Description:
Curators Kathleen Ash-Milby (Navajo) and David Garneau (Métis), introduced by Kevin Gover (Pawnee), director of the National Museum of the American Indian, discuss the exhibition "Transformer: Native Art in Light and Sound," on view at the National Museum of the American Indian, George Gustav Heye Center, in New York City through January 6, 2019. "Transformer" presents nine installations by Native artists from the UNited States and Canada who use light, digital projection, and experimental media to reflect on their place in and between traditional and dominant cultures. The works are by Jordan Bennett (Mi'kmaq), Raven Chacon (Diné), Jon Corbett (Métis), Marcella Ernest (Ojibwe) and Keli Mashburn (Osage), Stephen Foster (Haida), Nicholas Galanin (Tlingit), Julie Nagam (Anishnawbe/Métis), Marianne Nicolson (Kwakwa̱ka̱’wakw), and Kevin McKenzie (Cree/Métis). This Curators Conversation was originally webcast live from the museum in New York on November 9, 2017. "Transformer: Native Art in Light and Sound" and related programming are made possible through the generous support of the members of the New York Board of Directors of the National Museum of the American Indian and Ameriprise Financial. #TransformerNMAI
