Summary:
The Farber collection documents images of celebrated American buildings by photographer Joseph C. Farber.
Scope and Contents note:
The Farber collection is filled with well-crafted and often very beautiful images of celebrated American buildings. Many of the images, which for the most part take the form of 11" x 14" black-and-white photoprints, explore the European Renaissance origins of American architecture. The collection is also very rich in color transparencies. Nearly all the images are directly related to published projects, specifically photo-essays in the shape of articles , many of which appeared in the magazine Antiques or newspapers. Farber probably would have wished for all of his photographs to have been published. Many were shown in exhibitions, as evidenced by the large proportion of the photoprints that are mounted and also the existence of correspondence files relating to such matters. There are also files related to the processes of conceiving, executing, and publishing his photographic work.

The images for the books are nearly all black-and-white, whereas magazine work, especially the commissions from Antiques, generated the most transparencies. In addition to the images in print and transparency form, and the associated proof sheets and negatives, there is also a great quantity of slides related to travel in the collection, which predate Farber's second career as a professional photographer. A tiny sampling of earlier photographs, mostly with artistic or family-and-personal themes, is also included.

Black-and-white negatives, black-and-white prints, and color transparencies, mostly created for specific book projects, articles in Antiques magazine, etc. Generally, color was used for magazine articles, while black-and-white images were intended for books. Collection also includes photographs of personal or family significance, and some early artistic efforts. Non-pictorial portion consists primarily of material related to Farber's publications: correspondence, galley proofs, reviews, etc.

Photographs include projects related to Thomas Jefferson (e.g., Monticello), classical architecture, Essex, Connecticut, etc. Buildings photographed include Raleigh's Tavern, Williamsburg, Va.; Independence Hall, Philadelphia; Maison Carree, Nimes, France; St. Paul's Chapel, Boston, Mass.; White House, Washington; New York City landmarks; sites in Springfield and New Salem, Ill., associated with Abraham Lincoln; historic buildings in Boston and Cambridge,Mass.; Hannibal, Mo.; Deerfield, Mass.; New England churches and meetinghouses; and buildings and objects from ancient Greece, which were published with excerpts from Herodotus' History of the Pelopponesian Wars (Farber called this group of images "Herodotus"); and Italian villas designed by Andrea Palladio, such as the Villa Rotunda. Some pictures relating to themes of democracy were inspired by the U.S. Bicentennial celebration.

Biographical/Historical note:
Born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1902, Joseph C. Farber he attended the New York Military Academy, and later Columbia College, where his formal studies included chemistry and art composition. While these were excellent preparation for subsequent employment in the family business, Friedman Blau Farber, Manufacturers of Knitted Outerwear, at Columbia he discovered the true love of his life, the art and craft of photography. He became involved in the New York Camera Club. For the rest of his life he would consider himself a protégé of the Club's resident guru, famed photographer Edward Steichen. Farber's work was first shown in the Fifth Annual Exhibition of Work by Cleveland Artists and Craftsmen at the Cleveland Museum of Art in late spring 1923, and he taught photography to summer campers. Later, throughout 39 years of employment in the garment business, he continued to enjoy and practice photography, especially in making portraits of good friends. He married Caroline Feiss, also a Cleveland native and a promising watercolor artist. In 1939 the Farber's moved to New York.

According to his daughter, Dr. Joan Farber, her father purchased a large format Linhof field camera during a 1958 visit with his son Thomas in Germany. The Linhof camera front can be shifted to provide corrections for architectural photography which are not possible with smaller cameras. After Joan headed to college the Farbers had time for increased travel. They were accompanied by their daughter on a trip to Greece in summer 1960 which included photographs of herself, an attractive, sophisticated college coed, stylishly dressed and coifed for the occasion, posed on the steps of the Parthenon. A trip to Spain the following year resulted in many dozens of 35mm color images, part of a large group of travel slides.

