Summary:
United States Women in Aviation 1940-1985, by Deborah G. Douglas, was published in 1991 as part of the Smithsonian Institution Press series on women in the aviation industry. This collection consists of a variety of different types of material compiled during the author's research for the book.
Scope and Contents:
This collection consists of a variety of different types of material compiled during the author's research for the book. Included are: various types of correspondence; photographs; newspapers and other publications; photocopies of book chapters and magazine and newspaper articles; working notes belonging to the author; reports (official and personal); interview transcripts; and approximately 600 bibliographic note cards. Also included are 10 cassettes containing interviews with the following aviators: Ann Carl, Toby Felker, Nancy Fitzroy, Margaret Hoffman, Jean Ross Howard, Lt. Beth Hubert, Lt. Col. Yvonne C. Pateman, Janet Rassmussen, Lynn Rippelmeyer, and Mary F. Silitch.

Note: The digital images in this finding aid were repurposed from scans made by an outside contractor for a commercial product and may show irregular cropping and orientation in addition to color variations resulting from damage to and deterioration of the original objects. In addition, images of some material in the collection have been excluded from online display due to possible copyright restrictions.

United States Women in Aviation 1940-1985, by Deborah G. Douglas, was published in 1991 as part of the Smithsonian Institution Press series on women in the aviation industry. The publication documents the stories of women involved in all aspects of aviation during this time period, from pilots and engineers, to aircraft industry personnel and flight attendants.

Summary:
This collection consists of 125 black and white photographs that Cecil Tucker collected during his tenure at the Curtiss-Wright Corporation. The photographs include the following Curtiss-Wright aircraft: the Curtiss-Wright Robin, including "Wrong-Way" Corrigan's aircraft; the Curtiss-Wright Kingbird, built for the Marine Corps; the Curtiss-Wright Condor, including images of the Condor T-32 built for the Byrd Antarctic Expedition, the two Condors modified for the Navy for use by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, as well as the Condors sold to Eastern Airlines, Switzerland, and Argentina; and the Curtiss-Wright AT-9, CW-19R, and CW-22B. Famous individuals pictured include: Amelia Earhart, Douglas "Wrong Way" Corrigan, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Lowell Thomas, the famous radio broadcaster. Also of interest are severala few images of aircraft with Latin and South American insignia.

Biographical / Historical:
Cecil Tucker worked for Curtiss-Wright Corporation, Lambert Field, St. Louis, Missouri,from 1928 until 1945. Tucker started as a wire man and worked his way up to the Assistant Superintendent of Factory Administration for the St. Louis plant.

Due to the small size of this collection the papers are arranged as one series.
Biographical / Historical:
Edna Reindel (1894–1990) was a painter, illustrator, and sculptor active from the 1920s to the 1960s. Born in Detroit, Michigan she studied at the Pratt Institute in New York and had her first solo exhibition in 1934 at the Macbeth Gallery. Reindel is best known for her work in large-scale murals, New England landscapes, and later for her commissioned work of women workers in WWII shipyard and aircraft industries as published in Life magazine in 1944.
Separated Materials:
The Archives of American Art also holds material lent for microfilming (reel 1205) including correspondence, primarily with Robert Macbeth, Homer Saint-Gaudens, Frank Crowninshield, Louis M. Eilshemius, Juliana Force, Karl Free, Greer Garson, Stanley William Hayter, Roland McKinney, Vincent Price, Benita Hume Colman (Mrs. George Sanders), and Ernest Watson. Also included is a WPA contract and related letters from Olin Dows and Edward B. Rowan, a transcript of a radio interview, and a portrait of Reindel by Elizabeth Taylor as a child. There are book illustrations, printed material, autographs of prominent individuals such as Douglas Fairbanks and Hedda Hopper, and an autographed photo of Greer Garson. Loaned materials were returned to the lender and are not described in the collection container inventory.
Provenance:
The papers of Edna Reidel on reel 1205 were lent for microfilming by Reindel in 1977. The unmicrofilmed material was donated in 1991 by Reindel's estate through executor and friend, Pauline Davidson.

