Summary:
This collection consists of first day air mail covers collected by pilot and philatelic enthusiast Basil Lee Rowe, predominantly during his career as an airline pilot for Pan American Airways (PAA) in the Caribbean area in the period 1927-1931. Collection includes covers carried by Charles A. Lindbergh in his Ryan NYP "Spirit of St. Louis" during his tour of the Caribbean in February 1928, and covers autographed by many of the early airline pilots who carried them, including Cy Caldwell, Edwin Musik, Caspar D. Swinson, Charles R. Parmelee, and Rowe himself.
Scope and Contents:
This collection consists of first day air mail covers collected by Basil Rowe, predominantly during his career as a pilot in the Caribbean area. Most of the air mail was carried by West Indian Aerial Express (WIAE) or Pan American Airways (PAA) between Florida and islands in the Caribbean or Caribbean ports in Central and South America. Some of the first day covers are autographed by the pilots of the flights (including Cy Caldwell, Edwin Musik, Caspar D. Swinson, Charles R. Parmelee, and Rowe himself) or other noted aviators such as Dean C. Smith, or public officials such as Theodore Roosevelt III, then Governor of Puerto Rico. One group of covers were carried by Charles A. Lindbergh in the Ryan NYP "Spirit of St. Louis" during his tour of the Caribbean in February 1928. Following the covers is an annotated price list; note that not all items listed are part of this collection. Also included at the end of the collection are PAA forms used by two non-PAA pilots for flights inbound to Miami, Florida, from Havana, Cuba, in July 1931: James Goodwin Hall in his Lockheed Altair "The Crusader" (r/n NR-15W), and Frank M. Hawks in his Travel Air Mystery Ship "Texaco 13" (r/n NR-1313).

Biographical / Historical:
Basil Lee Rowe (1896-1973) enjoyed a long and successful career in aviation, initially as a military exhibition pilot, barnstormer, air racer, charter operator, flight instructor, aircraft salesman, and rumrunner, before moving to the West Indies to start an airline, the short-lived West Indian Aerial Express, bought out by Pan American Airways in 1928. Rowe became a pioneering senior pilot for Pan Am, flying with them for 28 years before his retirement in 1956.

Scope and Contents:
This collection consists of material gathered by Towle to support his claim as the designer of the Ford Tri-Motor. The material consists of the following: newspaper and magazine articles; pamphlets; photographs pertaining to the history of the aircraft and its role in early air transportation; drawings; early flight test reports; technical notes relating to early Tri-Motor models; a short autobiography and resumeof Towle; and assorted postcards, stamps, articles, and so forth relating to Island Airways, an airline still flying Ford Tri-Motors
Biographical / Historical:
Thomas Towle (1897- ) was a mechanical engineer and main designer of the Ford Tri-Motor. Following graduation from Yale University (1920) Towle worked as an engineer for a number of aircraft companies, including Dayton-Wright (1921-22), Martin (1922-23), Aeromarine (1923-24), and Stout Metal Airplane Co (1924-25) before joining Ford Motor Company's Airplane Division (1925-27). While at Ford, Towle designed a three-motored aircraft to replace the Stout 'Air Pullman:, the rights to which Ford purchased with Stout in 1925. Towle left Ford in 1927 to form his own company, Towle Marine Aircraft (1927) and Towle Aircraft Company (1928-32). In 1933 Towle joined Monocoupe and later moved to Lambert Aircraft (1933-35) before leaving the aircraft industry.

This collection consists of three scrapbooks contain a detailed log of Robert Bricker Swope's South American travels. Objects include photographs, some from the air (some of the 1946 photos are in color), plane tickets, plane schedules, plane routes, airline brochures, correspondence from airlines (Pan American, Eastern, Panagra, SCADTA), hotel reservations and correspondence, travel brochures, maps, business cards, passport, itineraries, postcards, and telegrams.
Scope and Contents:
The three scrapbooks contain a detailed log of Mr. Swope's South American travels. Objects include: many photos, some from the air (some of the 1946 photos are in color); plane tickets; plane schedules; plane routes; airline brochures; correspondence from airlines ( Pan American, Eastern, Panagra, Scadta); hotel reservations and correspondence; travel brochures; maps; business cards; passport; itineraries; postcards; and telegrams.

Biographical / Historical:
Robert Bricker Swope was born in 1888 and worked as an executive in Washington D.C. Mr. Swope took two trips by plane to South America, and was accompanied by his wife Lydia L. Swope on the second trip.

