figures in 19th and 20th century American Art. Included in the collection is a significant portion of letters from Abbott Thayer to correspondents from his circle of family, friends and art world figures such as Maria Oakey Dewing and Samuel Coleman.

Biographical / Historical:
Beginning in his youth Thomas Brumbaugh collected autographed correspondence. Mr. Brumbaugh's collecting instincts resulted in a unique collaborative collection providing a glimpse into the lives of a variety of 19th and 20th century American artists, such as Abbott Thayer. Brumbaugh was a professor of fine arts at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, and author of many articles on American art and artists.

Papers, 1942-1997, and undated, chiefly in Chinese, a small portion photocopies, including: about 70 letters received, 1964-19997, from friends and colleagues; manuscript drafts and research notes; printed material, including exhibition catalogues and articles written by Wang and others; a few snapshots of Wang and friends, and approximately 1,00 still photographs, 500 35mm slides, 80 color transparencies, and 150 negatives, that mostly depict the work by Bada Shanren, including fakes attributed to the artist.

Professor Wang Fangyu (1913-1997), collector, art historian, regarded highly for his extensive research on the Chinese artist Zhang Da (1626-1705), commonly known as Bada Shanren. He was one of the world's foremost experts on the life and art of the artist. Prof. Wang also taught Chinese language at Yale University for numerous years.

Papers of art collectors Pauline Baerwald Falk (1910-2000) and Myron (Johnny) Falk Jr. (1906-1992), 1904-1998. Created and collected by the Falks, this collection includes: biographical data; black-and-white and color prints of art objects and people; photo albums of art objects in the Falk's art collection; symposium papers, scholarly reviews, and newspaper articles on Chinese art; Professor Alfred Salmony's lecture notes, Metropolitan Museum; purchase invoices for Chinese art, Japanese art, and Korean art; photographs, receipts, itineraries, one seal, atlases, and journals relating to the Falk's various trips to Asia and Europe, personal correspondence and correspondence with art dealers; guest books from 17 East 66th Street, New York and 888 Park Ave., New York, signed by guests from 1949-1997; committee papers; exhibition loan forms, Mr. Falk's notes about the collection and sale results from property consigned for sale; and four reels 16mm motion picture film taken during the Falk's 1937 trip to Asia.

Biographical / Historical:
Myron S. (Johnny) Falk Jr., and his wife Pauline Baerwald Falk were active philanthropists, prominent Asian art collectors and were both active in the Jewish and Art communities.
The purchase that started their collection happened while on their 1935 honeymoon in the English countryside where they came upon two blue-and-white Ming Dynasty porcelain dishes. Later, taking one of the inaugural Pan Am Clipper flights to China in 1937, their collecting began in earnest. There are home movies in the collection taken by Johnny that document their trip to a largely untouched China. However, because China was closed to the West starting in 1950, they were unable to return until 1979.
As collectors, the Falks made a good team. Due to his engineering background from school, Johnny became an expert on firing techniques and glazes; while Pauline was known as the ''eye.'' Their fervent and long-term involvement in the Asian art community led them to become close friends with the biggest dealers in America and Europe.
Johnny and Pauline collected wares of the Song dynasty, archaic bronzes, jades, stone sculptures, several fine Ming and Qing porcelains, Korean ceramics, and nearly 100 Japanese paintings. After more than fifty years collecting their art work totaled over 700 items.
Johnny and Pauline lent their artworks to museums, advised art institutions in the United States and abroad, and fostered the training of a new generation of curators, scholars and other professionals in the Asian art field.
Johnny was an investment banker, philanthropist and prominent collector of Asian art. He was a longtime trustee of the Asia Society and helped found the Oriental Art Council, Roebling Society of the Brooklyn Museum and Japan Society Gallery. He also served as a director of the New York Foundation and Hebrew Technical Institute, a board member of the Federation of Jewish Philanthropies and chairman of the Bennington College board of trustees.
Pauline was a philanthropist, collector of Asian art, president of the Jewish Board of Family and Children Services, and founder of the New Lincoln School in Manhattan. She worked with displaced Jewish refugees before and during World War II. She was active in the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee and became a founding member of the National Refugee Service, the Council for Jewish Women and the Jewish Social Service Association.
Together they were strong supporters of the Asia Society, the Chinese Art Society, they helped establish the Friends of Asia House Gallery in 1971, and founded the Friends of the China Institute in America Gallery. They also established the "Archives of Chinese Art" in 1945 an important scholarly journal that is published today by The Asia Society as the "Archives of Asian Art," and are among the founding members of the Friends of the Far Eastern Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Friends of Asian Art at the Brooklyn Museum.