This was also the period in Farber's life that a whirlwind round-the-world trip was undertaken, with visits to Thailand, Japan, Hong Kong, Hawaii, and California. By the end of the next year, the Farbers were renting as a vacation home a converted button factory in Essex, Connecticut, a former shipbuilding town on the Connecticut River, as a vacation home. Within months Farber had retired from his design and executive responsibilities at the Campus Sweater and Sportswear Company in Manhattan to live for a year in Essex. There were also trips more abroad, particularly to Greece and Egypt, while the Farbers continued to maintain an apartment in New York. Climbing a mountain in Greece in summer 1967, Farber suffered a heart attack, from which he fully recovered.

In 1969 his new career was launched by the publication of Portrait of Essex by Barre Publishers. Local historian Marie Moore supplied the text to accompany Farber's evocative photographs of the ships, shops, shores, streets, and historic structures of this seafaring town. His brother-in-law Carl Feiss, F.A.I.A., furnished the Introduction.

In 1971, Farber and Wendell Garrett published his first Jefferson book, The Worlds of Thomas Jefferson followed by their second, Thomas Jefferson Redivivus Garrett, who edited the Adams Papers wrote the text, with the help of excerpts from the writings of Jefferson himself. The following summer one of Farber's Monticello views was featured on the cover of Antiques. In 1973 Farber was credited with three covers and a frontispiece for the magazine, as well as three photographic essays. The subjects ranged from Sculpture at the Boston Atheneum to The Villas of Andrea Palladio to The Architecture of Lavius Fillmore Garrett introduced Farber to Lincoln scholar Harold Holzer who hired Farber as photographer to help illustrate his Prints of Abraham Lincoln, which appeared in the annual presidents' birthday number of Antiques the next year, February 1974. Some Contemporary Paintings of Abraham Lincoln appeared twelve months later. Three more Lincoln-themed articles appeared in February issues of Antiques in 1978, 1979, and 1980: Sculptures of Abraham Lincoln From Life, George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, and Here Lincoln Lived: New Salem and Springfield, Illinois.

Two more books of Farber's photographs were published in 1975. Democracy's First Struggle was an account of the Peloponnesian Wars in the words of Herodotus, as edited from the Aubrey de Selincourt with translation by Farber. The photographic images dated back to the family trips to Greece in the early 1960s. Native Americans: 500 Years After was published by Thomas J. Crowell in 1975 with text by Michael Dorris. Following Native Americans came a series of exhibitions of photographs from the book including shows at the National Museum of Natural History (Smithsonian Institution), Dartmouth College, and the Cleveland Museum of Natural History .

Also in the mid -1970s a cover story in Antiques entitled "The Architectural Heritage of New York City" led to an exhibition at the Abigail Adams Smith House. In the late '70s two more exhibitions were staged, featuring scenes of local color at the dedication of the East Haddam (Connecticut) Historical Society in the summer of 1979 and showing buildings by Palladio at the Cooper-Hewitt Museum (New York City.)

In 1980 Farber's interior view of a basilica, Palladio's Redentore church in Venice, was featured on the cover of Antiques. The photographs became the subject of a book, Palladio's Architecture and Its Influence authored by architectural historian, Henry Hope Reed.

Harold Holzer organized many joint photographic trips revolving around Holzer's career in the public relations department of Channel 13, New York's public television station. Each summer for four years in succession they set off to diverse spots to make publicity shoots for upcoming special programming. First was Missouri to photograph Mark Twain sites for a dramatization of "Life Along the Mississippi". The next summer they headed to the Berkshires to document The Mount, the home of Edith Wharton in Lenox, Massachusetts, around whose life and work a mini-series in three parts was planned. The summer trip of 1982 was a return visit to Massachusetts to photograph The Street, Deerfield's historic thoroughfare, combined with a side trip across the border to the Robert Todd Lincoln home, Hildene, in Manchester, Vermont.