Nathaniel "Buddy" Wilson, Jr. (1936-2010) wrote to various airlines as a child asking them to send him examples of baggage labels. He was very successful and collected many from regional, national, and international airlines. Biographical / Historical:
Nathaniel "Buddy" Wilson, Jr. (1936-2010) wrote to various airlines as a child asking them to send him examples of baggage labels. He was very successful and collected many from regional, national, and international airlines. Wilson had a lifelong love of aviation and made it his career. Wilson obtained a bachelor of science degree in Air Transportation from Purdue University in 1958 and then joined the US Navy where he served at Naval Air Station Rota in Spain. Wilson then went to work as a Foreign Service officer in El Salvador for the US Department of State. During his time with the State Department, Wilson helped to negotiate foreign air routes. Wilson then went to work for the Air Transport Association, where he remained for 25 years before retiring in 1995 as Vice President of International Affairs.

This donation consists of memorabilia, mostly from 1943, from the following American and Canadian airlines: American Airlines; Canadian Pacific Airlines; Northwest Airlines; Pennsylvania Central Airlines; Trans-Canada Air Lines (TCA); TWA; United Air Lines; and Western Air Lines. The following types of memorabilia are included: souvenir route maps, souvenir flight packets, menus, baggage labels and decals, seat occupied signs, postcards, tickets, timetable schedules, comment cards, and brochures.

Biographical / Historical:
Although casual air travel virtually ceased during the conflict, World War II brought new life to the airline industry as many airlines in the Allied countries, including the United States and Canada, were flush from lease contracts to the military. Airlines immediately began working closely with the military, coordinating the transport of aircraft, cargo, and personnel around the world. A tight priority list ensured that only those serving the war effort flew.

This collection consists of Elton Silliman's personal and business papers. The material consists of correspondence, photographs, and documents pertaining to airline operations during the period 1930-1960, as well as airport and hotel financial records. The material also includes club and society reports and membership lists.

[For brevity's sake, Pan American Airways, Inc. and Compania Mexicana de Aviacion, S.A. will be referred to in this finding aid as PAA and CMA respectively.]

This collection consists mainly of Elton Ross Silliman's business papers. These papers relate to his career with PAA and its subsidiary, CMA. Both companies had Silliman operating out of Mexico, Central America, northern South America, and the Caribbean and interacting with many Latin Americans prominent in the fields of aviation, government, and industry. Consequently, much of the correspondence, handbooks, and newspaper clippings are in the Spanish language. No attempt was made during processing to translate these materials. Included in these papers are PAA and CMA expense and financial reports, photographs and miscellaneous materials. This collection also includes a small amount of materials (personal correspondence) pertaining to Silliman's personal life – in particular, his interest in hunting rifles and the death of his father in 1950.
Arrangement:
Silliman's papers are arranged both chronologically and alphabetically. Correspondence, financial reports, photographs, newspaper clippings, and miscellaneous materials are organized by the former method. Handbooks and directories are grouped alphabetically by title.

Biographical/Historical note:
Elton Ross Silliman was an airline executive and manager in Latin America for Aerovias Centrales, S.A., Pan American Airways (PAA), Inc. and PAA subsidiary, Compania Mexicana de Aviacion, S.A. (CMA). As an American citizen living and working in this field throughout Central America and Mexico for several decades, he helped develop and expand U.S. commercial air service south of the Rio Grande. During 1931-32, he organized Aerovias Centrales, S.A. in Mexico. He joined PAA in 1933 as the company's special representative in Central America, Panama, Venezuela, and the Dutch West Indies. In 1943, Silliman became general manager for CMA. He retired from this position in the 1960s.

Biographical / Historical:
Seaboard & Western Airlines was founded by Arthur and Raymond Norden. These brothers were both World War II veterans of the Army's Air Transport Command. Over a 33 year period the airline these men helped create established itself as the preeminent carrier of cargo on the world's richest trade routes. This airline was the first to fly an all-cargo flight across the Atlantic, the first to land and takeoff at Idlewild (now John F. Kennedy) Airport, the first to fly support for the Berlin Airlift, the first to fly a Military Air Transport Service (MATS) charter, the first to support Pacific Airlift for the Korean Conflict (with a planeload of Air Force fighter pilots), the first to order and operate the Lockheed 1049D Super Constellation, the first to order and operate the Douglas DC-8-55, the first to order and operate the DC-8-63 CF, the first to order and operate the Boeing 747F (first 747 built as a freighter from the beginning of its production), the first all-cargo airline to join the International Air Transport Association (IATA), and the first airline in the world to equip its entire fleet with Inertial Navigation Systems. On April 4th, 1961 the company's name changed to Seaboard World Airlines after Richard M. Jackson was brought in as the new Chairman and President. On October 1, 1980 Seaboard World Airlines was absorbed by The Flying Tiger Line, Inc., and on December 16, 1988 The Flying Tiger Line, Inc., was absorbed by the Federal Express Corporation.

