Video Title:
We Saw It Happen: Roscoe Turner
Description:
Famed pilot Roscoe Turner interviewed for the documentary, "We Saw It Happen." Turner talks about speed and airplane racing, plus designing aircraft with Jimmie Wedell. He also talks about the Turner-Laird and Wedell-Williams racers and the research and development problems with these racing airplanes. Turner discusses the importance of speed to civilization. He asserts that between 1926 and 1939 it was the civil aeronautical interests in speed that kept speed research going in the United States. He describes the enormous increases in speed between 1934 and 1952. He recalls his initial efforts as an air racer using surplus World War I fighters. He learned to fly in the Curtiss JN-4D Jenny but during the war he flew foreign-made aircraft -- something he said he would rather not do again.
