Summary:
Fred Wiseman, along with J. W. Peters and D.C. Prentiss, built a biplane named the Wiseman-Peters. During July 1910, both Peters and Wiseman flew the Wiseman-Peters and the following year Wiseman entered the 1911 Aviation Meet at Selfridge Field, Michigan. On February 17, 1911, Wiseman made the first airplane-carried mail flight officially sanctioned by any local U.S. post office and made available to the public when he carried mail, a bundle of newspapers and a sack of groceries from Petaluma, CA, to Santa Rosa, CA. After the 1911 season, Wiseman gave up flying.

This collection consists of a large scrapbook. Inside the scrapbook are newspaper clippings, correspondence, 1st Day Covers, race tickets, and photographs chronicling both Wiseman's automobile and aviation careers.

Arrangement:
Materials are in the order the donor attached them to the scrapbook. Correspondence is often located within the envelope that is attached to the scrapbook. Some materials are loose and have been left in the arrangement in which they were found, unless a portion of a newspaper article could be matched to its other parts.
Biographical / Historical:
Fred Wiseman (1875-1961) was born in Santa Rosa, California, and after attending local schools he engaged in both the bicycle and automotive businesses. Wiseman won considerable fame racing Stoddard-Dayton cars on the West Coast as well as in the Chicago area. He became interested in aviation after attending the Wright brothers' homecoming celebration in 1909 and the first Los Angeles aviation meet at Dominguez Field in 1910.

After these two events, Wiseman was convinced he wanted to learn to fly and so he returned to his home in Santa Rosa and persuaded Ben Noonan to put up $10,000 to build a plane. Wiseman, along with J. W. Peters and D.C. Prentiss, built a biplane named the Wiseman-Peters. During July 1910, both Peters and Wiseman flew the Wiseman-Peters and the following year Wiseman entered the 1911 Aviation Meet at Selfridge Field, Michigan.

On February 17, 1911, Wiseman made the first airplane-carried mail flight officially sanctioned by any local U.S. post office and made available to the public when he carried mail, a bundle of newspapers and a sack of groceries from Petaluma, CA, to Santa Rosa, CA. (The first air mail flight sanctioned by the U.S. Post Office in Washington, D.C., took place on September 23, 1911, when Earle Ovington carried mail from Garden City, Long Island, to Mineola; and the first continuously scheduled U.S. air mail service began on May 15, 1918, with routes between Washington, Philadelphia, and New York.)

During 1911, Wiseman had an active season of exhibition work, including flying for one week at the California State Fair. However, after this season Wiseman gave up flying because he thought there was no future in it. He sold his plane and returned to the automobile business. He later worked for Standard Oil Company of California. Wiseman was a member of the Early Birds of Aviation, an organization of pilots who flew solo in an aircraft prior to December 17, 1916.

Weldon Cooke, another pioneer aviator from California, bought and modified the Wiseman-Peters aircraft, renaming it the Wiseman-Cooke. Cooke flew the Wiseman-Cooke for exhibition and air mail flights. The Wiseman-Cooke aircraft is currently part of the Smithsonian Institution's collections.

