At 8,200 feet in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado there is a public garden created in 1985 by the Vail Alpine Garden Foundation. In 1988 the garden was named for former first lady Betty Ford who spoke about her family's love of gardening. The garden has more than 3,000 species of high altitude plants including native Colorado species and varieties that grow at high altitudes in other parts of the world. It contains both mountain plants including many conifers and plants that grow above tree line, technically alpine. Four garden areas were designed: a mountain perennial garden established in 1989, a mountain meditation garden started in 1991, an alpine rock garden since 1999, and a children's garden founded in 2002. There are children's programs coordinated with a local school including an annual butterfly launch for third graders from two counties, and classes in horticultural therapy, along with many other programs. The Gardens are open every day of the year although paths are not cleared in the winter.
The Gardens employs five staff members and volunteers and docents who contribute more than 3,500 hours annually. With a strong commitment to conservation the Gardens works in partnership with the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, Botanic Gardens International and the Colorado Natural Heritage Program. Behind the scenes the work includes the study and conservation of Colorado's rare flora.

Garden of Seymour Nelson on Park Drive near the entrance of the Swedenborgian Community in Glenview, Illinois. The home was demolished in ca. 1994. Nelson was the son of Swain Nelson who was the landscape contractor for the Columbian Exposition of 1893. Swain Nelson's firm was also involved in the development of Lincoln Park and Graceland Cemetery in Chicago. Swedenborgian Park, referred to as "Glenview's Walden," was established in 1894.

General:
el chaparral is located in the Citrus Homes subdivision and Burgess Lateral District of Phoenix, Arizona. Established in 1992, the 3-acre property features desert gardens, perimeter greenery, sculptures, and a view of nearby Camelback Mountain. The name for el chaparral (all lower case) was influenced by the owner's familial connection to the property and the American Southwest.
The garden is connected to the historical agricultural development of the surrounding central Arizona landscape. The property is sited on a former citrus grove, which was supplied water by the historic irrigation canals constructed in 1897. Entering the property one crosses the Burgess Lateral canal and passes behind a high oleander hedge and through the rusted iron gate. A circular crushed granite drive loops around a low, hedge-defined square of lawn whose symmetrical grass pathways radiate in four directions. Centered is a bronze "Snail Boy" Italian fountain within a circular pond, The visual center here is aligned with the 2700-foot peak of Camelback Mountain, about a mile to the north.
Numerous palm trees, cypress, and tree-size pittosporum, bottle brush, and myrtle remaining from the 1930s soften the organic texture of unsheathed brick walls painted a cool and creamy white. The perimeters of the garden are consistently green, with many varieties of tall trees providing both definition and privacy. Ficus, pomegranates, live oaks, and orchid trees fulfill their functions well.
Completing the garden, a gated white brick retaining wall separates the pool area from a lower-level 136-foot by 36-foot lawn that incorporates the entire back third of the property. The south perimeter is bookended on the east and west ends with small stands of citrus trees that memorialize the area's agricultural past. Tree-shaded, beehive-shaped stacked sandstone sculptures created by John V. Long, landscape architect, line the south boundary of the lawn (the west end grove contains real beehives).
North of the east citrus grove are six raised beds planted seasonally with vegetables and flowers. A potting shed complete with compost bins and a chicken coop border the farming plot. Adjacent to it, framing the northeast corner of the front yard, lies a spacious desert garden designed by Christy Ten Eyck called the "Hummingbird Garden." It contains cactus, succulents, rock, and John V. Long sculptures.
The design of the house was completed by Chicagoan Edward Loomis who had been the architect of Camelback Inn. It was completed by the winter of 1938. The property consists of a main house, guest house, garage, carport, and tractor barn, created in a Spanish-eclectic style similar to that of the Inn. It was later remodeled with the assistance of local architect Peter Lendrum.

General:
The first gardens at Las Palmas Altas were the creation of John Rhuart, who noticed similarities in the climates of Arizona and South Africa and brought to Arizona tropical and subtropical varieties he had seen growing in South African gardens. The three acre property on the warmer side of Camelback Mountain was undeveloped until Rhuart moved there circa 1960, building a ranch style house and a swimming pool with glass mosaics of fish on the bottom. Fencing and garden artifacts were brought from his family home in Phoenix as well as 36 mature Mexican fan palms, now 100 feet tall. Boulders from road construction up the mountain were brought to this property and used to build nearly fifty small irregular terraces connected by a descending path. A redwood Japanese teahouse was moved from Phoenix to Las Palmas Altas and sited near the swimming pool. Hedges of oleander and olive protected more sensitive jacaranda, seven species of orchid trees, and 100 bougainvillea plants comprising 67 different species. Brightly colored beds of tropical and subtropical African daisies, anemones, nasturtium and ranunculi were planted in terraces contrasting with plantings of cacti, yuccas, agave and other desert plants.
Since 2002 the current owners have been researching and partly reconstructing Las Palmas Altas, consulting Rhuart family archives and photographs as well as records at the Phoenix Desert Botanical Garden. It took six months to remove 30 tons of overgrown plants and brush but they uncovered rare saguaro seedlings, dragon trees, bougainvillea with 12-inch diameter trunks and enormous agaves. Desert natives, South American cacti and South African aloes are grown now with more modest plantings of colorful annuals. Modern irrigation has been installed where practical in some parts of the garden but hand-watering is still a daily, time-consuming task.
