Original caption reads "Erection in Memory of a Chief hinterland, N.C.P. [Niger Coast Protectorate]." Appears in the W.H. Himbury Photographic Album, EEPA 1995-0024-049. Published in "African Photographer J.A. Green" edited by Martha G. Anderson and Lisa Aronson, page 238-239 with description, "Appears in at least five expatriate albums...Captions describe is as a pagan temple and a 'Juju or Fetish house.' Himbury correctly notes that it was built in memory of a hunterland chief. [Felix] Norman-Roth identifies the chief as King Mneke of Qua Ibo, and [Gertie] Webster names the location as Kiofe. Although she places it near Benin, Kiofe is an Ibibio town."