Biographical / Historical:
In 1916 the Wright Company merged with the Glenn L. Martin Company to form the Wright-Martin Aircraft Corporation. Wright-Martin was initially located in New Brunswick, New Jersey and in 1918 a second factory was opened in Long Island City, New York. The company produced aircraft, including the Wright-Martin Model R and Wright-Martin Model V. Wright-Martin also held the American license to produce Hispano-Suiza engines, the demand for which increased dramatically during World War I causing the company to shift focus to engine manufacture. Wright-Martin was dissolved in 1919.

Daisy Mae Miller (1894-1977) worked for Wright-Martin Aircraft Corporation in their Long Island City facility.

Summary:
This scrapbook consists of newspaper clippings and photos of James V. Martin's aviation exploits, 1910-1916. of the 1910 - 1916 era.
Scope and Contents:
This collection consists mainly of newspaper clippings, and photos of his exploits of the 1910 - 1916 era. Among these are his proposed crossing of the Atlantic in 1912, aerial bombing demonstrations, invention of the Martin Aerodynamic Stabilizer, and early form of autopilot. Also included are newspaper clippings of his wife, Lilly Irvine Martin, who was reported to be the first woman aviator to fly solo.

Biographical / Historical:
James Vernon Martin (1885-1956) was an aviator and inventor during the early days of aviation. He joined the Merchant Marine (1900) before attending the University of Virginia and Harvard (graduate degree, 1912). While at Harvard he organized the Harvard Aeronautical Society (1910), served as its first director, and, through the Society, organized the first international air meet in the United States (1910). He traveled to England in January 1911 for flight training and received Royal Aero Club F.A.I. Certificate #55. After returning to the U.S. in June 1911, he traveled the exhibition circuit (1911-13) before rejoining the Merchant Marine as commander of USS Lake Frey (1914). During 1915 he flew flight test for the Aeromarine Co. In 1917, he formed the Martin Aeroplane Company in Elyria, OH on the strength of nine aeronautical patents, including his automatic stabilizer (1916) and retractable landing gear (1916). In 1920 he moved the concern to Dayton, OH as Martin Enterprises and offered free use of his patents to the American aeronautical industry. He moved to Garden City (Long Island), NY in 1922, called the company the Martin Aeroplane Factory, and, two years later, sued the United States government and the Manufacturers Aeronautical Association, claiming that they conspired to monopolize the aviation industry. The suit was dismissed in 1926, but Martin continued to press his claims of collusion through the 1930s. During World War II he again returned to the sea, commanding a troop transport in the Pacific. Afterwards he tried to raise interest in a large catamaran flying boat, the Martin 'Oceanplane', but failed in the face of the growth in commercial trans-ocean service by conventional aircraft.

Summary:
This collection consists of two scrapbooks. The smaller scrapbook contains certificates, newsletters, photographs, silhouettes, small paintings, correspondence, and articles regarding both Brown and the Martin-Nebraska plant. The larger scrapbook contains oversized photographs and drawings of the B-29. The drawings were drawn by Brown.
Scope and Contents:
This collection consists of two scrapbooks. The smaller scrapbook contains certificates, newsletters, photographs, silhouettes, small paintings, correspondence, and articles regarding both Brown and the Martin-Nebraska plant. The larger scrapbook contains oversized photographs and drawings of the B-29. The drawings were drawn by Brown.

