2022 Smithsonian American Art Museum Fellows Lectures – May 4, 2022 (Day 1)
Description:
On Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, May 4, 5, and 6, 2022, the Smithsonian American Art Museum presented a series of virtual lectures by the museum’s 2021–2022 research fellows. This recording captures the first two sessions on the first day. The first session is devoted to figurative sculpture and features talks by two predoctoral fellows, Kelvin Parnell and Giuseppe Rizzo, and postdoctoral scholar Fábio D'Almeida. Their presentations consider how sculptures by Thomas Ball, Henry Kirke Brown, Ferdinand Pettrich, George Blackall Simonds, and John Quincy Adams Ward reflect nineteenth-century histories of Western expansion, the racialization of Black Americans, and global networks of interchange. The second session explores artists’ engagement with cultural identity through stereotype, resistance, affinity-building, and aesthetic speculation. Presentations by doctoral candidates Ali Printz and Rebecca Giordano and senior scholars Samantha Noël and Robb Hernández reveal the nineteenth-century origins of the Appalachian stereotype; the influence of cultural anthropology on modernist painter Hale Woodruff; the Third World aesthetic present in 1970s works by David Hammons; and the impact of sci-fi on late 20th-century Latinx muralists. Session I: 1:00–2:45 p.m. ET Moderator: Karen Lemmey, the Lucy S.
