Renée Gokey (Eastern Shawnee), Teacher Services Coordinator at the National Museum of the American Indian, moderates a panel addressing the importance of traditional foods and food sovereignty in Native communities. The panelists include Valerie Segrest (Muckelshoot), Susan Sekaquaptewa (Hopi), and Travis Zimmerman (Lake Superior Chippewa). Valerie Segrest, an enrolled member of the Muckleshoot Indian Tribe, serves as the Native American Agriculture Fund’s Regional Director for Native Food and Knowledge Systems. She has a Bachelor of Science in Human Nutrition and Health Sciences from Bastyr University and a Master of Arts in Environment and Community. Ms. Segrest has dedicated her work in the field of Native American Nutrition towards the efforts of the food sovereignty movement rooted in education, awareness and overcoming barriers to accessing traditional foods for tribal communities throughout North America. Ms. Segrest has co-authored several publications including the books “Feeding the People, Feeding the Spirit: Revitalizing Northwest Coastal Indian Food Culture” and “Feeding Seven Generations: A Salish Cookbook”. Valerie aims to inspire and enlighten others about the importance of a nutrient-dense diet through a culturally appropriate, common sense approach to eating. http://www.tedxrainier.com/speakers/valerie-segrest/ Susan Sekaquaptewa is Assistant Agent for the Federally Recognized Tribal Extension program with the Hopi Tribe. She organizes and administers educational workshops related to local growing, seed saving, food foraging, food preservation, ranching and youth leadership. She also offers facilitation services related to planning to local non-profits. She is a gardener, food preserver and seed saver. Susan is a Hopi tribal member from the village of Sitchomovi and is married with one son. Travis Zimmerman is from the Crane Clan of the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa. Travis is a veteran of the United States Army and Minnesota National Guard. He has a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from St. John’s University in Collegeville, MN. Travis is currently the Site Manager of the Mille Lacs Indian Museum, which is part of the Minnesota Historical Society (MNHS), where he has been employed for over 14 years. Travis has been involved with American Indian organizations in Minnesota and the region for the last 25 years; serving as a staff member and board member of dozens of organizations.
