Video Title:
2022 Smithsonian American Art Museum Fellows Lectures – May 6, 2022 (Day 3)
Description:
On Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, May 4, 5, and 6, 2022, the Smithsonian American Art Museum presented a series of virtual lectures by the museum’s 2021–2022 research fellows. This recording captures the third and final day of talks featuring sessions five and six. The fifth session highlights interdisciplinary research on nineteenth-century visual culture by doctoral candidates Nora Lessersohn and Chloe Chapin. Lessersohn’s presentation explores the importance of authenticity and speculation in the public lecturing and photographic practice of Khachadur “Christopher” Oscanyan, a prominent Armenian-American active during the Civil War. In the second talk, Chapin brings together fashion and portraiture studies to consider how advancements in tailoring in the first half of the nineteenth century led to new ways of seeing men’s bodies. The sixth session includes talks by senior scholar Elizabeth Hutchinson and three predoctoral fellows, Alexis Monroe, Choghakate Kazarian, and Elliot Krasnopoler. The objects they consider range in medium and chronology but share landscape as their subject matter. These presentations reveal how careful attention to material, process, and style can bring new meanings to the fore of once familiar artworks. Session V: 1:00–2:00 p.m. ET Moderator: Eleanor Jones Harvey, Senior Curator Nora Lessersohn, Joe and Wanda Corn Predoctoral Fellow, University College London “The Oriental Lecturer: Instructive Entertainment in Nineteenth-Century America” Chloe Chapin, Joe and Wanda Corn Predoctoral Fellow (deferred from 2020–2021), Harvard University “Tailoring as Portraiture: The New Art of Measuring and the Science of Seeing” Session VI: 3:00–5:15 p.m. ET Moderator: Eleanor Jones Harvey, Senior Curator Alexis Monroe, Douglass Foundation Predoctoral Fellow, Institute of Fine Arts, New York University “Slaveholder Georgic” Elizabeth Hutchinson, senior fellow, Smithsonian Institution (deferred from 2020–2021), Barnard College, Columbia University "The Materialities of Eadweard Muybridge's 1875 Photographs of Guatemala” Choghakate Kazarian, Terra Foundation of American Art Predoctoral Fellow, The Courtauld Institute of Art "Improving with Age: Albert Pinkham Ryder’s Mellowing Paintings” Elliot Krasnopoler, George Gurney Predoctoral Fellow, Bryn Mawr College "Sally Mann and the Soils of the South"
