Video Title:
Hawaiʻi Celebration 2017 - Hula Kahiko 2
Description:
The museumʻs annual Hawaiʻi Celebration this year explores the ahupuaʻa, the traditional environmental management of lands and waters, extending into the air and out into the ocean. The local cultural group, Hālau Nohona Hawaiʻi, celebrates the ahupuaʻa through Hula Kahiko, the ancient form of hula that existed prior to European contact. Kaimana Chee introduces each performance, explaining the significance of the hula. The audience is given the opportunity to try out some of the dance moves and gestures. This is the second of four performances given on the last day of the festival. The performance was webcast live and recorded in the Potomac Atrium of the National Museum of the American Indian on May 21, 2017.
