'A Photographic Record of 'Short' Aircraft Designed & Constructed by Short Brothers (Rochester & Bedford) Ltd. in the Period 1908-1944.' Album contains 69 photographs by V. E. Galloway with historical descriptive text by L. Stedman. The introduction which starts the album gives a brief overview of the history of the British aircraft manufacturing company of Short Brothers from its inception through 1944. Its author describes the contents of the album as follows: 'The pages that follow contain a pictorial record of aircraft types produced since 1908... an ancestral line of which the firm of Short Brothers may feel justly proud.'
Biographical / Historical:
In November 1908, Hugh Oswald, Albert Eustace, and Horace Leonard Short established Short Brothers Ltd to build Wright aircraft under license in England. In 1919 the name was revised to Short Brothers (Rochester & Bedford) Ltd. In 1936 Short Brothers convinced the British Air Ministry to establish a new factory in Belfast and established Short & Harland Ltd, jointly owned by Short Brothers and Harland & Wolff, to manage the plant. In November 1947 Short Brothers and Short & Harland merged to form Short Brothers & Harland Ltd of Belfast. In June 1977 the company readopted the name Short Brothers Ltd. By the 1980s, 100% of the company stock was held by the British Government and, in 1984, the company was renamed Short Brothers PLC. In October 1989 the company was purchased by Bombardier Inc of Canada to become the European Group of Bombardier Aerospace, although the company still operates under the Short Brothers name.

Date:
1927-1928
Scope and Contents:
No aviation topics are illustrated in this collection. The photographs do give excellent views of construction techniques (such as reinforced concrete construction) and equipment in use in the 1927-1928 period, including numerous steam shovels and a very large stationary crane. The backgrounds of the photographs give very good views of the railroad lines running along one side of the site (many showing steam engines pulling trains) and of the Paterson neighborhoods surrounding the site. All photographs are exterior views, with the sole exception of photo no. 1095-16, which is an interior view.
Biographical / Historical:
This small album contains a series of 86 photographs depicting the construction by the John W. Ferguson Company of factory buildings at a site in Paterson, New Jersey, for the Wright Aeronautical Company. Photographs were taken by an unknown photographer during the period of December 4, 1927 through November 17, 1928, and are of excellent quality. The photographs are grouped sequentially and chronologically into four different 'contract' series; each series would appear to record the construction of a different building or subgroup of buildings on the site.

Summary:
The Albert and Willy Stupe World War I Photograph Album (acc. 1991.0037) shows German soldiers in both formal and informal settings; living quarters and airfields; airplanes and the bombs they dropped; and the towns in which the military installments were situated. A variety of aircraft and high profile personalities also appear in this album.
Scope and Contents:
The Albert and Willy Stupe World War I Photograph Album contains photographs of soldiers of the 95th and 135th Infantry Regiments. The photographs record soldier life in both formal and informal settings, showing their living quarters and airfields; the airplanes they flew and the bombs they dropped; as well as the towns in which the airfields were situated. Several pages are dedicated to Kampfgeschwader 3, the England-Geschwader. It was this bomber squadron, under the command of Captain Ernst Brandenburg, that was responsible for the bombing of London by airplanes, an achievement which earned both Captain Brandenburg and his successor, Captain Rudolf Kleine, the Pour le Mérite.

A variety of aircraft also appear in this album, including: Gotha G.IV, Fokker E.II, LFG Roland, and LVG C.III. A number of images document the visits of high-profile German personalities to the units--Kaiser Wilhelm, General von Hindenberg, and Germany's most famous ace, Baron von Richthofen--while several photographs memorialize the funeral of flying ace Oswald Boelcke.
Arrangement:
The Albert and Willy Stupe World War I Photograph Album is in its original order. A group of ten postcards in folder two (acc. 1991.0054) are in no particular order.
Biographical/Historical note:
Willy Stupe (1889-1951) and his younger brother Albert (1891-1917) were born in Coburg, Germany, where they also began their military service. The brothers both served in the 95th Infantry Regiment (6th Thuringian) at some point during their military careers. Leutnant Albert Stupe was a decorated officer, having received two Iron Crosses and other combat medals. World War I German casualty lists for 1914-1919 show that Albert, who is said to have been a pilot, was killed in action on July 31, 1917.

