Led by the world-renowned Anwar Khan, today’s performers come from long lines of Manganiyar and Langa musicians. They are masters of qawwali, derived from the word qawl (to speak in Arabic), a form of Sufi singing inspired by poetry. To convey devotional intensity, the vocalists draw out phrases and repeat verses that are accompanied by the rhythms of handclapping and drumming.
