Summary:

Includes images of excavations in Nevada, including images of Lake Tahoe, the ghost town of St. Thomas, and Pueblo Grande de Nevada, known as Nevada's "Lost City."

Scope and Contents:

The Schellbach collection consists primarily of negatives, photographs, and lantern slides made from 1924 to 1929 on behalf of the Museum of the American Indian, Heye Foundation by Schellbach. The bulk of the materials depict various Museum excavations in Nevada, particuarly at Pueblo Grande de Nevada (known as Nevada's "Lost City') but also St. Thomas, Virginia City, and Mesa House. Related to this body of work are photographs of exhumed antiquities, etc. from Pueblo Grande. The Museum and the state of Nevada apparently co-sponsored these excavations. The collection also includes photographs Schellbach made in 1922 in Guatemala; in 1929 in Idaho, again on behalf of the Musuem, along the Snake River of both the landscape and various petroglyphs he encountered; and in 1930 of Pinckney's Hummock archaeological site. In addition the collection includes several photographs made by Schellbach on September 23, 1923, of Northern Inunaina (Arapaho) men from the Wind River Reservation visiting the Musuem on their way to London.

Biographical/Historical note:

Born in New York in 1887, Louis Schellbach is primarily remembered as the Grand Canyon's chief park naturalist, a position he held from 1941 to 1957. Prior to joining the Grand Canyon staff in 1937, Schellbach worked for the state of Nevada (as state archaeologist), the Museum of the American Indian, Heye Foundation, the Western Museum Laboratory in Berkeley, Aztec Ruins National Monument, and the Department of the Interior Museum. Schellbach died in Tucson, Arizona, in 1971.

Summary:

This collection contains 69 black-and-white acetate negatives taken by Melvin R. Gilmore in 1923-1924. The images depict scenes of everyday life among the Sahnish (Arikara) Indians of the Fort Berthold Reservation in North Dakota.

Scope and Contents:

The Melvin R. Gilmore collection consists of photographic negatives made by Gilmore on behalf of the Museum of the American Indian, Heye Foundation in August 1923 and July 1924 on the Fort Berthold Reservation, North Dakota. The negatives depict the Sahnish (Arikara) engaged in agricultural activities, house building, food preparation (cooking and butchering), building and checking fish traps along the Missouri River, and weaving and potting. In addition there are several views of an apparent traditional buffalo drive. Gilmore identified and recorded the names of several individuals, including Mrs. Sitting Bear, Mr. and Mrs. Four Rings, Mrs. Red Tail, and Shteshta-kata. The catalog numbers include N08694-N08761, N08852, N09420.

The majority of the negatives from July 1924 were destroyed and are no longer a part of this collection. These included catalog numbers N09412-N09419, N09420-N09427. Descriptions of these images are still available.

The acetate negatives are copy negatives made from the original nitrate during a large photograph conservation project at the Museum of the American Indian in the 1960s. There are also contact prints that were made during this project.

Biographical/Historical note:

Melvin R. Gilmore was a noted ethnologist dedicated to the study of the material culture and ethnobotany of Plains Indians. Born in 1868 in Valley, Nebraska, Gilmore graduated from Cotner College in 1903. At Cotner, he taught biology while he completed post-graduate studies at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. In 1909 and 1914, he received a Master's degree and then a doctorate in botany. From 1923 to 1928, Gilmore served on the staff of the Museum of the American Indian and from 1929 to 1939 was the curator of ethnology at the University of Michigan. He authored several books on botany and Native Americans, including his best known "The Use of Plants by Indians of the Missouri River Region."

Summary:

Negatives shot by Francis Gow-Smith over the course of eight months of fieldwork in the Mato Grosso state of Brazil in 1926. Gow-Smith was collecting ethnographic material on behalf of the Museum of the American Indian, Heye Foundation. Indigenous communities photographed include the Parecís (Paressi), Nambikuára (Nambicuara) and Borôro (Bororo) peoples.

