Scope and Contents:
During her trip to Mali, Maya Bracher visited the town of San, situated on the main road between Segou and Mopti. This photograph was taken when Maya Bracher accompanied Eliot Elisofon on assignment for Westinghouse Film and traveled to Africa from October 26, 1970 to end of March 1971.

"The kanaga mask is part of a costume traditionally worn only for the dances of the Dama funerary ceremonies,and is accompanied by particular drum rythms from particular drums which generate specific dances. Only initiated, circumcised members of the all-male Awa secret society dance the kanaga." [Harris M., 1989: Visual tropes: The Kanaga Mask of the Dogon people of West Africa, Yale University]. This photograph was taken by Maya Bracher when she traveled to Africa from October 26, 1970 to end of March 1971. She was on assignment for Eliot Elisofon when he wrote, produced, and directed a four-hour television series for Group W (Westinghouse Broadcasting Company) titled Black African Heritage (1973). The series was divided into four segments, lasting 50 minutes each: The Congo, The Bend of the Niger, The Slave Coast, and Africa's Gift.

The reintegration phase resolves the conflicts and re-establishes order. The kanaga and sirige are paired in this phase and create a symbolism of the balanced pairing of male and female aspects." "The Great Mosque (1909) at Djenne, based on the indigenous Manding heritage, represents a development of sub-Saharan building that has come to be regarded as the synthesis of local regional design. The building became a prototype for many subsequent mosques, including those at San, Segou and Mopti." [Frishman M. and Khan H.-U., 1994: The Mosque. Thames and London Ltd.]. Scope and Contents:
"The Great Mosque (1909) at Djenne, based on the indigenous Manding heritage, represents a development of sub-Saharan building that has come to be regarded as the synthesis of local regional design. The building became a prototype for many subsequent mosques, including those at San, Segou and Mopti." [Frishman M. and Khan H.-U., 1994: The Mosque. Thames and London Ltd.]. This photograph was taken when Maya Bracher accompanied Eliot Elisofon on assignment for Westinghouse Film and traveled to Africa from October 26, 1970 to end of March 1971.

"Blacksmiths, irine, and their wives, live amongst the Dogon, although their houses are always at the peripheries of a settlement. When a smith wishes to establish himself, after years of apprenticeship with his father, he requests dwelling and forge space from the village of his choice. Aside from their integral role in the Dogon economy, blacksmiths are responsible for carving ritual statues in wood, and their wives make the pots, wone, used in ancestral shrines, but do not make other pots." [Lane P., 1988: Settlement as History: A Study of Space and Time amog the Dogon of Mali, University of Cambridge].
