Scope and Contents:
The collection includes 29 postage stamps from the Republic of Mali, (24) color postcards, (2) 8 x 10 inch black and white photogaphs, and (2) framed thank you letters to "Terri" (Ambassador Fred Hadsel). Two postcards (1970, 1972) are to Winifred Hadsel, two have notes describing the location/date (1972-1973), while the rest are blank. The postcards depict landscapes and people in Somalia, Mali, Ivory Coast, and Niger, among others. One of the thank you letters is from Prince Ermias and Gelila Sahle-Selanie (October 25, 1999). The second is from Richard Beresford and Timothy Holmes, thanking Ambassador Hadsel for his hospitality towards Prince Ermias and his family during their visit to Saratoga (September 19, 1999). One of the black and white photos is by Bob Puglisi and depicts Winifred Hadsel and actress Lynn Fontanne. The other is of Ambassador Hadsel and Mrs. Hadsel receiving a painting. A handwritten note on the verso reads: "Farewell to Accra".

Summary:
Photographs and film taken by Edwin Converse Higbee during his trip from Capetown to Cairo in 1929 aboard the S.S. Corinthia. The trip was sponsored by the Raymond & Whitcomb Co., a travel service based in Boston, Massachusetts, and promoted as a Round Africa Cruise. Images reflect a variety of people, countryside and architecture.

This collection includes 511 original slides and 511 copy slides created by Christraud M. Geary during a research trip to South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe in 1995. Locations depicted include Johannesburg, South Africa; various locals in Zimbabwe, including Harare, Mashonaland, Bulawayo, Matano Hills, Naletale, Victoria Falls, the Zambezi River, and Great Zimbabwe; and Livingstone, Zambia. Subjects include exhibitions and object displays at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe, the Livingstone Museum, and the Natural History Museum in Bulawayo; sculptures in Chapungu Sculpture Park; views of the Chinamore District, Domboshawa Caves, Ngomakuria Mountain, Khami Ruins, Matabo Hills, Naletale Ruins, Victoria Falls, Zambezi River, and ruins of Great Zimbabwe; and participants, including Doran Ross, in the Archives and Museum Project Workshop at a conference in Harare.

Biographical/Historical note:
Christraud M. Geary (1946-) was formally a curator of the Eliot Elisofon Photographic Archives at the National Museum of African Art. She received a PhD in Cultural Anthropology and African Studies from the University of Frankfurt, Germany, in 1973. Geary specializes in the history of photography in Africa and in the study of African art.

Biographical/Historical note:
Photographer Constance Stuart Larrabee (1914-2000) was best known for her images taken in South Africa. Born in Cornwall, England, she was raised in Pretoria. She studied photography in London (1933-1935) and at the Bavarian State Institute for Photography in Munich (1935-1936), where she was influenced by the avant-garde work of artists at the Bauhaus. Returning to South Africa, Larrabee set up a studio and photographed many leading cultural and political figures of the period. During World War II she served as South Africa's first woman war correspondent, and in 1950 she married American Sterling Larrabee and moved to the United States.

Larrabee began photographing the peoples of South Africa in the late 1930s. She published extensively, including a portfolio produced for the book Cry, the Beloved Country, by Alan Paton (New York: C. Scribner's Sons, 1948). Her work has appeared in exhibits throughout the world, including the following: The Lovedu in Pretoria, 1947; The Family of Man (Museum of Modern Art, 1955); Tribal Photographs (Corcoran Art Gallery, 1984; and Go Well, My Child (National Museum of African Art, Smithsonian Institution, 1986).

Summary:
Photographs taken by Judge Emile E.O. Gorlia during five journeys through the Belgian Congo and two vacation leaves, one in Belgium and one in the Canaries Islands, 1909-1928 and at the World Exposition in Brussels (1958). The collection dates from 1909-1958.

His first mission was from January 1910 to January 1912; the second, from February 1915 to March 1917; the third, from December 1917 to April 1920; the fourth, from November 1920 to February 1923 and, the fifth, from March 1926 to December 1928. For his first four missions at Lusambo in the Kasai province, district of Sankuru, Emile Gorlia was acting as an alternate to the public officer at one of the seven tribunals of first instance. During his fifth and final mission, he was promoted as president of the Court at Albertville in the ditrict of Katanga.

Judge E.O. Gorlia was a keen amateur photographer with the advantage of not only traveling extensively around the state but also with the privilege of being able to afford the time and money to produce a prolific number of images. His images illustrate with great detail the full experience of a government official in mission in the Belgian Congo, starting in Antwerp at the pier of this Belgian harbor and taking up his duties at Lusambo, an administrative town in the hearth of th Belgian congo. The majority of images are of the following Belgian Congo districts, Lower Congo, Kassai, Sankuru, and Katanga. They include the cities of Banana, Boma, Matadi, Leopoldville (now Kinshasa), Lusambo, Luebo, Dilolo, Albertville (now Kalemie) in the Belgian Congo, Brazzaville in the French Equatorial africa, Zanzibar, Dar es Salaam, Tabora and Kigoma in tanganyika, Dakar in Senegal, Conakry in Guinea, Freetown in Sierra Leone, Port Said in Egypt and finally Casablanca in Morocco. There are also images of villages scenes and portraits of the Tetela, Songye, Luba, Kanioka, Lunda, Chokwe, Pende, Bangala and Kuba.