Scope and Contents:

This collection includes 41 negatives and 17 copy negatives made by Francis Gow-Smith over the course of eight months of fieldwork in the Mato Grosso state of Brazil in 1926. Indigenous communities photographed during this course of this work include the Parecís (Paressi), Nambikuára (Nambicuara) and Borôro (Bororo) peoples in such places as the Juruena Municipality, Tapirapann, São João (Sao Juan), and the Campo Grande Microgegion. The majority of the photographs are outdoor portraits of community members going about their daily lives though some are posed in groups. Man of these activities revolve around the river such as fishing and bathing. There are also a smaller amount of landscape views which showcase local plants such as the rubber tree and cow tree.

Biographical / Historical:

Francis William Gow-Smith (1894-1939) was an explorer and ethnologist who briefly worked on behalf of the Museum of the American Indian, Heye Foundation. Born in Coldwater, Michigan, Gow-Smith studied at Purdue University and self-financed his first expedition to Brazil in 1922-1923. He returned to Brazil exploring the Karaja and Kayapo territories in 1924, selling many of the items collected from this trip to the Museum of the American Indian, Heye Foundation (MAI). The MAI offered to fund Gow-Smith's next collecting trip to Brazil in 1926. Gow Smith spent those eight months in the Xingu river region and the Mato Grosso province of Brazil making ethnological collections on behalf of the Museum of the American Indian, Heye Foundation. Gow-Smith collected among the Parecís (Paressi), Nambikuára (Nambicuara) and Borôro (Bororo) peoples. Gow-Smith wrote numerous newspaper articles about his travels and was also a member of the Explorers Club. He died in 1939 after several years of poor health. This collection contains 401 photographs (autochromes, negatives, and prints) that were shot by Czech botanist and ethnographer Alberto Vojtech Fric during his expeditions to Central and South America circa 1905-1923.

The photographs depict indigenous peoples of Paraguay such as the Chamacoco (Zamuko), Evueví (Payaguá/Payagua), Enxet (Lengua), Gran Chaco, and Tomaráho (Tumraha), as well as indigenous peoples of Brazil such as the Borôro (Bororo) and the Kadiwéu (Caduveo/Cadioeos/Guaicuru). A small set of photographs also depict totem poles in Alaska.

Photographs of note include autochrome photographs (early color photographs) depicting botanical specimens and objects that Fric collected.

Alberto Vojtech Fric (1882-1944) was a Czech botanist and ethnographer who studied plant life and indigenous peoples in Central and South America.

Scope and Contents:

The John Upton Terrell manuscripts consist of 2 unpublished book manuscripts, Shawnee Chronicle and Frontier Soldier, written by author and historian John Upton Terrell in approximately 1975. His manuscript Shawnee Chronicle provides a history of the Shawnee peoples, their migrations, and their interactions with other Native and non-Native groups up until the early 19th century. Terrell's other manuscript in this collection, Frontier Soldier, chronicles the life of U.S. Army Major General George Crook, known for his involvement in the "Indian Wars" in the decades directly following the Civil War.

Biographical / Historical:

John Upton Terrell was born in 1900 in Chicago, Illinois. During his teenage years he moved west, working first as a ranch hand in Montana, before later becoming a journalist and author in California. Terrell eventually published over three dozen books, many on the history of the Old West and various Native American communities. He died in 1988 at age 87.

Many of John Upton Terrell's published works on the history of Native American peoples are in the collections of the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of the American Indian Library.

This collection consists of 2 tintypes collected by Charles G. Schoewe that depict Potawatomi men from Wisconsin. One tintype depicts Bill Shopodock (1845-1925) circa 1875-1885. The other tintype depicts two men possibly Jim Anishinaba and John Sanko circa 1880-1895. The photographers for these images are unknown.

Biographical / Historical:

Charles Gustav Schoewe was born on September 13, 1887 in Milwaukee, Wisconson. He worked for Middleton Manufacturing Company where he served as a salesman and later a manager. His family included his wife Blanche and his children Jean and William. Schoewe died on November 14, 1970.

Gift of Charles Schoewe to the Museum of the American Indian in 1933.

Scope and Contents:

Tintype circa 1880-1895 depicting two men posing in front of a studio backdrop. One man is listed as Jim Ohneshnabia from Blackwell in the museum's catalog record. This may possibly be Jim Anishinaba who as listed in the 1921 Indian Census Rolls for Potowatomi Indians at Laona Agency in Wisconsin. According to that census, Jim was born 1845 and had a wife Miaotinock (born 1860) and son Charles (born 1892). The 1927 Indian Census Roll indicates that Jim died on October 6, 1926.