Willy spent some of his military service as a paymaster and is said to have served in a motorcycle unit. He immigrated to the United States in 1921, declaring (as Willy Stuppe) his intentions be become an American citizen. Willy lived out the rest of his days with his wife, Cora Caesar, working as a merchant in the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, area until his death in 1951.

This collection consists of 355 biographies written by Harold E. Morehouse and intended for publication. These biographies discuss Morehouse's fellow early aviation pioneers, many of whom belong to the Early Birds, an organization open to those who soloed before December 17, 1916. Each biography discusses the subject's life and the majority of biographies include a photograph of the individual.
Contents note:
The Harold E. Morehouse Flying Pioneers Biographies Collection (accession XXXX-0450) contains approximately four cubic feet of material. It is also known as The Harold and Marvel Morehouse Aviation Pioneers Collection. The collection includes photographs, negatives, and typewritten material.
Arrangement note:
Container List: Series I: Biographies of Flying Pioneers; Series II: Miscellaneous related materials; Series III: Oversized materials
Biographical note:
This collection consists of over 350 short biographies of early aviation's trailblazers written by Harold E. Morehouse (1894-1973). Conspicuous by its absence is a biography of the author, himself an innovator.

Born in Michigan, Morehouse channelled a youthful fascination with flight into training in the field of mechanical engineering. He began work in 1915 for the Van Blerck Motor Company and assisted in their development of aircraft engines. In 1917, Morehouse was working as a layout draftsman on the Standard J-1 Training Airplane for the Dayton-Wright Aeroplane Company. However, this assignment was quickly superseded by his placement on a secret project, supervised by C.F. Kettering and Orville Wright. Its aim was the production of a selfflying aerial torpedo which has since become known as the Kettering Bug. Morehouse contributed to all phases of this project, including its design, engine development and flight testing. The armistice arrived before the actual deployment of the Bug; Morehouse was to spend the next few years in engine design and development.

In 1925, Morehouse joined the Wright Aeronautical Corporation and both the Wright-Morehouse engine and the Wright-Whirlwind J-5 (a re-design of the J-4) were developed here under Morehouse. The latter engine was later to serve as the powerplant for the historic 1927 trans-Atlantic flight of the Spirit of St. Louis and this was a great source of satisfaction to Morehouse. He left Wright Aero in 1929 and in subsequent years designed the inverted Rover for the Michigan Aero Engine Company, the A-50 for the Continental Motors Corporation and the Engineering and Research Corporation's Erco engine.

About ten years prior to his retirement in 1965, Harold Morehouse began work on a personal project. His aim was to gather information on significant contributors to early aviation and distill this data to produce a set of brief biographies of these innovative men and women. He was assisted in this by his wife, Marvel Dyer. After Harold's death, Marvel worked in concert with Paul E. Garber of the National Air Museum to procure publication of the work. Sadly, the passing of Marvel Dyer and later of Paul Garber seemed to bring plans for publication to a halt.

This collection consists of hundreds of biographical narratives concerning the lives of the "Flying Pioneers." Many of those featured were members of the Early Birds of Aviation, Inc., a group whose members had the distinction of having soloed prior to 1916. Most of the biographies are accompanied by one or more photographs of their subject and comprise an invaluable resource on the accomplishments and sacrifices of those intrepid individuals who forged the history of American aviation. However, it should be borne in mind that the biographies are based in large measure on personal interviews and are concerned primarily with their subjects' careers in aviation.

Other sources should be consulted to obtain a complete portrait.

Biographies of Flying Pioneers 1.1

Collection Creator:
Morehouse, Harold E., 1894-1973  Search this
Type:
Archival materials
Series note:
Each folder contains information on a significant figure in the annals of American aviation. Materials for each individual usually include several versions of a short biography, one or more photographs and may include negatives of those images. Some photographs that would be expected to be found within this series may be found, by reason of their size, in Series III.

For reasons that are unclear, several distinguished personalities of the age of early flight have been omitted for biography by Morehouse, including Glenn Curtiss and the Wright Brothers.

In December 2017, the Museum's Aeronautics Department transferred an additional set of biographies to the NASM Archives. This set follows this series as Series 1.2.
