Customs declarations and inventories of purchases made by Charles Freer while in Egypt between December 6th, 1906 and January 22nd, 1907. Also includes letters of instruction sent to Freer's secretary in Detroit, John M. Kennedy. Purchases include ancient Egyptian artifacts, as well as early Christian manuscripts purchased from Ali Arabi in Cairo.

A photographic album of 90 silver-gelatin photographs depicts minarets in Cairo, Egypt, with annotations in Arabic and English describing the date and title of each minaret.
Arrangement:
Slides are arranged by county and city or country and subject, then by Hare's use of the materials. The prints are mounted in the albums in original order.
Biographical / Historical:
Ambassador Raymond A. Hare was born in 1901 in Martinsburg, West Virginia and raised in Manchester, Iowa and Boothbay Harbor, Maine. He received a B.A. from Grinnell College in 1924 and joined the Foreign Service in 1927. He retired in 1966 and throughout his career Hare served as U.S. ambassador to Egypt, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and the United Arab Republic. He also served as the director general of the U.S. Foreign Service (1956-1958) and was affiliated with the Middle East Institute in Washington, D.C. as its president (1966-1969), national chairman (1969-1976), and chairman emeritus starting in 1976. As an amateur photographer, Hare documented Islamic architecture during his extensive travels in the Middle East, especially in Egypt, Syria, and Turkey. Ambassador Raymond A. Hare died of pneumonia on February 9, 1994.

Purchase vouchers, notes and price relating to purchases made by Charles Freer while in Egypt, Syria, Palestine, Lebanon, Turkey and Paris between May and August, 1908. Purchases were primarily Syrian and Persian pottery and tiles, but also included ancient Egyptian artifacts, manuscripts, and a mortuary bust from Palmyra. Dealers included Maurice Nahman, Cairo; Marcopoli & Co., Aleppo; Murad Barody, Beirut; N. Ohan, Jerusalem; Tabbagh Freres & Co., Paris, and Dikran Kelekian, Paris. Documents also include travel itinerary notes and a reciept for a donation for relief of the poor of Aleppo.

Photographs taken and lantern slides collected by Andrew and Martha Ruch to document their experiences as missionaries in Africa during the 1920s. The photographs document Andrew and Martha Ruch's missionary work and their activities among the Kikuyu people. Places shown include Cairo, Egypt; the Mediterranean Sea; a beach in Mombasa, Kenya; Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania; Port Said, Egypt and the Suez Canal. Activities depicted include building houses, carrying loads such as grass (for thatching), luggage, water and wood; cooking; drying skins; grinding millet; pounding sugar cane and selling items from boats to ship passagers. Ceremonies included are baptisms and church ceremonies. Portraits of people include Christian converts; chiefs, children; families; Muhia, Ruchs' assistant; the Ruches; and warriors. Many of the portraits document African clothing, ornaments, scarification and weapons. Architectural images include building materials, grain bins, houses (including Ruch's home), mosques, museums in Cairo, pyramids, railroads, temples in Egypt and villages. Boats, motorcycles and ships are also pictured. Nature scenes of landscapes and animals vary greatly and include mountains, trails, rivers, vegetation, waterfalls as well as birds, camels, cattle, donkeys, lizards and a lion.

Andrew H. Ruch, 1899-1966, missionary and pastor; graduate of the Moody Bible Institute, 1921, received ThD from Webster University, 1930. Martha W. Ruch, 1898-1989, wife of Andrew Ruch, graduate of the Moody Bible Institute, 1922.After Martha Ruch graduated from Moody in 1922, they married and left for Africa. They set up a mission in a Kikuyu Reserve in Ruiru, Kenya, and worked there until 1925, when they returned to the United States. Andrew Ruch spent most of his life as a pastor in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