Also included are images of the natural environment as the Congo river, the Kasai and Sankuru rivers, the banks of Lake Tanganyika and the savanna-woodland of the western part of the Katanga district as well as as the south part of the Sankuru region.

The photographs document African businesses, cities, industry, landscapes, peoples and resources. The collection documents various locations within Kenya, Tanzania, Congo (Democratic Republic of), Zimbabwe, Uganda and South Africa. Peoples represented include Kikuyu, Maasai, Bangi, Chagga, Ndombe, Poto, Bangala, Zulu, and Kongo peoples. There are many images of agriculture, hunting, making pottery, mining diamonds and gold, church services at a Catholic mission, a gathering of chiefs at a court, a lion-killing ceremony, and war dances. Businesses and industries shown include coffee plantations; the DeBeers Diamond Mine; a diamond mine compound and crushing mill; fishing boats; a hemp plantation; ivory trade; a market; and the stock market.
Scope and Contents:
The photographs document African businesses, cities, industry, landscapes, peoples and resources. Place documented include Moshi Province, Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru, the Serengeti Plain (Kenya), and Zanzibar in German East Africa (now Tanzania); Victoria Falls and the Zambezi River in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe); Cape Town, Devil's Peak, Johannesburg, Kimberly, Natal Province, and Port Elizabeth in South Africa; the waterfront of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania; and Soko, Boma, Leopoldville (now Kinshasa), and Stanley Falls (now Boyoma Falls). There are also photographs of the Nile during a flood.

People portrayed include a Kikuyu man paying brideprice for a wife; Kikuyu women carrying water vessels and planting beans; Maasai women building houses; Swahili people dancing; Swahili women using a power figure to ward off evil; and Zulu men training for war. Other peoples portrayed include Bangala, Bangi, Chagga, Kongo, Ndombe and Poto.

Activities documented include buying ivory, carrying rubber, clearing the ground for a coffee plantation, fishing, gambling, grinding corn, hunting zebra, making pottery, mining diamonds and gold, peeling bark for bark cloth, picking coffee, preparing food, smoking meat, threshing beans, and tying house poles. There are also images of church services at a Catholic mission, a gathering of chiefs at a court, a lion-killing ceremony, and war dances.

Businesses and industries shown include coffee plantations in Rhodesia; the DeBeers Diamond Mine in South Africa; a diamond mine compound and crushing mill; fishing boats off Cape Town; a hemp plantation in Uganda; ivory trade in Mombasa, Kenya; a market; and the stock market in Johannesburg.
Biographical / Historical:
In 1882 the Underwood and Underwood Company began operations in Kansas. Founded by brothers Bert Elias (1862-1943) and Elmer (1860-1947) Underwood, the company pioneered the technique of selling stereographs door-to-door. By 1884, Underwood and Underwood's operations had expanded to the West Coast, and the company soon opened offices throughout the world. In the 1890s, the firm began selling images to publications such as Illustrated London News and Harper's Weekly. At its peak in the early 19th century, the company produced 25,000 images per day.

In the late 1910s, Underwood and Underwood was purchased by a competing stereograph company, the Keystone View Company.

Summary:
This collection, which dates from 1949-1970, contains approximately 2513 color 35mm slides depicting the people, environment and cultures of more than 30 African countries. Images include landscapes, agriculture and marketplace scenes. Countries represented include Algeria, Angola, Benin, Burundi, Rwanda, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, Egypt, Ethiopia, Gabon, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Libya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritius, Morocco, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (Zaire), Cote d'Ivoire and Zambia. Also included in this collection are 117 postcards from West and Central Africa and approximately 17 maps of and 10 guide books for East and West Africa. A small amount of miscellaneous ephemera rounds out the collection.

Biographical/Historical note:
William Adams Hance (1916-2008) was a professor emeritus of economic geography at Columbia University. In the early 1950s, Hance was part of a team of academicians sent by the Carnegie Corporation to Africa, with the intention that they would return and contribute to the education of Americans about the African continent. He taught courses on Africa until his retirement. In 1956, Hance was a founding member of the African Studies Association and he went on to serve on its board as Executive Secretary and President. Hance's publications include six books on Africa, as well as numerous articles. In 1967 he was named Honorary Fellow of the American Geographical Society, and was honored by the Nigerian Society of Geographers for "distinguished contributions to the science of geography in Africa."

Scope and Contents:
Series 1 is comprised of photos taken by Dr. Henry Drewal while traveling in Morocco from May 29, 1997 to June 21, 1997. The series includes images taken in Casablanca, Rabat, Salé, Fès al Bali, Meknès, Sijilmassa, Rissani, Marrakech, and Essaouira. Subjects include architecture, market scenes, craftsmen and artisans at work, musicians, landscapes and city views, ancient sites and museums.