In 1982 Farber was commissioned by Architectural Digest magazine to photograph the Mark Twain residence in Hartford. Farber and Holzer succeeded in the early to mid-1980s in getting Farber's out-takes from their Channel 13 trips published together with his carefully worded scripts in such periodicals as American History Illustrated and in Antiques & The Arts Weekly. Many of Farber's pictures were printed in articles in Antique Trader, to which Holzer was a regular contributor. In 1983, when Farber turned 80, his color images of the interior spaces of the Metropolitan Club of New York were published in a book by the same name, written by Paul Porzelt. In his travels in the last decade of his life he was often accompanied by family friend Ethel Phillips, including a tour of Great Britain in the summer of 1987. With Mrs. Phillips he at one time had contemplated publishing a book on the historic mansions of the Hudson River. Two other unrealized projects, upon his death in 1994 at the age of 91, were books on the classical architecture of New York City and on the history and daily lives of Hispanic Americans in the United States.

Photographs made as part of Joseph C. Farber's project to document modern American Indian everyday life. Represented tribes include the Acoma, Apache, Blackfoot, Chehalis, Cherokee, Cheyenne, Chippewa, Cocopa, Dakota, Eskimo, Haida, Kiowa, Kutenai, Lummi, Mohave, Mohawk, Navaho, Northern Athabascan, Onandaga, Pima, Pueblo, Quinalt, Seminole, Taos, Tlingit, and Zuni. Subject coverage is broad and varies from tribe to tribe. Included are portraits, as well as totem poles, carving, weaving, pottery, painitng, landscapes, boats and canoes, ceremonial regalia, camps, classes and vocational training, homes and traditional dwellings, construction projects, rodeos and powwows, dances, industries (including lumber), herding and ranching, agriculture, stores and storefronts, cliff dwellings, parades, crab cleaning, fishing, games, health care, legal processes, music, office work, sewing, vending, and a funeral. There are also photographs of R. C. Gorman (and a letter from Gorman to Farber) and Fritz Shoulder (some in color).

The papers reflect Slivka's work with associations and universities to encourage the recognition of crafts as an international and broadly defined art form. The routine business of publishing Craft Horizons magazine and the founding and operation of Craft International magazine are documented by correspondence and subject files. Correspondence is mainly professional with some scattered personal letters. Subject files concern various organizations, individuals and events related to Slivka's work and interests. Among the writings are manuscripts, notes, and research materials for her book about Peter Voulkos; also included are shorter writings on a variety of topics, poems, 2 diaries, lectures and talks. There are many interviews with craftspeople and artists conducted by Slivka and others, some undertaken as research for articles. Photographs include views of Slivka, craftspeople she observed when traveling abroad, and artwork.

Interviews with craftsmen and other artists were conducted by Rose Slivka and others. Peter Voulkos is espcially well-documented. Among the artists interviewed are: Elaine de Kooning, Philip Guston, Jack Lenor Larsen, Louise Nevelson, and David Slivka. Also found are intereviews with John Cage, Stanley Kunitz, and Rose Slivka.

Biographical / Historical:
Crafts expert Rose Slivka (1919-2004) was an editor, educator, and critic in New York City and East Hampton, NY. Slivka edited Craft Horizons magazine from 1957-1979, and then founded Crafts International, which published its first issue in 1980.

Rose Slivka was very active in the American Crafts Council and World Crafts Council, and promoted crafts by participating in conferences around the world, acting as a juror of competitions, writing, and teaching. The author of books and articles about crafts, including the entry on "Handicrafts" in the 1961 edition of Encyclopedia Britannica, Slivka was tireless in her search for information pertaining to crafts of all nations. Her study of the subject was integrated into a strong, far-reaching campaign to include sculpture as a craft and promote crafts on a par with fine art. She was also interested in poetry and taught courses in art criticism at New York University and the New School for Social Research.

Many of Slivka's articles on craft, painting and sculpture have been published in periodicals such as Art in America, Architectural Digest, and The New York Times. Books and exhibition catalogs include The Crafts of the Modern World (1964); The Object as Poet (1976), Renwick Gallery, Washington, DC; Peter Voulkos: A Dialogue in Clay (1978); California Clay (1979), Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; and The Book as Art and Artist (1979), Elaine Benson Gallery, Bridgehampton, NY. Slivka's writings have been translated into at least 7 languages.