The other man depicted in the tintype is listed in the museum's catalog records as John Sanko of Stone Lake. An alternate spelling may be John Sonco. There was a Kansas Potawatomi individual with this name listed in the 1937 Indian Census Rolls for Potawatomi at Laona Agency in Wisconsin, however given his birth date of 1899, it is most likely too late to be the individual depicted in this image. Sonco may however be an alternative spelling for the family name.

Scope and Contents:

This tintype shot circa 1875-1885 depicts Bill Shopodock (Potawatomi) sitting for his portrait wearing a jacket with fur trim and a bowler hat with two feathers. The 1910 census for Wabeno, Forest, Wisconsin lists Shopodock's birth date as circa 1840 and his occupation as a foreman on a farm. It also notes that he was married for 45 years. According to the 1926 Indian Census Rolls for Potawatomi at the Laona Agency, William Shopodock was born in 1845 and died on August 22, 1925. The 1880 census for Waupaca, Wisconsin, the family name is spelled Chabodoc. The original museum catalog records for the tintype listed his last name as Schobedock, which may be another alternate spelling.

According to the publication The Shopodocks: a Potawatomi Indian story by Delores Zillmer Miller, Bill Shopodock also went by the name Soc-qua. His father was Che-pau-dack (Sam Wapuka or Chief Waupaca) and his siblings were Kik-a-pa, Che-wan, Joseph and John. They lived in Dupont Township, Waupaca County, Wisconsin in the 1870s, where this tintype may have been shot.

This collection includes negatives and photographic prints shot or collected at the Pima Indian Agency, now the Gila River Reservation, by Sidney S. Wilson and family members Florence Wilson and Roswell G. Wheeler. Sidney Wilson's sister Florence worked as a teacher at the Agency school during the winter of 1884-1885 while their uncle Roswell Wheeler served as the Indian Agent.

Scope and Contents:

Series 1: Sidney S. Wilson, 1933, includes 10 negatives made by Sidney S. Wilson on his 1933 trip to the Gila River Reservation in Sacaton, Arizona. Wilson met with several of his sister Florence's former Akimel O'odham (Pima) students, including Hugh Patton and Calvin Emerson, and took photographs with them in front of old agency buildings. The photographs with Sidney in the image were likely shot by his wife Anna. Series 2: Roswell G. Wheeler, 1915, includes three photographic prints shot by Ros Wheeler on Easter in 1915. Wheeler had been Indian Inspector of the Pima Indian Agency in the 1880s and returned for a visit in 1915. These include images of Ned Wood and his family and Harvey White and his son. Wood and White were also former students of Florence Wilson in 1884-1885. Series 3: Unknown Photographer, circa 1884, includes eight photographic prints by unknown photographer(s) made around 1884. These images depict school age children, women carrying burden baskets and men on horseback.

Biographical / Historical:

During the winter of 1884-1885, Florence L. Wilson (1861-1920), later Mrs. E.E. Flickinger, taught at the Pima Indian Agency School in Sacaton Arizona. Her uncle, Roswell G, Wheeler, had been appointed Indian Agent by President Garfield and he hired Florence, along with an Aunt to teach at the Agency. During her time teaching, one of Florence's tasks was to assign new English names to her Akimel O'odham (Pima) students in addition to teaching them English. Florence wrote letters home to Indiana during this time which were kept by her mother Hepzibah Beulah Wilson.

Florence's younger brother, Sidney S. Wilson (1865-1950) re-discovered the letters, along with other family keepsakes, and in January 1933 traveled to the Pima Agency in Arizona with his wife Anna to see where Florence taught. Wilson sought out several of Florence's students including Ned Wood, Dick Hull and Hugh Patton. Wilson returned to Sacaton, Arizona in 1936 with a picture of his sister Florence that was to hang in the new school building. In 1942, Wilson donated Florence's letters along with photographs to the Museum of the American Indian, Heye Foundation. The letters are now at Cornell University with the Huntington Free Library collection.

Separated Materials:

The letters from Florence Wilson to her family, initially part of the same donation, were part of the Huntington Free Library collection that were sent to Cornell University. They can now be found here: Correspondence from Pima Indian Agency, Sacaton, Arizona, #9050. Division of Rare and Manuscript Collections, Cornell University Library.