This collection consists of 3 cubic feet of materials relating to Robert Love's career in aviation: both his military career, especially relating to his exploits in the Korean War; and his civilian career, most notably his time as a test pilot with Northrop and his involvement with the Reno Air Races. This collection consists of the following types of archival material: photographs, color slides, 16 mm motion pictures films, U-matic videos, technical manuals, certificates, military records, correspondence, licenses, individual flight records, Northrop publications, and interviews of Love on audio tape cassettes.
Biographical / Historical:
Major Robert J. "Bob" Love (1917-1986) had an impressive military and civilian aviation career. Born in Grand Prairie, Alberta, Canada, his family moved to New York when he was young. Love learned to fly in 1940 and before the United States entered World War II, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force. After the United States joined the war, Love joined the United States Army Air Corps and flew a variety of aircraft, including Lockheed P-38s and North American P-51 Mustangs, but was kept in a training command stateside. Love represented the USAF in the 1947 and 1949 Cleveland Air Races. In the late 1940s, Love left the Air Corps to become a Commanding Officer in the Air National Guard. His unit was activated for the Korean War, and he was eventually transferred to the 4th Fighter Interceptor Wing, where he flew North American F-86 Sabre jets. He flew over 50 combat missions between January - March 1952 and became an ace by shooting down six MiG MiG-15 Fagots. After the Korean War, Love left the military to become a test pilot for Northrop Aircraft where he tested the Northrop F-89 Scorpion, Northrop F-20 (F-5G) Tigershark, and Northrop T-38 Talon. After his stint at Northrop, he spent time in Central America as a mercenary fighter pilot in the wars between El Salvador and Nicaragua, and later tried to establish a rubber tree plantation in Guatemala. He returned to the United States and had a career flying as an executive pilot for a number of firms, including for Golden Industries. In 1964, Love raced a Mustang in the inaugural Reno Air Races; he crossed the finish line first, but lost the championship on points based on previous heats. He continued to be active in the Reno Races and for many years was the official Reno Race Check Pilot, approving new race pilots and recently modified World War II fighter-racers. Love was also active in the western United States air show circuit where he had a featured aerobatic act flying his Mustang P-51D.

This collection consists of approximately 1.44 cubic feet of material pertaining to Clinton A. "Clint" McHenry, Jr.'s career including log books; photographs; correspondence; news clippings; and aviation event posters. The log books are from McHenry's time at Eastern Airlines and date from 1950 through 1968. There are twenty photographs in the collection, both black and white and color prints, that range in size from 8 by 10 inches up to approximately 11.5 by 15 inches. Some are mounted or matted, and many are signed by various pilots. Aircraft pictured in the photographs include the Extra EA230; Sukhoi Su-26; Extra 300S; Mudry CAP 231; Christen Eagle I; de Havilland (Canada) DHC-1A Chipmunk; Taylorcraft BC (BC-65); Loudenslager Laser 200; Pitts S-1T Special; Extra 260; Fouga CM 170 Magister (Schoolmaster); Bücker Bü 133 C Jungmeister, Beverly "Bevo" Howard; Panavia Tornado F.Mk.2 (RAF ADV); and the Pitts S-2A Special. Biographical / Historical:
Clinton A. "Clint" McHenry, Jr. is a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran, commercial airline pilot, flight instructor, and aerobatic pilot who is best known as a three-time National Aerobatic Champion (1986, 1987, 1989). McHenry began flying aerobatics as a young man and served in varying leadership roles for the Aerobatic Club of America and the International Aerobatic Club from 1970 to 1990. He served as a National and International Aerobatic Judge and was also a well-respected instructor and air show pilot whose students included Patty Wagstaff and other champions. McHenry was a captain and instructor pilot for Eastern Airlines for his "day" job from 1950 to 1968, flying a range of aircraft such as the Douglas DC-3, including the example in the National Air and Space Museum's collection; the Martin (Glenn L.) Model 404 (4-O-4); Convair 440 Metropolitan; Lockheed Model 1049 Super Constellation; Douglas DC-7; and the Boeing Model 727. He joined Pompano Air Center (PAC) as Chief Aerobatic Instructor in 1976. McHenry was inducted into the International Aerobatic Hall of Fame in 1993.

This collection consist of Cyrus Bettis' logbook, photographs, correspondence and news clippings that document the Pulitzer Trophy flights as well as Bettis' career as an Army Air Service pilot.
Biographical / Historical:
Cyrus Bettis (1893-1926) was one of the leading Army Air Service pursuit pilots in the early 1920s. Born in Carsonville, Michigan, Bettis entered the Army as a flying cadet in February 1918. He attended the school of Military Aeronautics at the University of Illinois and was sent to Camp Dick, Dallas, Texas in April of that year. He finished his flight training and was commissioned second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Air Service on September 11, 1918. On July 1, 1920, Bettis was commissioned in the Regular Army and promoted to first lieutenant. During the International Air Races in 1924, Lt. Bettis won the John L. Mitchell Trophy Race. Bettis won the 1925 Pulitzer Trophy competition and established a world record of 249.342 miles per hour, flying the Curtiss R3C-2 Racer in its land plane configuration. Bettis was also the backup pilot for the 1925 Schneider Trophy competition, and flew the R3C extensively in its float plane configuration. Bettis, along with Lt. James Doolittle, was awarded the Mackay Trophy for 1925. Bettis died at the Walter Reed General Hospital in Washington DC on September 1, 1926, as a result of injures he received in an aircraft accident on August 23, 1926, when in heavy fog he crashed into a mountainside near Bellefonte, Pennsylvania.