Slivka was awarded the National Endowment for the Arts Critics Fellowship in 1976 and between 1980 and 1982 conducted a research project on "Criticism and Scholarship in Modern Craft" also sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts. She was awarded The Rhode Island School of Design President's Fellows Award in 1982, and its highest honor, the Athena Medal. In addition, she served on the boards of directors for several New York City organizations including Clayworks Studio Workshop, New York Experimental Glassworks, and Center for Book Arts.

Following her career as a magazine editor, international speaker on crafts, writer, and educator, Slivka moved to East Hampton, Long Island, where she continued to write poetry and was art critic for The East Hampton Star newspaper.

Rose Slivka's was married to sculptor David Slivka; the couple had 2 children and eventually divorced. She died of heart failure in Southampton, NY, on September 2, 2004.

The Rose Slivka papers were donated to the Archives of American Art by Slivka's daughter, Charlotte Slivka, in 2008 and 2012.

A 5 p. letter from Jean Farley McLaughlin (Mrs. Julien) Levy to Sam Burchell, Senior Editor at Architectural Digest, in which she writes about her late husband and his passion for art. The letter was written to Burchell in response to his request for information relating to the feature Architectural Digest was preparing on the Levy residence in Connecticut. Also included is a color xerox of the article by Calvin Tompkins "The Collectors: A Reflection of Surrealism: The Julien Levy Collection in New England" which appeared in the August 1981 issue of Archictectural Digest.

Summary:
The Parish-Hadley Collection documents the history of the New York City design firm from 1962-1994.Particular emphasis is on Sister Parish (Mrs. Henry Parish II) and Albert Hadley. Magazine clippings from various publications make up the majority of the collection as well as gossip column excerpts about Parish-Hadley or infamous clients. The slides date mostly from the 1980s-1990s and depict some but not all Parish-Hadley projects.

Arranged alphabetically by client, or in lieu of a client name, by project name (There is some overlap in the albums and the album labels are not accurate).
Biographical/Historical note:
Dorothy "Sister" Parish born Dorothy May Kinnicutt in Morristown, New Jersey. Sister is a nickname given to her by her three brothers. She graduated from the Foxcroft School for Girls, an elite Virginia boarding school. She began her career in 1933. It was the year of the "Crash" and financial necessity prompted her to set up shop, "Mrs. Henry Parish II Interiors", in Far Hills, New Jersey, where she began decorating houses for friends. She had no formal training but attributes her taste and instinct for quality to European travel, exposure to art, and, most of all to her upbringing. Alone, and then together with her partner, Albert Hadley, who joined the firm in 1962, she has decorated houses of every size and kind throughout the world. It is said that she represents the "undecorated" look; Vogue magazine calls her "the most famous of all living American women interior designers whose ideas have influenced life-styles all over America."

Sister Parish--grande dame of American decor--shaped the American domestic aesthetic of various Kennedys, Astors, Paleys, and Whitneys. Parish-Hadley was the upper-crust New York firm formed by Mrs. Parish and the Tennessee-born decorator Albert Hadley.

Mr. Hadley, a graduate of and former teacher at Parsons School of Design in both New York and Paris, established his own design firm before joining McMillen, Inc. He began his legendary association with Mrs. Henry Parish II in 1962, when they co-founded the distinguished design firm of Parish-Hadley Associates, which grew to encompass 25 associates and staff members.

Described by The New York Times as "the most illustrious American decorating team of the 20th century," Parish-Hadley's client register includes names of the Kennedys, Rockefellers, Astors, Gettys, Whitneys and Vanderbilts. Parish's cozy, yet dignified style, combined with Hadley's Modernism and attention to architectural space, has led to Parish-Hadley's constant surviving achievement.