The Indenture of servitude between Charles Paine and Samuel Hamner and William W. Davidson, bound Amy Menice as a servant to William W. Davidson. This agreement states that Amy is to serve faithfully and apprentice with Mr. Davidson until she turns twenty-one years old. In exchange, Mr. Davidson will teach or have someone else teach Amy "the art, trade, and mystery of spinning, sewing and weaving." He is also responsible for providing the servant girl with appropriate food, lodging, and clothing. At the end of her term, Amy is to receive payment for her legal freedom.

Summary:

An exhibition on the presence and contributions of persons of African descent and Muslim heritage in America during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The exhibit presented vignettes of figures - enslaved and free - known for their passion for freedom, pioneering spirit, and faithfulness. Amir N. Muhammad and Collections and Stories of American Muslims, Inc.(CSAM) serve as guest curators for this exhibition held from July 11 to October 16, 2005. These records document the lecture and tour given by Amir N. Muhammad.

This collection contains 244 albumen prints and 87 acetate negatives taken by Rev. L.L. Legters in 1925-1926. The images depict scenes of everyday life among various tribes in Brazil and Bolivia, including the Bororo, the Chiquito, the Nambicuara, the Terena and the Umotina.

Scope and Contents:

The collection consists of photographs and negatives made by Legters from 1925 to 1926 primarily in Brazil but also Bolivia. Legters made these materials while he was working as a missionary, and so he made the majority of the photographs of indigenous peoples while they were gathered at Legters's Brazil mission. The photographs document Nahukuá (Nahuqua), Borôro (Bororo), Nambikuára (Nambicuara), Umutina (Barbados), Terêna (Tereno), Kabixí (Cabichí/Cabishi), and Parecís (Paressi) men, women, and children of Brazil, and the Chiquitano (Chiquito) of Bolivia. These include informal, outdoor portraits of individuals and groups and representations of dwellings and people fishing, canoeing, trading, gathering water, carrying burden baskets, using bows and arrows, etc. Some of the negatives may be later copy negatives.

Biographical/Historical note:

Best known for performing the funeral rites of Geronimo in 1909, Reverend Leonard Livingston Legters (1873-1940) was a missionary. In 1925, he conducted missionary work in the Amazon Basin in Brazil. He later served as secretary of the Pioneer Mission Agency.

Provenance:

Historically, the Museum of the American Indian, Heye Foundation managed all photographic materials separately. This collection description represents current management practices of organizing and contextualizing related archival materials.

This collection contains 4 photographs that depict Josephine Sloan Armstrong (Minnesota Chippewa [White Earth, Minnesota]) and her family circa 1908-1920. The photographs were shot at Lake Winnibigoshish and include depictions of Josephine, Josephine's father William (Bill) Sloan, her mother Charlotte Brunette, her sister Annie Sloan, and her son Thomas Walter (Danny Boy Armstrong). One photograph depicts a group at Leech Lake in Minnesota.

Biographical / Historical:

Josephine Sloan Armstrong (White Earth Band of Minnesota Ojibwe) was born on November 27th, 1888 to William Sloan and Charlotte Brunette. She married Benjamin Henry Armstrong in 1906 and they had eleven children George (born 1907), Anne (born 1908), Thomas Walter (born 1913), Mildred (born 1915), Everett (born 1918), Benjamin (born 1919), Lucille (born 1921), Dorothy (born 1922), and James (born 1927). Two of her eleven children died in early childhood; Earl died in 1910 and Joseph in 1921.

Around the time of her birth, Josephine's father William Sloan owned a land allotment in Wisconsin. The Sloan family later relocated to Northern Minnesota. There, Josephine and her two sisters Anne and Georgette opened a dry goods store and taught local children to read and write. The family eventually sold a portion of their land to the U.S. Government to establish the Chippewa National Forest. Josephine made dresses, which were passed down through her family and worn to many Pow-wows. NMAI now holds the dress in its collection (object 26/6690). Josephine died January 5, 1939 at Cass Lake, Minnesota.

The photographs in this collection were donated along with a Jingle dress made by Josephine Sloan Armstrong (NMAI object # 26/6690).