Series 2 is comprised of photographs taken by Dr. Henry Drewal while traveling in South Africa from March 8, 1997 to March 30, 1997. The series includes images taken in Cape Town, Durban, Injasuti, Johannesburg, Lindelani, and Pietermaritzburg. Subjects include political rallies, religious festivals, artists and artist studios, universities, galleries and museums, public murals and sculptures, architecture, rock art sites, and portraits.

Series 3 includes images of art objects belonging to the Drewal-Kahn private collection and paintings by Trevor Makhoba.
Arrangement:
The collection is arranged in three series: Morroco, South Africa, and Art Objects.
Biographical / Historical:
Art historian Henry John Drewal received his BA from Hamilton College and two Masters' degrees and a PhD from Columbia University (1973). In between college and graduate school, Drewal served in the Peace Corps, where he taught French and English, organized arts camps in Nigeria, and apprenticed himself to a Yoruba sculptor.

He taught at Cleveland State University (Chair of the Art Department), and was a Visiting Professor at UC-Santa Barbara and SUNY-Purchase. Since 1991 he has been the Evjue-Bascom Professor of Art History and Afro-American Studies at UW-Madison. He has published several books, edited volumes, exhibition catalogues, and many articles and produced a number of films documenting African and African Diaspora arts, and lectured widely on these topics. He has received several NEH and NEA grants, three Fulbright Research Awards (Brazil, Benin, Morocco), a Metropolitan Museum of Art Fellowship, and a Guggenheim Fellowship.

Images show agricultural work, architecture, carving, cooking, landscapes, mountains, and portraits, among other subjects. Highlights of the collection include Makonde carvers at work in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, Hausa peoples tie dying at indigo dye pits in Kano, Nigeria, and house decorations in South Africa and Lesotho including Bataung houses decorated with stone mosaics.

Summary:
This collection is comprised of photographic and manuscript materials, primarily created by Eliot Elisofon to document his travels and work. The images portray many aspects of African life and culture including agriculture, wildlife, archaeology, architecture, art and artisans, children, cityscapes and landscapes, leaders, markets, medicine, recreation, ritual and celebration, and transportation. The manuscript materials include correspondence, essays, clippings, puobligations, notes, research, and itineraries.
Scope and Contents:
This collection is comprised of circa 14,000 negatives, 30, 0000 slides, 8,000 photographic prints, and 14 boxes of manuscript materials that date from circa 1945-1978.

The photographs document Eliot Elisofon's travels and work in Africa. The images portray many aspects of African life and culture including agriculture, wildlife, archaeology, architecture, art and artisans, children, cityscapes and landscapes, leaders, markets, medicine, recreation, ritual and celebration, and transportation. Artisans shown include an Asante weaver making kente cloth in Ghana; a Dogon carver in Mali making a kanaga mask; an Ebrie goldsmith in Cote d'Ivoire; Hausa dyers in Kano, Nigeria; and Nupe beadmakers in Nigeria; as well as artists at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Kinshasa, Congo. Portraits of leaders include the Asante court at Kumase in Ghana; Ebrie chiefs and notables in Cote d'Ivoire; the timi (king) of Ede, a Yourba town, Nigeria; the emir of Katsina, Nigeria; and the Kuba king and his court in the Congo. There are informal portraits showing children of the Kuba royal court dancing, Fulbe women with gold earrings in Mali, Mangbetu women in the Congo, and Maasai elders in Kenya. Masked dances documented include a Dogon dama festival celebration in Mali, an Igbo festival in Nigeria, and Kuba and Pende masked dancers in the Congo. There are also images of Yoruba gelede (men's association) masks in Nigeria. Non-masked dancers shown include Dan professional acrobatic dancers in Cote d'Ivoire, Irigwe dancers in Nigeria, Mangbetu dancers in the Congo, Mbuti dancers in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Wodaabe men dancing in Nigeria. Events shown include Hausa riders in chain mail during the Independence Day celebration in Katsina, Nigeria. Images of art in situ include ancestral altars in the King of Benin's palace in Nigeria; Dogon rock paintings in Mali; and Yoruba Shango shrine sculptures in the palace courtyard of timi (king) of Ede in Nigeria. Landscapes include views of mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania. Animals shown include birds, buffalos, elephants and giraffes. Traditional architecture shown includes Asante shrine houses with raised wall decorations in Ghana, Dogon villages in Mali and mosques in Mopti.

The manuscript materials include correspondence, essays, clippings, puobligations, notes, research, and itineraries.
Biographical/Historical note:
A photographer best known for his work in Life magazine. Elisofon worked as a free-lance magazine photographer from 1933 to 1937, as a staff photographer for Life from 1933 to 1937 and on photographic assignments for various magazines, including the Smithsonian magazine, from 1942 to 1945. Elisofon traveled extensively in Africa, Asia, Europe and South America documenting the peoples of these lands as well as their arts and environments. A founding member and curatorial associate of the private Museum of African Art, which in 1981 became the National Museum of African Art (NMAfA), Elisofon bequeathed his collection of African photographs to the museum when he died in 1973. To honor Elisofon's contribution to the understanding of African art and culture, NMAfA named its archives after him.
