After studying at MIT, Kenneth Olsen (1926–2011) and a colleague, Harlan Anderson, started a computer company. Because in 1957 this was very risky, their Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) first made only computer components. Later it pioneered minicomputers, which were smaller and more affordable than competitive mainframes. DEC eventually became the second largest computer company in America.