This collection consisted of miscellaneous material, including annual reports, for companies that were later acquired by Republic Airlines.
Scope and Contents:
The collection consisted of miscellaneous material, including annual reports for all companies that eventually came under Republic Airlines: route maps, photographs of various aircraft used, and publicity stickers, stamps, and notices. Press releases and newsletters are held for some of the companies. Much of the collection of press releases, progress reports, and information packets centers on the Boeing 727 series, the Boeing 747SP series, and the McDonnell Douglas DC-9 series. This collection also includes Bonanza Air Lines negatives.

Biographical / Historical:
This collection consist of various materials belonging to a group of airlines that eventually came under Republic Airlines. Summary:
Major Lester D. Seymour (1892-1976) was involved in both the military and commercial sides of aviation. After service in World War I, Seymour served as Chief Engineer of National Air Transport, and later become NAT's Vice President and General Manager. From 1933-1934 Seymour was appointed President of American Airlines. The collection includes airline newsletters, annual reports, photographs, and manuals.
Scope and Contents:
This collection consists of the following: copies of the National Air Transport Inc. (NAT) newsletter, "NAT Flypaper", 1928 - 1933; "Survey of Projected Airmail Routes" 1926; annual reports for both NAT and American Airways (later American Airlines); NAT photographs; NAT Regulations; "A Study of Transportation by Airway as related to Competition with Rail Carriers in Continental United States", 1932; NAT Bulletin Board; and the American Airlines Procedures Manual for 1934. In June of 1999, six films were found in the Film Archives that were part of this donation. The films, evidently taken by Seymour during his airline travels, have the following titles: West (Part 1 and 2); Phoenix to Los Angles; Flying Across America with United Airlines in 28 Hours; Memphis to Phoenix; and American Airways: Chicago - New York.

Biographical / Historical:
Major Lester D. Seymour (1892-1976) was involved in both the military and commercial sides of aviation. Seymour rose to the rank of 2nd Lieutenant, Aero Engineer-Officer, 85th Aero Squadron during World War I. After the war, he became involved in the Civilian Aero Engineer US Air Service and in the Air Corps Reserve. In 1926, Seymour became involved with the commercial airlines industry. He started as the Chief Engineer at National Air Transport, and later become NAT's Vice President and General Manager. He was also briefly the Vice President of United Air Lines after their 1933 takeover of NAT. From 1933-1934 Seymour was appointed President of American Airlines.

World War II brought new life to the airline industry as many airlines in the Allied countries were flush from lease contracts to the military. Foreseeing a future demand for civil air transport, airlines invested in air travel and when wartime travel restrictions ended, passenger travel around the world surged to new levels. New carriers emerged, and new technology began to revolutionize civil aviation after the war. Flying become more popular and commonplace due to the new level of speed, comfort and efficiency airlines brought to the traveling public. The jet engine revolutionized air travel, by allowing aircraft manufacturers to build bigger, faster, and more productive airliners, thus enabling them to reduce their operating costs and airfares.

The films in this collection are as follows "Wings to the Land of the Maya" (1965); "Birth of a Jet"; "The Pan Am Story;" "Panamac - What it is...What it Does;" "50,000;" and end titles to a longer film. The video tapes in this collection are "C. E. Acker on Sale of Pacific Division" (4/25/1986, U-Matic); "Pan American/National Merger" (internal version, U-Matic). The audio tape is a recording of the "Old Timers Program" for October 10, 1963.

Pan American Airways (Pan Am) was active in the airline industry from 1927, when it established a regular scheduled international service, to its bankruptcy in late 1991. Pan Am was the first American airline to operate a permanent international air service. From its first route between Key West and Havana, Pan Am extended its routes into the rest of the Caribbean, Central America and South America. In 1936, Pan Am inaugurated passenger service in the Pacific, and began service in the Atlantic in 1939. Pan Am started around-the-world commercial air service in 1947. Besides establishing many "firsts" with routes, Pan Am also set "firsts" in aircraft technology, as when they became the first to use Boeing 747s in regular scheduled services.