Each album is in its own box which has been selected based on size so that it can be safely housed.
Biographical / Historical:
Julie Brown was one of the artists in the Photo-Art Department at the Glenn L. Martin - Nebraska Company during World War II. Brown studied at both the Rhode Island School of Design and the Art Students' League in New York. During World War I, she worked in the American Red Cross' Hospital Hut Service in France. In this capacity, Brown made silhouettes of soldiers in the various hospitals. After returning to the United States, her art appeared in magazines, newspapers, shows and exhibitions. After World War II started, Brown completed engineering drawing courses at Omaha University and began work at the Martin-Nebraska Company in 1943 as a production illustrator. The Martin-Nebraska Company produced Martin B-26 and Boeing B-29 aircraft during the war.

This collection consists of fourteen 11 by 14 inch four-color halftone offset litho prints showing various models of Lockheed aircraft. The collection also contains thirteen 8 by 10 inch black and white photographs also showing Lockheed aircraft, as well as one photograph that shows Lockheed employees. Aircraft depicted in the collection include Lockheed F-80 Shooting Star; Lockheed P2V (P-2) Neptune Family (various models); Lockheed TV-2 (TO-2, T-33B) Shooting Star; Lockheed C-121 Constellation/Super Constellation Family (various models); Boeing B-47B Stratojet (built by Lockheed's Georgia Division); Lockheed XF-90; Lockheed XR6O-1 (XR6V-1) Constitution; Lockheed F-94C (F-97A) Starfire; Lockheed WV-1 (PO-1W) Super Constellation; and what appears to be an artist's model for an early version of the Lockheed C-130 Hercules. People depicted in the collection include Lawrence D. McKinley; Harold Harrison; Jack Griffin; Ross Tyree; and Paul Schweich.

Biographical / Historical:
Lockheed, started as Loughead Aircraft Manufacturing Company in 1916 by brothers Allan and Malcolm Lockheed (originally Loughead), achieved success with such aircraft models as the Vega; Electra; P-38 Lightning; and later the U-2 and SR-71 (Blackbird) as well as many other civilian, military, and transport aircraft. Lawrence D. McKinley started with Lockheed in 1939 as a final assembly installer and later worked on such projects as the P-38, logistics support with the Japanese Air Force, and the Lockheed L-2000 (SST Proposal). McKinley was named Configuration Manager of Lockheed's SST program in 1965 and retired from Lockheed in early 1967.

This collection contains materials relating to Aerocar, Inc. including correspondence to shareholders, which contains financial information, from Moulton B. "Molt" Taylor (president); a letter to Mr. and Mrs. Dickson Porter Hill (shareholders) from Theolynn Aune (wife of Harold Aune, one of the company's directors) discussing procurement of a contract for production of the Aerocars; a news clipping; an advertisement for a scale model Aerocar toy; and two stock certificates for five shares each.

Biographical / Historical:
Aerocar, Inc. was founded by Moulton B. "Molt" Taylor to produce the Aerocar aircraft he designed. The company was officially incorporated in 1951 and Taylor received official Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) Type Certificate approval for the Aerocar in 1956. Taylor then began searching for a manufacturer for the Aerocar. A contract was signed in 1961 with Ling-Temco-Vought, but it ultimately fell through. Some examples of the Aerocar were built and used as demonstrator models, but the aircraft never entered production.

This collection contains drawings and preliminary analysis studies of the PT-6, PT-4, GA-21, PT-6F, GA-60, GA-36, GA-50, and an Experimental Observation and Training Airplane.
Biographical / Historical:
The Cunningham-Hall Aircraft Corporation was created in 1928, with Francis E. Cunningham as President and Randolph F. Hall as 2nd Vice President and Chief Engineer. The company did not produce any aircraft from 1931-1934, and 1940-1945. The PT-6, a six-place all-metal cabin biplane, was built from 1928-1930. A four-seat version of the PT-6, the PT-4 was never constructed. During 1935, Cunningham-Hall reemerged to produce the GA-21M, a two-seat monoplane. The GA-21M was based on a high-lift wing design the company had entered in the 1929 Guggenheim Safe Aircraft Competition. A similar version, the GA-36, was introduced in 1936. The next Cunningham-Hall model was the PT-6F, the cargo version of the earlier PT-6. This cargo plane was built only in 1939; by 1940, Cunningham-Hall was involved in defense contract research rather than aircraft production.

