Summary:
Fred Noonan (1893-1937) was a Merchant Marine officer and navigator who disappeared on July 2, 1937 with Amelia Earhart during their failed around-the-world flight attempt. This collection consists of a telegram, dated April 8, 1937, sent by Fred Noonan to a friend, Matt Neehan; a photograph of Noonan and his first wife, Josephine; and three news clippings dating from 1966-1970 regarding the disappearance of Amelia Earhart and Noonan.
Scope and Contents:
This collection consists of a telegram, dated April 8, 1937, sent by Fred Noonan to a friend, Matt Neehan. In it, Noonan thanks Neehan for a letter he sent and plans a visit after his around-the-world flight with Amelia Earhart. Someone (presumably Neehan) has written a note on the front that reads, "Fred Noonan, [Amelia] Earhart Pilot - They didn't make it. M." On the back are notes in pencil and a draft telegram which reads, "Don't give up STOP I know Fred STOP least experience of two years [unreadable] has taught me to believe he will surmount any [unreadable] - I'll bet on Fred. Matt." Also included in the collection is a small sepia toned photograph of Noonan and his first wife, Josephine, taken in 1928. Finally, the collection contains three news clippings dating from 1966-1970 regarding the disappearance of Earhart and Noonan.

Note: Two of the news clippings in this collection have been excluded from online display due to possible copyright restrictions.
Arrangement:
Collection is in chronological order.
Biographical / Historical:
Fred Noonan (1893-1937) was a Merchant Marine officer and navigator who disappeared on July 2, 1937 with Amelia Earhart during their failed around-the-world flight attempt. Noonan served with the Merchant Marine for more than twenty years, including service during World War I, before obtaining his pilot's license in 1930. Noonan then went to work for Pan American Airways (Pan Am) (USA) working first as a navigation instructor, then later as an airport manager and inspector. Noonan later flew as navigator on Pan Am Sikorsky S-42 Clipper flights in San Francisco, including endurance flights made by Edwin Charles "Ed" Musick. Noonan was subsequently tasked with mapping Pan Am's routes across the Pacific. Having met through mutual acquaintances, Amelia Earhart chose Noonan to serve as navigator on her attempted 1937 around-the-world flight in a twin-engine Lockheed Model 10-E Electra. She and Noonan were flying from Lae, New Guinea to Howland Island when they disappeared over the Pacific Ocean on July 2, 1937. A exhaustive sea and air search, ordered by President Franklin Roosevelt, was unsuccessful in locating Earhart and Noonan.

Biographical / Historical:
Jean Warren (J. W.) Seele (1924-1993) was born in Topeka, Kansas, and spent almost his entire life there. After his graduation from Topeka High School he was enrolled for about one and a half years at the Spartan School of Aeronautics, Tulsa, Oklahoma. Although he worked for a few years at Bendix Aviation Corp, Kansas City Division during the 1950s, most of his professional career was spent as an engineering technician for the Kansas Department of Transportation. While he was not directly employed in the aviation field, Seele's hobby was photographing aircraft. Over a twenty year period, Seele photographed aircraft and at various times he was the official photographer for the National Antique Airplane Association, and for the annual fly-in sponsored by the Experimental Aircraft Association at Rockford, Illinois. Seele's photographs often appeared in the publications of both organizations, and several of this photographs also appeared in Jane's All the World's Aircraft during the 1970s.

Scope and Contents note:
This material consists of information from a number of different businesses related to the manufacture, development and design of airplanes and other aircraft. There is also a substantial amount of material from airline companies and from companies involved in the manufacture and production of aeronautical parts and supplies. A number of these companies were involved in manufacturing engines and were automobile manufacturers. Other parts and supplies include aircraft measuring instruments, radiators, wings, tires, carburetors, and fabric. These companies tend to have catalogues of the aircraft that they manufacture including information on controls, wheel retraction, fuel system, cabin construction, etc. The aircraft is manufactured for commercial, military, sporting and personal use. A small amount of material concerning companies involved in aerial advertising, aerial photography and map making is included. There is also information on businesses that served as agents for people who performed acts relating to aviation particularly at amusement parks and fairs. There is very little information from clubs, associations and training schools.

The material consists primarily of scattered correspondence on letterhead stationery, printed advertisements, articles, catalogues, menus from airline companies, luggage tags, timetables, postcards, lithographs, photographs, company publications, bulletins, newspaper clippings, early advertisements, reports, periodicals, pamphlets, patents, and books. There is a substantial amount of images including photographs and lithographs of airplanes, airships and balloons. A file of visual references was made by staff consisting of images of aircraft used by companies to advertise their products. There is also information on Lindbergh and Byrd mainly articles, photographs or programs honoring them.

Publications relating to aviation include topics such as aeronautical occupations, linking rail and air transportation, problems with improving aircraft, airplanes in warfare, aircraft safety and a chronology of the development and utilization of aircraft.
Arrangement note:
Materials in box one and two are information from airline companies and are arranged by name of company. Box three, four and five consist of manufacturers and dealers of aeronautical parts and supplies and are also arranged by name of company. Box six contains general images mainly photographs and lithographs. Publications including periodicals, bulletins and newsletters devoted in the interest of the aviation field is in box seven. The publications are arranged in alphabetical order. Warshaw continued to accumulate similar material until his death, which was donated in 1971 by his widow, Augusta. For a period after acquisition, related materials from other sources (of mixed provenance) were added to the collection so there may be content produced or published after Warshaw's death in 1969. This practice has since ceased.