Biographical / Historical:
National Air Transport (NAT), Boeing Air Transport (BAT), and Stout Air Services were three early airmail carriers. NAT was formed in 1925 by Clement Keys, and in 1927 won the bid for the New York to Chicago Airmail route. BAT received the Chicago to San Francisco route in 1927, and also carried passengers. Stout Air Service was formed in 1925 and carried mail and passengers from Detroit to Cleveland. These three companies were all predecessors of United Air Lines, which was formed in 1929.

Victor Vernon was an aviation pioneer, flight instructor, U. S. Navy aviator, and airline executive. This collection consists of three scrapbooks that chronicle Vernon's aviation career.
Scope and Contents:
This collection consists of three scrapbooks that chronicle Victor Vernon's aviation career and include numerous photographs, with an emphasis on Curtiss flying boats, the Curtiss Model H America, the Curtiss rebuilt Langley Aerodrome, and Curtiss tractor type aircraft. Besides the photographs, the scrapbooks contain many newspaper clippings covering Vernon's involvement with Curtiss, and his association with the Oregon-Washington-Idaho Airplane Company, as well as correspondence with William (Billy) Mitchel, Glenn Curtiss, and C.R. Smith. Miscellaneous items include route charts, correspondence, and photographs relating to Colonial Airlines and American Airlines, photographs of Bert Acosta and Vernon's naval aviator certificates. There is also material relating to Vernon's hydroaeroplane.

Biographical / Historical:
Victor Vernon was an aviation pioneer who began his career on Curtiss flying boats. In 1915 Vernon went to Toronto, Canada with the Curtiss School to teach Canadian pilots. During World War I, Vernon served with the U. S. Navy as an aviator and test pilot for the Naval Aircraft Factory. From 1919-1920, Vernon was instrumental in forming the Oregon-Washington-Idaho Airplane Company. In 1930 Vernon joined Colonial Airlines, a division of American Airways. He remained with American Airlines as Personnel Director and Assistant to the President until his retirement in 1948.

This accession consists of the following material relating to Virginia D. Martus and Dorothy K. de Silva's Air France Concorde flight on May 28, 1978: Air France flight certificates, along with letters explaining the certificates; two copies of the "Concorde Network" brochures, one from de Silva's is annotated with flight information; three postcards of the Air France Concorde; one 8.5 by 10 inch photograph of the Air France Concorde; a "Guide for the Supersonic Traveller" brochure, produced by Air France; and two menus. This collection also contains two Trans World Service (TWA) menus, presumedly from their trip back to the United States.

Biographical / Historical:
The first supersonic airliner to enter service, the Concorde flew thousands of passengers across the Atlantic at twice the speed of sound for over 25 years. Designed and built by Aérospatiale of France and the British Aviation Corporation (BAC), the graceful Concorde was a stunning technological achievement that could not overcome serious economic problems. In 1976, Air France and British Airways jointly inaugurated Concorde service to destinations around the globe. Carrying up to 100 passengers in great comfort, the Concorde catered to first class passengers for whom speed was critical. It could cross the Atlantic in fewer than four hour—half the time of a conventional jet airliner. However its high operating costs resulted in very high fares that limited the number of passengers who could afford to fly it. These problems and a shrinking market eventually forced the reduction of service until all Concordes were retired in 2003.

This collection consists mainly of material relating the 1960 New York Mid-Air Collision including FAA and CAB reports on the accident and material relating to the National Transportation Safety Board's formal hearing, including testimony by William A. Wesche, Jr. The testimony is on two reel-to reel tapes, with copies on three cassette tapes, a flash drive and CDR, as well as handwritten statement drafts by Wesche which he used to compose his official testimony, and a video of an air disaster television series highlighting this accident. The collection also contains the Army /Navy/CAA 39-page report, "Standards for the Control of Instrument Flight Rule Traffic" (ANC-IFC), January 1, 1946.

Biographical / Historical:
On 16 December 1960, the United Airlines Douglas DC-8 Mainliner Will Rogers (Flight 826), bound for Idlewild Airport (later John F. Kennedy International Airport) in New York City, collided with the TWA Lockheed L-1049 Super Constellation Star of Sicily (Flight 266) as it was descending into the city's LaGuardia Airport. One plane crashed on Staten Island, the other into Park Slope, Brooklyn, killing all 128 people on both aircraft and six people on the ground; at the time, it was the deadliest aviation disaster. The probable cause of the accident was found to be that the United flight proceeded beyond its clearance limit and the confines of the airspace allocated to the flight by Air Traffic Control. William A Wesche, Jr., was a Federal Aviation Agency Supervisory Air Traffic Control Specialist at Idlewild Airport Traffic Control Tower, and was the Watch Supervisor on duty during the accident.

