Place:
Prospect (Princeton, New Jersey)
United States of America -- New Jersey -- Mercer County -- Princeton
Scope and Contents:
The folder includes a worksheet, photocopies of book excerpts and correspondence, and other information about the garden.
General:
Designed by John Notman around 1850 in an Italianate Victorian style, Prospect was the home of John Potter, a wealthy merchant originally from Charleston, South Carolina. At that time the property was not part of the Princeton University campus, but in 1878 it was bought by Robert L. and Alexander Stuart, who deeded it to the university. It served as the president's home until 1968, when it was converted to use as a faculty club and a glass addition was constructed. Prospect's gardens have seen many variations over the years, including design work by Beatrix Farrand around the time of the Princeton presidency of Woodrow Wilson (Farrand also served as a consulting landscape architect to the university from about 1913 to 1943). Part of Farrand's legacy was to create a design of paths and plantings in the shape of the university shield when viewed from above, which is maintained today via symmetrical boxwood hedges and arborvitae trees. Specimen trees of many varieties include an Atlas Cedar, Hawthorn, American Beech, and Tulip Poplar, as well as many varieties of conifers and evergreens, such as spruce, pine, and Canadian hemlock. Plantings are changed several times during the growing season; thousands of bulbs are a spring highlight. The images in this series are from the early 20th century, 1930 being an approximate date. Other images of Princeton University may be found in NJ110.
Persons associated with the site include Beatrix Farrand (landscape architect, ca. 1912), John Notman (architect, ca. 1850), John Potter (former owner, 1849-1878), and Robert L. and Alexander Stuart (former owners, ca. 1878).

Extent:
135 Cubic feet (10,690 posters)
Type:
Collection descriptions
Archival materials
Posters
Date:
1863-1950
Summary:
An extensive and comprehensive collection of posters from World War I and World War II.
Scope and Contents:
Primarily war-related posters.
Arrangement:
The collection is arranged into six series.

Series 1: Pre-World War One, 1863-1917

Series 2: World War One, 1911-1923

Series 3: Between Wars, 1912-1939

Series 4: World War Two, 1939-1945

Series 5: Post World War Two, 1945-1948

Series 6: Unknown, 1913-1918
Biographical / Historical:
The Princeton University Library donated this extensive collection of World War I and World War II materials to the Smithsonian Institution in 1963 and 1967. The bulk of the 1963 donation, stored in six large wooden crates, was sent to an off site storage location. Other posters donated in 1963, primarily World War II British in origin, were stored in the Division of Political History; they were later transferred to the Division of Armed Forces History. In 1967, Princeton donated an additional five albums of posters that had been overlooked in 1963; these albums were also stored in the Division of Armed Forces History.

In 1990 and again in 1991, the NMAH Division of Conservation was awarded Smithsonian Research Resources grants to conserve and catalog the collection. The posters in the crates were in extremely precarious condition, evidencing extensive tears, water damage, dirt, mold, and insect damage. Their condition was so extreme that handling, cataloging, or mere counting was not deemed possible outside of a major rehousing project. In 1992, the NMAH Archives Center assumed curatorial responsibility for the collection and took over direction of the project.
Provenance:
Collection donated by the Princeton University Library in 1963 and 1967.

Descriptive Entry:
This accession consists of the papers of tropical ecologist and evolutionary biologist Egbert ("Bert") Giles Leigh, Jr. Leigh received his B. A. in Math from Princeton University in 1962 and his Ph. D. in Biology from Yale University in 1966. Leigh served as an assistant professor in biology from 1966 through 1972 at Princeton, but was also appointed by the University to serve as a biologist at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) beginning in 1969. In 1972, Leigh left Princeton to become a full-time staff scientist at STRI, moving to Panama with his wife Elizabeth ("Lizzie") Hodgson Leigh and raising a family in a growing community of both American and international researchers. The Leighs lived on Barro Colorado Island and the nearby town of Gamboa for much of the next 50 years until the death of Lizzie in 2008 and the end of Bert's emeritus scientist status in 2019.

Much of this accession documents Bert Leigh's research trips and field observations. Lizzie Leigh often accompanied him on these trips and occasionally kept field notes or trip diaries as well. The Leighs made numerous trips to Madagascar, Malaysia (generally referred to by Leigh as "Malaya," the pre-1963 name for the region), India, and Tatoosh Island, Washington. They also traveled extensively through Panama and to other tropical regions throughout the world.

In addition, this accession documents the STRI research community and the unique relationships formed between long-time staff and their families and shorter-term visiting researchers. Much of the correspondence is addressed to both Bert and Lizzie, to the entire family, or even to just Lizzie and is often more personal than professional in nature. Photographs of friends, family, pets, and day-to-day life accompany those of specimens and research activities.

Materials in this accession include correspondence, slides, photographs, greeting cards, postcards, field notes, diaries, plant censuses, trip reports, scientific illustrations, identification guides, sketches, permits, grant proposals, lecture notes, and related materials.

Date:

Summary:
The Dr. G. Howard White, Jr. Collection contains images of family members and residences relating to the White family of Catonsville, Maryland and Middleburg, Virginia and the Liebig family of Catonsville, Maryland, as well as recreational, industrial, and general sites in Virginia, Maryland, and New Jersey. The images, taken by Dr. G. Howard White, Jr. and Dr. Gustav Adolph Liebig, both amateur photographers, document everything from informal family gatherings and outings to domestic servants, workers, factories and railroad lines. The acession file includes some genealogical information and research on properties conducted in 2005.
Scope and Contents note:
The Dr. G. Howard White, Jr. Collection includes (203) photographic images dated c. 1890s-1920s taken by amateur photographers Dr. G. Howard White, Jr. and Dr. Gustav Adolph Liebig. It includes a diverse sampling of scenes, from family gatherings, homes, and recreational outings to train depots and railway lines, mill and factory workers, domestic servants, livestock, barns and other agricultural and industrial scenes of everyday life. The majority of the photographs were taken in Catonsville, Maryland, and Virginia; many show the homes (both exterior and interior shots) of the White, Dulany, Liebig and Lemmon families. Some show the Princeton University campus in New Jersey. The collection as a whole is a rich sampling of domestic, recreational, and working life in the mid-Atlantic region at the turn of the twentieth century.
Biographical/Historical note:
Dr. G. Howard White, Jr., the principal photographer of the collection, was born at 'Crednall' in Middleburg, Virginia. Many of the people depicted in the photographs of homesteads (such as 'Argyle' in Ellicott City, Maryland) are related to the White family.

Dr. Gustav Adolph Liebig photographed other images in the White Collection. He lived on an estate known as 'Tanglewood,' believed to be located across the street from the Whites in Catonsville, Maryland. (This may account for why Dr. White ended up with images by Dr. Liebig in his collection.) The Liebig family also features prominently in the White Collection.