Biographical/Historical note:
Glenn Hammond Curtiss (1878-1930) is best known as an aviation pioneer and inventor and founder of the Curtiss Aeroplane and Motor Co. Initially a bicycle repairman and designer, by 1902 Curtiss had begun to manufacture motorcycles using a lightweight internal combustion engine of his own design and founded the Curtiss Manufacturing Co. By 1904 Curtiss' engine had been co-opted by Thomas Baldwin for his airship experiments. This activity led to a connection between Curtiss and Alexander Graham Bell and, in 1907, to the foundation of the Aerial Experiment Association. In 1909 Curtiss joined with Augustus M. Herring to form the Herring-Curtiss Co to manufacture powered vehicles, but Herring's unsubstantiated claims to priority over the Wright Brother's aeronautical patents led to the Wright and Curtiss patent suits which continued until the merger of Curtiss Aeroplane and Motor with Wright Aeronautical in 1929. Curtiss and Herring split after the Wright's filed suit and Herring sued Curtiss, claiming that Curtiss had failed to turn his air race winnings over to the company. Despite these, and other, suits, Curtiss continued to advance the cause and technology of aviation, founding the first public flying school (1910) and later a chain of schools across the US, inventing the aileron (1909), the dual-control trainer (1911) and the hydroaeroplane (1911). In 1920 Curtiss retired from active aviation pursuits. After Curtiss died, his wife continued the legal fight on her husband's behalf until a judge decided in Herring's favor (1931).

Scope and Contents:
The Curtiss-Wright Corporation Archives - Patent Files collection consists primarily of materials relating to patents issued to and maintained by the Curtiss-Wright Corporation and its subsidiaries from the 1910s to the 1950s, though the bulk of the materials pre-date World War II. The majority of the collection is original patent certificates. Other materials include records of litigation proceedings, correspondence, memoranda, aircraft drawings and blueprints, reports, sales brochures, meeting minutes, and annual reports.
Arrangement:
The collection is arranged in four series: Patents, Patent File Wrappers, Patent Litigation, and Curtiss-Wright Corporation Records. Series I contains original patents and related materials issued or assigned to the Curtiss-Wright Corporation and related organizations. Covering the years between 1911 and 1939, the series is further divided into two subseries: United States Patents and International Patents. Series II consists of file wrappers prepared by the United States Patent Office, containing a complete record of the patent's history. The third series includes materials from Curtiss-Wright's numerous litigation proceedings in defense of its patents. The fourth series contains business records created by the Curtiss-Wright Corporation including photocopies of historic patent and stock documents, division minutes, and reports for the U.S. Navy Department.

Historical Note:
The years before World War I were spent in patent litigation for aviation pioneers Glenn Curtiss and Orville and Wilbur Wright. The Wright brothers claimed wing warping patents and sought to prevent Curtiss and others from manufacturing and selling aircraft and products based on these patents. During World War I, the aircraft manufacturing industry set up the Manufacturer's Aircraft Association, a patent pool in which all participants were allowed to use any patents to build aircraft for the war effort. After the war, Wright Aeronautical Corporation and the Curtiss Aeroplane and Motor Company continued to be major players in the aircraft industry, long after Curtiss and the Wrights ended association with their namesakes.

In 1929, the Curtiss Aeroplane and Motor Company merged with the Wright Aeronautical Corporation to form the Curtiss-Wright Corporation. After the merger, responsibility for engine and propeller manufacture was consolidated under the Wright name while Curtiss concentrated on airplanes. Although the two companies were merged by name and under the direction of a corporate headquarters located in New York City, the separation and specialization of the two divisions continued to cause problems for the company. The election of former Wright personnel to key corporate positions soon led to Wright becoming the dominant division. The Great Depression and the collapse of the market for commercial aviation revealed how reliant the aviation industry was on military production. Sales dropped and Curtiss-Wright was forced to close certain satellite plants and transfer some of their product lines to the St. Louis facility.

