Video Title:
Día de los Muertos 2019: Dance of the Old Men and Dance of the Jaguar 1
Description:
The Day of the Dead or Día de los Muertos is a festival celebrated by people in Mexico, parts of Central and South America, and many Latino communities across the United States as a way to honor family and friends who have passed away. The tradition originates from the Indigenous cultures of Mesoamerica, including the Mexica (Aztec) and Maya. In this segment, the local Mixtec culture organization, Grupo los Tecuanes, perform the traditional dances, Danza de los Viejitos—Dance of the Old Men and Danza de los Tecuanes—Dance of the Jaguar, for the museum's annual Day of the Dead/Día de los Muertos celebration. Olivia Cadaval of the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage introduces Grupo los Tecuanes. This is the first of two performances of these dances presented that day. This performance was webcast and recorded in the Rasmuson Theater of the National Museum of the American Indian on November 3, 2019.