Photographs and a newspaper clipping, ca 1945-1972, documenting the Chinese art collection of Captain and Mrs. Sergius N. Ferris Luboshez, formed substantially during the 1945-1949, while Luboshex served in the Department of State. Documented are works dating from the Neolithic (ca. 5000-ca. 1500 B.C.) to the Ch'ing dynasty (1644-1912); and a catalog of artworks from his collection exhibited at the University of Maryland Art Gallery in 1972. Also included are photographs taken by Captain Luboshez of place views and people in China. Formats include color snapshots, black-and-white prints, safety and nitrate film negatives, and 35mm color slides.

Biographical / Historical:
Captain Sergius N. Ferris Luboshez (1896-1984), scientific researcher and educator, lawyer, and collector of Chinese art. Born of American parents in England, Luboshez studies philosophy and aesthetics at the British Institute of Philosophical Stduies. He later taught physics at the University of London, experimenting in the sonar detection of submarines, and developing a number of inventions relating to radiation shielding and light control. He studies law in England, serving as a barrister-at-law, and later as a member of the New York Bar and that of the District of Columbia. With the outbreak of World War II, Luboshez entered the United States Navy. After the war, he became general counsel to the Office of the Foreign Liquidation Commissioner of the U.S. Department of State for an area that included China and Japan. He was subsequently appointed central field commisssioner with headquarters in Shanghai.

One of four reels 16mm motion picture film taken during Johnny and Pauline Falk's 1937 trip to China, Korea and Japan. Kodak had only recently made color film available, so this may be the earliest color footage of many of the locations the Falks visited.

The Falks took one of the inaugural Pan Am Clipper flights to China in 1937. Myron S. (Johnny) Falk Jr., and his wife Pauline Baerwald Falk were active philanthropists, prominent Asian art collectors and were both active in the Jewish and Art communities.

Photographs created to document the Sanso Collection, a private growing collection of Japanese paintings acquired since the late 1950s by collectors and co-trustees Doris and Peter F. Drucker. The works, dating from the 14th to the 19th century, include masterworks from the Kamakura period, Suiboku paintings of the Muromachi and Momoyama periods. Zenga paintings from the Edo period, and paintings by masters of the nanga or literati school. Each photograph is captioned with artist, date, description, medium, mount format, dimensions, and an assigned number.

Peter Ferdinand Drucker, 1909 - , author, management consultant, and educator; economist at the London Banking House (1933-1937); an American advisor to British banks (1937-1942); a consultant to major American business (1940 - ); a professor of philosophy and politics at Bennington College (1942-1949); a professor of management at New York University (1950-1972); and a lecturer at the Department of Art at Pomona College in California (1979-1985). Additionally and author of management textbooks; producer of film series; and recipient of numerous awards and honorary degrees.

Biographical / Historical:
Sir Edmund Percival Hillary (1919-2008) was New Zealand mountaineer and explorer. As part of the ninth British expedition to Everest, Hillary and his Sherpa guide Tenzing Norgay were the first men to reach the summit of Mt. Everest, the highest point on Earth, on May 29, 1953. For this feat, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II, while Tenzing received the George Medal, one of Britain's highest civilian awards. Hillary would go on to participate in other expeditions in the Himalayas, as well as an expedition to the South Pole. In 1985, he was appointed New Zealand High Commissioner to India. Hillary also devoted much of his time and energy to various philanthropic causes, particularly those dedicated to preserving the ecology of the Himalayas and improving the living conditions of the Sherpa people. In 1998, Hillary was the recipient of the James Smithson Bicentennial Medal in honor of his "monumental explorations and humanitarian achievements." This autograph drawing was made by Hillary during a press conference at the Freer Gallery on November 16.

Biographical / Historical:
Alexander Coburn Soper was a preeminent professor and historian of Asian art, concentrating primarily on Japanese and Chinese architecture, Chinese art from the Tang through the Northern Sung period, Gandharan Indian art, and Buddhist and secular art of the Six Dynasties period. Published widely, he became the editor of the journal Artisbus Asiae in 1958. Over the course of his life he was active in the American Oriental Society, the Japan Society, and the Association for Asian Studies. He was a professor of Art History at Bryn Mawr and the Institute of Fine Arts in New York.
Sherwood Ford Moran (1885-1983) was a missionary, social worker, Marine, World War II PoW interrogator, and Asian art scholar. He studied Union Theological Seminary in New York and was then enlisted for work initially in India, but rerouted to Japan in 1917, mostly in the area of Osaka, remaining there until the entry of the United States in World War II in 194. During the war, he was an active Marine and a PoW interrogator at Guadacanal. He became extremely interested in Chinese and Japanese Buddhist art, publishing several articles in Artibus Asiae.
