Scrapbooks containing printed material, photographs and correspondence relating to Oliver Newberry Chaffee and Alfred Juergens.
REEL 991: Two scrapbooks compiled by Nichols on Alfred Juergens including correspondence between Nichols and Juergens concerning his work, and between Nichols and Francis Tikalsky, Juergens' biographer and friend, mentioning Frank Currier, Frank Duveneck, Winslow Homer, John Singer Sargent and James McNeill Whistler, and letters to Juergens from A. Chatain and J.H. Guest; biographical information; photographs of Juergens, his wife, his work, of Currier and his work and of Duveneck's portrait of Currier; sketches from Munich and Rothenberg (not all microfilmed); lists of works in exhibitions and collections; and clippings and obituaries.
REEL 2299: A scrapbook compiled by Nichols in 1975 on Oliver Newberry Chaffee containing mainly photocopies of: letters to Chaffee and Nichols; exhibition catalogs and clippings; biographical material; 3 photographs of paintings by Chaffee; and a list of paintings.

Provenance:
The two Juergens scrapbooks were lent for microfilming by Nichols in 1975. He later donated it with the Chaffee scrapbook in 1979. The Juergens scrapboook was assembled in preparation for an exhibition. [Some of the Juergens sketches were not microfilmed.]

Scope and Contents:
Correspondence with dealers, artists, museums, publishers, photography studios, and others regarding art purchases, loans, and Shaw's collection; and 16 v. of scrapbooks containing photographs, letters, and biographical information on artists. Much of the correspondence with artists relates to Shaw's requests for the information which was then used in the scrapbooks. Also included is one volume compiled in 1947 outlining the contents of the scrapbooks.
REELS 1124-1125: 16 vol. of scrapbooks, 1864-1930, relating to artists represented in Shaw's collection, containing letters, many from artists, photographs of artists and their work, biographical data, clippings and articles, and comments on their work; and 1 v., "Notes: Edwin C. Shaw Collection of Paintings," compiled in 1947, and annotated "Used at Women's Art League Meeting at Miss Shaw's in 1947 by Mrs. [Jane S.] Barnhardt, who compiled it, and then given to the Art Institute Library," containing an outline of the contents of the 16 v. of scrapbooks.

Art collector; Akron, Ohio. Shaw, a BF Goodrich executive and avid collector of post-Civil War American art, was one of the founders of the Akron Art Institute, now the Akron Art Museum.
Provenance:
Lent for microfilming 1976 and 1992 by the Akron Art Museum. Shaw bequethed his art collection and papers to the Museum, then named the Akron Art Institute.

A letter from Frank Duveneck, 1877; a sketch of Donaldson, ca. 1876, by [James] Carroll Beckwith, with a note from Beckwith, 1913; letters from Gari Melchers, some of which are illustrated; obituary clippings on Melchers; photographs, mostly of fellow art students in Munich, 1873-1877, including Francis Davis Millet and Frank Duveneck; and miscellany. Also included are several letters from Gari Melchers's wife Corrine to Donaldson's son, Bruce.
Biographical / Historical:
Architect (Detroit, Mich.). A friend of Gari Melchers. Donaldson's son Bruce (d. 1940) was chairman of the Art History Department at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor.

Scope and Contents:
One 11" x 15" black and white profile portrait of Frank Duveneck. The photograph is accompanied by a cancelled check (1918) signed by Duveneck and affixed to the bottom of the photograph.
Biographical / Historical:
Painter and teacher; Munich, Germany and Cincinnati, Ohio. Born in Covington, Kentucky, he used the surname Decker until 1886. He began his career painting in midwestern Catholic churches. In 1870, Duveneck went to Munich, where he shared a studio with William Merritt Chase, studied with Wilhelm von Diez, and was influenced by the style of the Munich School. After travel to Venice and America, Duveneck opened his own school in Munich and in the Upper Bavarian village of Polling in 1878. His students, known as the "Duveneck Boys", included Otto Bacher, Julius Rolshoven, John Twachtman, and Herman Wessel. He married one of his students, Elizabeth Boott, in 1886. Following his wife's death in 1888, Duveneck returned to the United States to teach at the Cincinnati Art Academy.