The partnership lasted until the death of Sister Parish in 1994. After closing Parish-Hadley in late 1999, Hadley opened a new office and continues collaborating with clients toward his goal to "help them realize more than they thought possible within the framework of their own tastes." His impressive roster of distinguished clients includes former Vice President and Mrs. Albert Gore, Diane Sawyer and Mike Nichols, former Ambassador and Mrs. Henry Grunwald and Mrs. Vincent Astor.

General:
The present owners purchased seven acres of land bordering native cranberry bogs under cultivation. The property was layered with clay and surrounded on two sides by a hardwood forest (unique on Nantucket). After completing the house construction, the owners surrounded the rear with an 8 foot deep pond landscaped with native bayberry and pine; and stocked the pond with koi. A 100x100 foot sunken garden with croquet court exists off the guest wing. This garden is surrounded by a wood lattice fence ending in an arched arbor walk entered through four moongates. Roses, perennials, annuals, and sculpted arborvitae and boxwood fill the borders and cover the fencing. A privet maze surrounds a Grandiflora magnolia outside the garden and leads to a swimming pool area. Terraces in random cut bluestone surround a dark granite pool. A native fern forest grows beneath tupelos in the nearby wetlands. The garden won the Hunnewell gold medal from the Massachusetts Horticultural Society for outstanding design on an estate over seven acres in 1993.

This two-acre garden features a high brick wall designed by noted landscape architect Ethelbert E. Furlong that encloses half of the terrace. This wall has circular "windows" which are now covered by ivy. Behind the southeast wall is a grotto, somewhat overgrown, with dripping water on its rocks. A gazebo was also probably the work of Furlong. The front of the house, which has been enlarged from the original built in the 1880s, has privacy provided by old trees and shrubs.

This is a small woodland one acre garden located on reclaimed farm land. After a visit to the Alhambra, running water features were added between two centrally located boulders. A little fishpond with fountain and water lilies completed the project. The owners included many types of spring flowers to add color to the garden. Ferns later dominate the wildflower paths. The central garden provides color in July and August with lilies, daylilies and hostas.

General:
Parnes and Schneider purchased a property near the road that lacked privacy. Luther Greene created a garden that provided protection from neighbors and the road. Greene built a raised bank along the road and planted it with evergreens and flowering trees. The main plan for the garden was to create a central open lawn with a sequence of small gardens or "rooms." The rooms include a Japanese garden, a cutting garden, a cloister garden, a white garden and a blue garden. Four of the rooms include water features. Waterfalls are a principal feature in the Japanese and the blue gardens. Stones and plantings are the two other most important features in the garden.

General:
Established in 1930, Innisfree was designed and built by Walter Beck, a scholar-teacher-artist who was influenced by ancient Chinese garden art. Innisfree explores a Chinese garden design concept called a "cup garden," which has origins in Chinese paintings dating back a thousand years. The cup garden draws attention to something rare or beautiful. This special object is segregated by establishing an enclosure around it so that it can be enjoyed without distraction. A cup garden may be an enframed meadow, a lotus pool, or a single rock covered with lichens and sedums. At Innisfree the visitor strolls from one three-dimensional picture to another. Streams, waterfalls, terraces, retaining walls, rocks, and plants are used not only to define areas, but also to establish tension or motion. Although the cup garden idea came from China, Innisfree is unequivocally an American garden. The lake is glacial, most of the plant material is native, and the rocks have come from the immediate forest.

Fantasy Island relies on the natural elements of the surrounding woodlands, but uses a formal plan. This organic garden depends on the heavy use of forest sod, blueberry, bunchberry, and huckleberry. The many "rooms" and vistas are used for contemplation and renewal. The owner incorporated a large sculpture collection, objects and use of stone and water features. An Austrian carriage house, dasha, Portuguese pool house, gothic tower, and a Moorish gazebo are some of the other unusual features and buildings on the property. The owners' idea for the garden is to celebrate Maine; and "to also amuse and intrigue [the visitor] with endless variety of ways to see and and enjoy the property."