This collection consists of a Trans World Airlines (TWA) (USA) Royal Ambassador Service dinner menu, in the form of a souvenir scroll, believed to be from a London to Chicago flight, circa 1966. The scroll measures approximately 14.5 by 12 inches unfurled and has a gold cord with tassels at the top. At the top left corner is the TWA logo and across the bottom right corner is the Royal Ambassador Service logo which consists of a red "sash" with a gold badge containing the letters "RA." The menu lists beverage selections; appetizers; entrees; side dishes; desserts; and à la carte items.

Trans World Airlines (TWA) introduced "Royal Ambassador Service" for first-class passengers on trans-Atlantic and other international flights in June 1961. The service was designed to provide personalized attention to passengers throughout the ticketing process and flight and featured an elaborate 2.5 hour dinner service with seven entree choices and served on fine china, silver, and crystal from an aisle cart. Throughout the years, Royal Ambassador Service was expanded to cover more flight segments.

Biographical/Historical note:
Morten S. Beyer (1921-2010) was one of the first aviation consultants and the author of articles and newsletters analyzing the economic trends of aviation. After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts from Swarthmore College in 1943, Beyer started his aviation career at Pan American Airways (PAA), where he established and directed the first centralized scheduling and operations control office. He left PAA in 1948 to work for Capital Airlines, Inc., where he was the assistant to the Senior Vice President of Operations and Maintenance. In 1960, Beyer went to work at Riddle Airlines, Inc., as Senior Vice President, Operations and Sales, of Riddle's overall activities. From 1964 to 1967, Beyer was employed by Trans World Airlines, Inc. (TWA), where he was appointed the System General Manager and Deputy Director General for Saudi Arabian Airlines, responsible for the performance of TWA's contract with Saudi Arabian Airlines. From 1967-1971, Beyer was the President of Modern Air Transport, a charter airline, and in 1971 he become the President of Capitol Airlines where he remained until 1972 when he bought the stock of bankrupt Universal Airlines. He attempted to refinance the airline into a new company, Phoenix Airlines, but due to the nation's fuel crisis sparked by the Arab oil embargo, he failed to accomplish this and accepted the presidency of Johnson International Airlines in 1973.

In 1974, Beyer established AVMARK, an aviation international consulting company. As a regular feature he established one of the first aviation newsletters. He also published a book of Transport Aircraft Values (TAV), which forecasted aircraft values twenty years in to the future, using a formula that accounted for inflation, fuel price fluctuations and labor cost variables. This formula became a standard for aircraft appraisals and made Beyer a trusted appraiser and marketing expert. Beyer testified before Congress twice and was a guest-expert on many television news programs. In 1993, Beyer sold AVMARK and founded Morten Beyer and Associates, later Morten Beyer and Agnew, which continued aviation consulting in France and Japan. Beyer retired in 2003.

This scrapbook contains the following types of material documenting the introduction of American Airlines' Boston to London commercial service in October 1945: newspaper articles; photographs of crew, passengers, and christening speakers; flight memorabilia; and three 78 rpm record son the christening of the aircraft New England on 21 October 1945.

Biographical / Historical:
American Airlines was developed from a conglomeration of 82 small airlines through acquisitions and reorganizations; initially called American Airways, it was a common brand for a number of independent carriers. These included Southern Air Transport in Texas, Southern Air Fast Express (SAFE) in the western US, Universal Aviation in the Midwest (which operated a transcontinental air/rail route in 1929), Thompson Aeronautical Services (which operated a Detroit-Cleveland route beginning in 1929) and Colonial Air Transport in the Northeast. On January 25, 1930, American Airways was incorporated as a single company, based in New York, with routes from Boston, New York and Chicago to Dallas, and from Dallas to Los Angeles. In 1934, American Airways Company was acquired by E. L. Cord, who renamed it "American Air Lines." Cord hired Texas businessman C. R. (Cyrus Rowlett) Smith to run the company. American was one of the four airlines, along with United Eastern, and TWA, that dominated the major transcontinental routes. Today American Airlines, Inc. is the world's third-largest airline in passenger miles transported, passenger fleet size, and operating revenues.
