This accession consists of the papers of David H. DeVorkin, Curator in the Space History Division at the National Air and Space Museum, 1981- , with earlier records
dating from when he was assistant professor of astronomy at Central Connecticut State College, as well as during the years he attended high school and college. DeVorkin specializes
in the origins and development of modern astrophysics and the space sciences, and is involved in professional societies that include the American Astronomical Society, the
History of Science Society, and the Astronomical Society of the Pacific. The papers primarily document DeVorkin's scientific articles, lectures, planetarium programs, research,
professional society activities, and preparation of his own books such as "Science with a Vengeance: How the Military Created the US Space Sciences after World War II" and

This accession consists of records created and maintained by Donald S. Lopez, Deputy Director, documenting the administration of the National Air and Space Museum (NASM)
and outreach performed by Lopez on behalf of NASM. Lopez held various positions at the National Air and Space Museum beginning in 1972 and became Deputy Director in 1983.
Lopez retired in 1990, but came back to the position of Deputy Director in 1996, a position which he held until his death in 2008. In between stints as Deputy Director, Lopez
continued to be closely involved in the activities of the Office of the Director. Topics documented in this collection include facilities, special events, strategic planning,
exhibitions (including various iterations of proposed Enola Gay exhibitions), budget, collection management, policies, visitors, public relations, and lectures and presentations
given by Lopez. Some records document Lopez's participation on outside boards and committees. Some records were maintained by Lopez, but pre-date his NASM career. Materials

This accession consists primarily of images as well as some video documenting the construction of the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center and events surrounding its opening.
The majority of the photographs were taken by Carolyn Russo, National Air and Space Museum (NASM) photographer; Mark A. Avino and Eric F. Long, Smithsonian Institution, Office
of Imaging and Photographic Services (OIPS) photographers assigned to NASM; Jeff Tinsley and Dane Penland, OIPS photographers; and William Doole, National Air and Space Society
volunteer. Additional images were taken or compiled by Linda Neuman Ezell, Project Coordinator. Materials include slide transparencies, prints, negatives, contact sheets,
and digital images. A small number of images document models, concept drawings, architectural drawings, floor plans, and the placement of artifacts in the facility or were

This accession consists of a building proposal for the National Air Museum (NAM) done by the Public Buildings Administration in 1949. This particular proposal was not
used. The proposal consists of narrative descriptions, site requirements, an organization chart, floor plans, site plans, elevations, sections, and photographs of a model
of the building. Three of the images from the proposal have been scanned and are included in this accession as both electronic files on CD and photographic prints.