Biographical / Historical:
Clifford W. Henderson (1895 -1984) was an aviation promoter and showman who managed the annual National Air Races from 1928 until 1939, bringing attention to the expanding field of sport aviation. Born in Iowa, Henderson graduated from the University of Southern California in 1917 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He served in the 35th Ambulance Unit, France, during World War I, before transferring to the 101st Aero Squadron where he learned to fly. After the war, Henderson returned to California and was chairman of ground arrangements for the departure and return of the Army's Around the World Flight in 1924 from Clover Field. In 1928 he became Director of Aviation of Los Angeles and served as the first manager of the Los Angeles airport system. Also in 1928 Henderson became director of the National Air Races and was responsible for interesting industry leaders in competition trophies, including the Thompson, Bendix and Grieve Trophies. He retired from managing the National Air Races in 1939. Henderson served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, rising to the rank of colonel. He played an instrumental role in planning the Burma Hump air route, and also served as military governor of Dakar in North Africa. After the war, Henderson was suffering from illness and injuries sustained in Africa, and so went to recuperate in California where he founded Palm Desert, California. He remained active in the Palm Desert community until his death in 1984.

Summary:
This collection contains two scrapbooks and the personal papers of Dr. Paul Studenski, an early aviator who flew from 1910-1913. Born in St. Petersburg, Studenski studied law and medicine before earning the 292nd license from L'Aero Club de France. He immigrated to the United States in 1911 and exercised his prodigious flying skills as instructor, test pilot and exhibition pilot before retiring from flying to distinguish himself in the fields of economics and government service.
Scope and Content:
The Paul Studenski Collection (accession 1989-0012) contains approximately one cubic foot of material relating to the aviation career of this early pilot.

Biographical/Historical note:
Paul Studenski was born November 13, 1887 and raised in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Possessed of great intellectual talent, Studenski studied law at the University of Saint Petersburg, Russia, from which he graduated in 1908. He then attended the Sorbonne in Paris for a year, where he became a medical student. Paris was then a particularly exciting place for a young man of energy and curiosity and after Louis Blériot flew the English Channel in 1909, Studenski's plans for the immediate future dramatically changed. He soon suspended his academic coursework and spent his entire inheritance in learning to fly.

Studenski enrolled at L'École Blériot in Étampes, France. He first soloed on November 8, 1910 and received the 292nd license from L'AŽro Club de France. After flying the experimental monoplane Gremaud at Pau throughout the winter of 1910-1911, he immigrated to the United States, where he showed himself to be an extremely versatile pilot, skilled with vastly dissimilar types of aircraft. After a stint of barnstorming, he accepted employment with the National Aeroplane Company, operating out of Galveston, Texas and Cicero, Illinois. For National, he served as instructor, test pilot and exhibition pilot. On March 17, 1912, he carried the first authorized mail in Texas, indeed the first air mail carrying flights in the South. In 1913, Studenski signed on with the Silver Lake Aviation Company, operating near Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio.

Later that year, Studenski acceded to his wife Ester's request and retired from aviation. Although his aviation career spanned only four years, these were marked by skill and sound judgement.

Studenski returned to academe, attending New York University between 1915 and 1917. The next year he entered Columbia University, where he received a doctorate in 1921. The following years were spent in a highly regarded career in teaching and government service. He was to serve as Professor of Economics at New York University for many years, from 1927 to 1955. He followed this with a two year tenure as Director of the Albany Graduate Program in Public Administration. Subsequently, Paul Studenski served as Professor Emeritus of Economics at New York University and devoted more of his efforts to consulting work, advising many entities, including municipal commissions, various state and city governments, federal agencies and private organizations. Both President Franklin Roosevelt and New York Governor Thomas Dewey were to thank him for his efforts. Among the many books he authored were The Income of Nations and Financial History of the United States.