General:
Reflecting their historic past (the property dates back to an 1807 land grant), the gardens at Richland invite appreciation. Ancient oaks, fragrant of sweet olives, and many early varieties of camellias highlight the plantings. Low-growing remnants of an earlier time include bridal wreath, sweet William, white flags, and an occasional old rose. Bamboo plants of large proportion formerly covered the entire acreage and by tradition attracted birds of all kinds. Today, a small patch of bamboo still occupies a portion of the back garden. Robert Cox, the original builder, had a dream of an extensive park as the setting for his new home. Part of this dream was a beautiful garden as the crowning jewel. Well-kept and lovely in every aspect, Richland today pays tribute to Cox's vision.

Summary:
This collection documents Scheeline's work as a textile designer from 1945-1970.The archive material consists of brochures, photographs, sketches, correspondence, scrapbooks, client records, and other related items that document Ms. Scheeline's career from the 1930s to the 1980s (briefly covers 1990s). A majority of the items deal specifically with the projects for textiles and wallcoverings, research on forms in nature, and notes on her travels.

Materials are arranged in seven boxes as follows: I. design scrapbooks; sketches of textiles and wallpapers; II. Press (photos, articles and releases); exhibition brochures; financial and legal records; client records; misc. correspondence; III. client designs and records; IV. Cooper-Hewitt correspondence; travel sketchbooks; personal photos and correspondence; box of photos and slides (textiles and papers); V. design scrapbook; drawings and sketches; photocopies; William Katzenbach, Practical Book of American Wallpaper; VI. blocking materials; handblocks scrapbook; and VII. large drawings and design records.
Biographical/Historical note:
American artist and textile designer Lanette Scheeline (1910- ) specializes in textile and wallpaper designs, and does custom block-printing for decorators. Scheeline is a Sausalito native, University of California graduate and former student at the Rudolph Schaeffer School of Design. She spent years working in other phases of textile or wallpaper design and all contributed to the background of technique, marketing, public taste and business judgment she needed in her own enterprises. She first gained recognition at the Golden Gate International Exposition (1940). Since then her work has been on view at the de Young Museum, Marin Art & Garden Fair, the Contemporary Gallery in Sausalito, the Merchandise Mart in Chicago, the Mill Valley Outdoor Art Club, the New-York Historical Society, and the Pacific Coast Textile Exhibition (1949, 1950) in the company of Trude Guermonprez and Jack Lenor Larsen among others.

The folders include worksheets, copies of articles about the garden (including a plant list), a garden plan, narrative descriptions, and other information.
General:
Ashland Hollow is a 17-acre stroll garden and has been under development by its owners (one of whom is a landscape architect), with the assistance of other professionals, since 1963. Situated in a hilly stream valley, the garden combines strong design and plants from around the world (80% are non-natives) to create seasonal interest. Ponds and dams, sculpture, a gazebo, a game lawn, a vegetable garden, and a small "test nursery" complement the garden itself. The garden is constantly undergoing fine tuning. Interactive audio features were added in 1998-1999, and plantings are altered to reflect new ideas and changes in conditions.

General:
Doe Run was the home/horse farm/garden of Sir John and Lady Esther (duPont) Thouron. Once known as "Glencoe," it was renamed by Sir John, who was an internationally renowned plantsman and the first to produce a clear yellow clivia. Development of the gardens, which encompassed about 15 acres of the 220-acre estate, began around 1960. Inspired by memories of his native Scotland, Sir John transformed open fields into a series of individual areas including an Alpine rock garden, water features, and English-style cottage gardens (albeit somewhat larger than those associated with the typical cottage). One highlight was a broad, 75-foot-long stone path flanked by herbaceous borders. There were also several greenhouses with orchids and flowers. Unusual plants, such as scarlet willows, a special variety of sweet bay, and new rhododendrons, were acquired from a variety of exotic and foreign sources, including Sir Peter Hutchison's 1978 expedition to China. Sir John passed away in 2007 (Lady Esther had preceded him in 1984). The property was sold in 2008.
