Video Title:
The Network Behind the Cosmic Web | Nature–Design Triennial
Description:
To develop hypotheses about the structure of the cosmic web, researchers gathered data from 24,000 galaxies and applied algorithms to the data set. Kim Albrecht built a simulation that explores 3 models of the cosmic web using fixed length (based on distance), varying length (based on size), and nearest neighbor. Researchers compared observable data with his simulation and concluded that the nearest-neighbor model offers the best correlations between physical characteristics in nearby galaxies. Albrecht’s research tool is available on the internet, allowing users to toggle between and explore the 3 models. On view in "Nature–Cooper Hewitt Design Triennial" through January 2020. This video is described. Scientific research by Bruno C. Coutinho, Sungryong Hong, Arjun Dey, Lars Hernquist, Albert-László Barabási, Paul Torrey, and Mark Vogelsberger; Text and voice by James Stan ll; Courtesy of Kim Albrecht Kim Albrecht (German, born 1987), Barabási Lab, Northeastern University (Boston, Massachusetts, USA, founded 1995), based on scienti c research by Bruno C.