Paul Studenski was the a member of several associations relating to his careers in aviation and economics, including the Early Birds of Aviation, Inc. and the Long Island Early Fliers Club.

This accomplished pilot flew, during four scant years, Curtiss, Nieuport and Farman machines, the Beech-National biplane (at the time the largest airplane in the United States) and several Blériot models, including Earle Ovington's U.S. Air Mail Carrier No. 1. Paul Studenski, a gentle and accomplished man, pioneer aviator and fiscal expert, died November 2, 1961, while browsing in a bookstore.

Summary:
In 2002 Betty Skelton donated a collection of materials outlining her career as an aviatrix and race car driver to the National Air and Space Museum. The donated material consists primarily of news clippings, pamphlets, magazines, photographs, and scrapbooks covering the span of Ms. Skelton's career.

Arrangement:
The collection has been divided into three series. The first series contains information on Betty Skelton's personal life, including birth and wedding announcements and family photos. The second, pertaining to her professional life, spans a broad range of materials covering the various careers pursued by Ms. Skelton. The third series consists of oversized items such as scrapbooks and large format magazines. Each series is further divided by format (i.e. news clippings, brochures, and photographs) and then chronologically.

Biographical / Historical:
Betty Skelton Frankman, noted aviatrix, automobile test driver, race car driver, and business woman, was born in 1926 in Pensacola, Florida. Her interest in aviation was kindled at a young age while watching Navy stunt pilots practice. Soon, she and her parents began taking flying lessons and Betty soloed for the first time at age 12, four years before the legal age. As soon as she was legally able, age 16, Betty got her pilot's license. At age 19 she joined the Civil Air Patrol while also working as a flight instructor at her father's aviation school. She began a professional career as an aerobatic pilot in 1946, flying a 1929 Great Lakes 2T1A biplane. In 1948, while flying that aircraft, Betty won her first International Aerobatic Championship for Women. She would repeat this achievement in 1949 and 1950 while flying a Pitts-Special S-1C that she nicknamed "Little Stinker." By 1951 Betty realized that she had gone as far as a woman could go in aviation and retired.

Through a chance meeting with Bill France, the founder of the National Association of Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR), Betty began a second career as a test and race car driver. She set multiple land speed records and two transcontinental speed records. Her work with Dodge and Chevrolet led her to her next career as an advertising executive for Campbell-Ewald Advertising Agency, the firm that handled Chevrolet advertising.

In 1959, Betty was given the opportunity to train with the original Mercury 7 astronauts. She completed the same physical and physiological tests as the astronauts, but knew a woman was not destined to be the first American in space. The experience resulted in only a cover story in LOOK magazine (Vol. 24 No. 3 Feb. 2, 1960). In 1965, Betty married Donald Frankman and, eventually, the two moved to Florida and started a real estate business.

Betty held more combined aviation and automotive records than any other person. Her aviation achievements included: a world speed record for piston engine aircraft (unofficial), two light plane altitude records, and three international aerobatic championships. Her achievements in the automotive field included a women's closed course speed record (144.02 mph), a speed record for 200-249 cubic inch piston displacement (105.8 mph), a 24-hour stock car endurance record, a transcontinental record New York to Los Angeles (56 hrs 58 mins.), four land speed records, a South American transcontinental auto speed record, and multiple Bonneville Speed and Endurance Records.

She was also inducted into many halls of fame including, the International Aerobatic Hall of Fame, the NASCAR International Motorsports Hall of Fame, the Corvette Hall of Fame, the Tampa Sports Hall of Fame, and the Florida Women's Hall of Fame. In 1985, Betty and Don donated her Pitts Special "Little Stinker" to the Smithsonian Institution's National Air and Space Museum (NASM). It currently hangs at the entrance to NASM's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center at Dulles, Virginia. Betty and her second husband, Dr. Allan Erde, retired to The Villages, Florida, a popular retirement community where many residents use golf carts to get from place to place. But Betty, in keeping with her moniker as the "fastest woman on Earth," drove a bright red Corvette convertible. She died at her home on August 31, 2011, at the age of 85.
