Video Title:
Boukman Eksperyans Performance [Live at Smithsonian Folklife Festival 2010]
Description:
On June 26th, 2010 the GRAMMY-nominated group Boukman Eksperyans performed at the 2010 Smithsonian Folklife Festival in honor of the Haitian people affected by the devastating earthquake in January 2010. Boukman Eksperyans appear on 'Rhythms of Rapture: Sacred Musics of Haitian Vodou,' the 2004 Smithsonian Folkways album released as part of the Smithsonian Folklife Festival program from that year. 'Rhythms of Rapture: Sacred Musics of Haitian Vodou' is available on CD. Purchase on Smithsonian Folkways: https://folkways.si.edu/rhythms-of-rapture-sacred-musics-of-haitian-vodou/caribbean-world/music/album/smithsonian Features recent innovations and traditional roots of this potent music. Cuts from live Vodou ceremonies are juxtaposed with performances by well-known Haitian artists, such as Boukman Experyans, RaRa Machine, Boukan Ginen and RAM. A cascade of sounds—Haitian Kreyol, the blowing of a conch shell, powerful drumming, electric guitar, synthesizers, sounds of clay pots, bells, and gourd rattles—build compelling rhythmic cross-currents. Enclosed notes examine the music’s political and spiritual base. Portions of the proceeds from the sale of this recording go to benefit Haitian grassroots community projects. 20 tracks. "The music has an indomitable spirit." — New York Times Boukman Eksperyans: http://www.boukmaneksperyans.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/BoukmanEksperyans Twitter: https://twitter.com/boukmaneks Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/boukmaneksperyans Smithsonian Folkways: https://folkways.si.edu Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/smithsonianfolkwaysrecordings Twitter: https://twitter.com/Folkways Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/smithsonianfolkways The content and comments posted here are subject to the Smithsonian Institution copyright and privacy policy (www.si.edu/copyright).