During the U.S. military build-up prior to World War II, existing Curtiss-Wright plants were expanded and new aircraft factories were built to meet the growing production demand. The company failed, however, to plan for the future after the war. In 1946, Curtiss-Wright had only two experimental military models at hand for postwar delivery and no assurance of production orders. Wright Aeronautical continued to build engines, but was no longer at the forefront of development. The eventual sale of the Airplane Division to North American included design rights to the former Curtiss-Wright airplanes. The Curtiss-Wright Airplane Division, which manufactured airframes, finally closed down in 1951.

The Curtiss-Wright Corporation still exists in the 21st century, but has become a diversified technology corporation in various markets, including aviation and defense.

This collection consists of material gathered by Towle to support his claim as the designer of the Ford Tri-Motor. The material consists of the following: newspaper and magazine articles; pamphlets; photographs pertaining to the history of the aircraft and its role in early air transportation; drawings; early flight test reports; technical notes relating to early Tri-Motor models; a short autobiography and resumeof Towle; and assorted postcards, stamps, articles, and so forth relating to Island Airways, an airline still flying Ford Tri-Motors
Biographical / Historical:
Thomas Towle (1897- ) was a mechanical engineer and main designer of the Ford Tri-Motor. Following graduation from Yale University (1920) Towle worked as an engineer for a number of aircraft companies, including Dayton-Wright (1921-22), Martin (1922-23), Aeromarine (1923-24), and Stout Metal Airplane Co (1924-25) before joining Ford Motor Company's Airplane Division (1925-27). While at Ford, Towle designed a three-motored aircraft to replace the Stout 'Air Pullman:, the rights to which Ford purchased with Stout in 1925. Towle left Ford in 1927 to form his own company, Towle Marine Aircraft (1927) and Towle Aircraft Company (1928-32). In 1933 Towle joined Monocoupe and later moved to Lambert Aircraft (1933-35) before leaving the aircraft industry.

This collection consists of material documenting Martin's life. The material includes letters, photos, and documents relating to his Merchant Marine career and his aircraft and aeronautical inventions. Also included are documents pertaining to his conspiracy charges against the government and aircraft industry.
Biographical / Historical:
James Vernon Martin (1885-1956) was an aviator and inventor during the early days of aviation. He joined the Merchant Marine (1900) before attending the University of Virginia and Harvard (graduate degree, 1912). While at Harvard he organized the Harvard Aeronautical Society (1910), served as its first director, and, through the Society, organized the first international air meet in the United States (1910). He traveled to England in January 1911 for flight training and received Royal Aero Club F.A.I. Certificate #55. After returning to the U.S. in June 1911, he traveled the exhibition circuit (1911-13) before rejoining the Merchant Marine as commander of USS Lake Frey (1914). During 1915 he flew flight test for the Aeromarine Co. In 1917, he formed the Martin Aeroplane Company in Elyria, OH on the strength of nine aeronautical patents, including his automatic stabilizer (1916) and retractable landing gear (1916). In 1920 he moved the concern to Dayton, OH as Martin Enterprises and offered free use of his patents to the American aeronautical industry. He moved to Garden City (Long Island), NY in 1922, called the company the Martin Aeroplane Factory, and, two years later, sued the United States government and the Manufacturers Aeronautical Association, claiming that they conspired to monopolize the aviation industry. The suit was dismissed in 1926, but Martin continued to press his claims of collusion through the 1930s. During World War II he again returned to the sea, commanding a troop transport in the Pacific. Afterwards he tried to raise interest in a large catamaran flying boat, the Martin 'Oceanplane', but failed in the face of the growth in commercial trans-ocean service by conventional aircraft.
