New York, New York Oysters are vital to New York Harbor’s ecosystem: They filter the water, provide food, and form reefs that act like “speed bumps” to protect the city from damaging storm surges. Over the past few centuries, humans have removed most of the oysters. The Billion Oyster Project—a partnership between scientists and hundreds of high school students—is bringing New York Harbor’s oysters back. This video is presented as formatted for the Age of Humans Gallery in the David H. Koch Hall of Fossils – Deep Time. Featuring Christine Brandon, Paleotempologist with Bridgewater State University, and the students of the Billion Oyster Project
